No one has yet said why Vertonghen should be, I don't care if he was captain at Ajax it was probably due to him being the senior player. He has done absolutely no organising or marshalling of the defence so far from what I see, disagree all you want guys but its true. That's why him and Caulker can't play together yet and one of Gallas/Dawson has to play next to them. When we do get them paired we get the clusterfuck of a defensive line that we saw at Leeds. He should start small and learn how to organise the back four before stepping up to lead the team.

He sure showed him how to lead against Inter.

Dawson to remain as club captain, he is a link with Spurs, the Spurs fans.

Playing captain is a little different. Bale is a non-starter, you can't appoint a captain who may want to leave.

Lloris is French captain yes but it doesn't feel right and I'm not a lover pf goalkeeper captains, how can they affect outfield play and gee up the troops, they can hardly trot to the other end of the field to listen when the ref wants a word with one of our players, you always see John Terry with the ref for instance.

Kaboul has not yet played a high line defence and has therefore yet to prove himself in it. I have no doubt he can play it, but some don't have enough positional sense to do so, John Terry couldn't play it. I don't see him as a leader of men, as a captain.

Gallas won't be here.

Into the midfield and Sandro stands out for us there, again no sure he is a natural captain though, Parker is, but he won't be playing much so is ruled out.

An outside pick here would be Lennon who captained the side in the Europa League. Was that a test? We hear how he is a leader in the dressing room now. It would raise a few eyebrows but it could also make him a better player.

Dembele could conceivable do it, he leads by example, again would be a surprise choice.

Forwards, well will Defoe still be playing with our new striker and Bale playing number 10? Will Ade still be here, mind you he is probably the last person you would want to give it to.

Finally to pick one, Vertonghen has that captain's air about him. Not a fist pumping bulldog Parker, but the calm unruffled approach, the don't panic chaps, we'll turn it around feel.

Dawson - club captain
Vertonghen - captain when Daws doesn't play
Lennon/Parker - stand-in captains.

I'm not sure Sandro is a nailed on regular, don't get me wrong i think he is brilliant at what he does but i'm not sure he is a player that has sustained form over a long period yet to be worthy of the armband, he does have spells when he seems to lose himself still and i don't see him as a leader either ,you could argue he leads by example but don't mix up being an aggressive combative player with being a leader,

I do think the captains role is diminishing these days, but i hate it when we have a different captain in the tunnel nearly everytime we play, so for that reason alone i would pick a player who is almost certainly a regular and captains his national side..Lloris.

Sandro performed for the entire time he was playing, how can you possible feel he is not a nailed on regular? He is the first name you put on the teamsheet every week, and no I haven't forgotten Bale.

If you read my post, i said over a sustained period, half a season imo is not enough to make you captain..My argument for Lloris is that he will play everyweek and he has experience of captaining France....calm down .:)

Don't get your knickers in a twist.

I consider what he has shown over half a season to be sufficient to be picked every week. He will be picked every week, you are in a very very very tiny minority if you seriously think otherwise.

Besides which Lloris has been with us even less than Sandro and didn't play for the first part of the season so hasn't shown form for a sustained period (in your terms) for us either, in fact has shown it less than Sandro.

Is a goalkeeper stuck out the way the best player to lead us in the Premier League? He can't influence like an outfield player can.

At international level you are dealing with the best of the best so it's a lot easier to captain, players captain themselves at that level generally.

The point was made earlier, is his English good enough or will he be shouting in French?

Does it honestly matter who the captain is? The bigger personalities and characters in the team will always be respected no matter what and they will be the ones that the other players listen and look up to.

People over emphasise the captains role a little to much.

The captain should be the first name on the team sheet and for me that's a toss up between

Sandro and Lloris .

Would be happy for either to get it both inspirational in the way they perform . Dont need another SPM :)

Firstly I'm more of a boxers man :jimlad:...

Lloris v Sandro as captain is a no contest imo, Casillas,Buffon,Bartez,Schmichael .etc etc the list is endless of keepers succesfully captaining league sides when given the opportunity and loads more i cant be asked to note, so there is no proof that Lloris couldn't do it at a top 4 prem club like ours.

And just to inform you, Lloris speaks very good english and equally Sandro's is a little poor, seeing as you brought it up..sorry nearly got my boxers in a twist.

I think Vertonghen is primed for the job. If everyone plays to their ability then Vert and Kaboul should play the majority of the CH games nesxt season, that leaves Dawson on the outside

I agree it's a no contest, that's why I didn't pick Sandro but just talked about what most would consider a daft comment, that Sandro might not start every week.

I'm glad you know Lloris well enough to know his command of English, I've never met the man myself, but then I didn't bring that up, somebody else did, as I highlighted.

Having only watched interviews myself I can only use them to judge and his speech is slow as he thinks of translation, which of course is hopeless in the heat of battle. He probably needs another season for his command of the language to be fast as it needs to be for the Premier League.
