Wouldn't mind seeing Paul Clement in the role. He's been assistant to Ancelotti at Real, PSG and now Bayern, and seemed to be doing pretty well at Derby before they sacked him (that seems to have worked out well for them!).

I think it's being set up now for Wenger. As others have said, it gives him and the arse a way out of their comfy relationship which is no longer taking them where they should be. Southgate has been given the role for the next few games, and there aren't really many more planned for next year until the season is over, if I'm correct. Wenger gets to stay exactly where he is living wise. No upheaval. He has the opportunity to make England play the football he loves, and that we all want - as fans - to see them play. There's some good youngsters coming through, and he likes a youngster. The FA get one of the top managers possible. It just seems the most rational move for all.

Yes, it seems rational to plenty of people on this site (including me) and probably a lot of fans elsewhere, but who thinks of the FA being rational?

Got this txt last night

Personally I am not sure Bruce is the image the FA want and also if Southgate does well in his 4 games in charge then the calls for him to be given the job full time will be deafening

"What price is Steve Bruce to b next England manager? Taxi John picked up today in London all suited and booted goin to a meeting in the Grosvenor Hotel"

The football was terrible, I rather not and he was the guy who started this downturn in form, I think most derby fans rather have McClaren back

You could probably count Steve Bruce out. He's gone to Villa.

It's all shaping up, now! #SherwoodForEngland:sneaky:

The manager is irrelevant until we produce some decent players
Tell that to Iceland.......or Wales. Of course the manager is relevant. Its the culture in this country to pick players at 'big' clubs and then pick/play them relentlessly regardless of form, suitability to system or opposition. Until we get a manager that changes that and builds a team with a style of play that suits them, instead of playing a collection of individuals we're going to struggle.

We've plenty of decent players.

Wenger would be the best possible choice but I dont think it will happen - England need an experienced and successful manager who has managed in the Premiership - that could be the likes of Hiddink, Benitez, Wenger, etc. - somebody of that ilk. They should forget about appointing an English manager until there is a candidate of the required standard, which there isn't.

Wales and Iceland feel like a team. Those players fight for each other and together. From the outside, non bias eye, England is a bunch of individuals going through the motions with no urgency and lack the will and the fight needed. That's a problem with the players and coaching.

We do have decent players though. Maybe not as good as France, Germany or Belgium at the moment, but the problem is we often try to squeeze all the best ones into the side, rather than trying to find players that compliment each other in partnerships all over the pitch. The blend and balance of the England side is rarely right.

As expected most fans are very happy with his appointment

It's the manager that makes the individuals into a team. Walker, Rose, Dier, Alli and Kane often play for England together, that's 1/2 the outfield players, and they work fine as a team for Spurs.

One of England's many problems is that the manager does play with a balanced team and the manager usually just picks the "names" regardless of whether they compliment each other or not.

Do people still really give a toss about Int football? No matter who is the manager I won't be watching any games. The only time worth watching is at a WC or EC otherwise I would rather watch paint dry.....
