He is a good finisher true enough, but what confidence can we have that he can fulfill that pressing ability after his recovery?

I hope I'm wrong if it comes to be, but I simply cannot fathom a reason from the surface why we'd get Rodriguez with a recently snipped ACL over a healthy player with the pace to press and versatility of style in Konoplyanka. Utterly mind-boggling to me.

I agree its a risk but he'll be even cheaper (and less complicated) than Kono and also home grown importantly.

As for him getting goals in behind it is worth noting that Soton had the highest average possession in the league last year, so teams weren't exactly camped in the Soton half.

It's true Poch's teams feature constant rotation up top, but again Lamela is the kind of player who can take on a compact back line and create. Rodriguez has never struck me as the kind of player to do that, but rather the type to be on the receiving end of such creativity. I'd even draw more of a similar comparison to Townsend or Lennon if we're referring to anyone on our current roster.

He could quite easily be Lennons or Townsends replacement in the squad. My issue is more to do with fact he's injured other than that think he's a useful addition as can cover multiple positions.

Just realised he was a PA journo- Press Association always reliable IIRC and many Spurs fans and the suicidal Saints fans taking this very seriously. I will offer a note of caution as he said we are close but then seemed to say that we are just in talks...

Backing up already, sounded far too much of a quick development for Spurs!

Yeah but he's not just pace. Anyway, a front three of Rodriguez, Soldado and Lamela could seriously enhance our goal threat, I wonder if Rodriguez learnt any Spanish off his family

No, but it's still a heavy component of his game. And sure such a lineup may enhance our goal threat over any current option at LW, but why in this upcoming season would we believe an ACL-torn player returning in October would supply more than a healthy Konoplyanka or Depay?

I would argue, considering the compactness of the defenses we face, that actually Kono would score more goals even than a healthy J Rod. I really don't think J Rod will thrive in a team as a winger in a team that faces the defensive tactics we do.

I would be really surprised (but very pleased) if we signed Rodriguez. He's out til October and would surely be expensive.

Yeah, Tadic is great. I'm really intrigued by Pelle just because of how well he played for Koeman at Feyenoord. He's a bit on the older side, but could get plenty of opportunities to score goals. (I'm going for him in fantasy as a decent stash).

I feel for them tbh. I really hope they bring in a couple of defenders. Attack wise I think they'll be ok. Ward Prowse will now get chance to progress. Their subs are non existent though, crazy situation.

Fair enough, then on that I believe we wholeheartedly agree. Simply don't get the potentially lost points from goals surrendered by foregoing a healthy, and better IMO, option as opposed to a knackered J Rod. Just unbelievable decision if it comes to be, and almost rivals the same head-spinning decision to sandbag at right winger last summer instead of adequately reinforcing at left winger.

Seriously, just thinking about it, if we want to sell Rose, Southampton would be an obvious choice to get some decent money. Does anyone know who their LB option is at this point?
I remember reading that they have an academy LB they think is as good as Shaw, can't remember the name though...

I'd be astonished if they sold us both players any time soon.

Seems to be no suggestion that a deal has been done in the ITV story...just a vague idea that we've 'stepped up our interest'.

Would be great to see it happen though.

The mug from Talksport who pissed us all off last week re Spurs being a 'sideways step' for MS is also backing up now so some news has obviously circulated. Also said Poch adores J-Rod so not surprised there...

I'm aware of these facts, but nonetheless when teams attacked Saints they did with more numbers and more space than teams below us would do against us.

We were tied for the least amount of through-balls per game in the league last season, do we really believe we're going to somehow magically transform into an entirely different unit under Poch and then to such an extent to somehow be consistently pinging J Rod on the trot in behind against compact defenses? Would much, much rather have any creator to play the position than another primarily receiving-type winger. We already have that in Chadli anyway.

Maybe I'm just used to disappointment but I feel like something will go wrong here. It'd be the most Spursy thing imaginable if we fucked up signing a player who might actually PREFER US OVER ARSENAL.

Got the same bad feeling, always do tbh :(
