BBC Live Text
1836: GOAL- Panathinaikos 0-1 Tottenham - Michael Dawson
Tottenham have been the better side without testing the home side too much. Well, they've tested them now and Panathaniakos had no answer. Tom Huddlestone curls over a free-kick from the left which is met by the head of Michael Dawson at the near post and glanced into the far corner of the net. Good header, poor marking, Tottenham 1-0 up.
1841:YELLOW CARD - Tottenham - Gareth Bale
The winger is booked for a foul on a home player near the touchline. That is the first yellow card of the game.
1926:SUBSTITUTION - Tottenham - Gylfi Sigurdsson for Clint Dempsey
1935:SUBSTITUTION - Tottenham - Andros Townsend for Aaron Lennon
1936: GOAL - Panathinaikos 1-1 Tottenham - Toche
This was always the risk with the score at 0-1 and the game seemingly drifting. Tottenham switch off and Giourkas Seitaridis plays a superb pass that releases Toche in the box and he makes no mistake with a neat finish. How have Spurs allowed this to happen?
1940: SUBSTITUTION- Tottenham - Sandro for Tom Huddlestone
Townsend booked.

Just been browsing a few Villa boards and they're all very keen to see how strong our side is for tomorrow night as they know that will affect they're chances come Sunday.

I really hope we are resting a good few for Sunday that's for sure.

Reports suggesting that he won't be ready for the Greece game and is unlikely to be in the squad heading out there, more likely to be involved for the Villa game.

Naughton isn't fit either.

Dam it!!!! Who else could play LB besides Vert?

The good thing is that the international break will come just at the right time after the Villa game. Should allow Parker, Naughton, Ade, Livermore etc all to get back to full fitness.

Just read this predicted line up:

Tottenham Hotspur predicted line-up v Panathanaikos:
Hugo Lloris; Kyle Walker, Michael Dawson, Steven Caulker, Jan Vertonghen; Sandro, Moussa Dembele; Aaron Lennon, Clint Dempsey, Gareth Bale; Jermain Defoe.

I really hope we arn't starting all of them. Particularly Sandro and Dembele.

Agree, this will seriously impact the Villa game if so. I doubt they've recovered from Utd yet, and being our 3rd midweeker in a row, it's going to take it's toll. Verthongen needs a breather after playing in every game since WBA.

I know mate, was just checking out some Villa pre match thoughts to the game, and they're all hoping we play a strong side, like the one above, out in Greece because they know it increases there chances of getting something significantly. In fact most of them are non committal until they see what sort of side we are playing tomorrow night. That says it all IMO.

Its been playing on my mind the whole week and it will be such a pity if we drop points on Sunday after beating United, more than that - those points are then wasted in my mind.

I really he hope he picks a side that reflects the need for freshness come Sunday.

Yup, beat Villa, and beat them well then we are flying. I don't think it will ruin the Utd result though, I've been waiting for that for so long no one is taking that moment of glory away from me.

We can still get a result in Greece with a rotated side.

No it won't take away from the glory of beating them, that will never be touched!!! Just meant to get three points like that away from home, that we never get, and to throw them down the toilet due to not beating a distinctly average Villa side at home the following the week would be massively frustrating.

The worst thing about this is that if we lose to Villa on Sunday having played a strong team in Greece then there will be no doubt in people's minds that it was because we played a strong team in Greece. However, were we to lose on Sunday having played a weakened team in Greece everyone would reach for another reason.

The fact is we could lose on Sunday whichever team we play and I hope people remember that should the worst happen. It won't be that we wasted the victory at OT, it will be just as due to the vagaries of football which means we will definitely lose to some teams weaker than us this season, and we will definitely beat some teams stronger than us!

Anyway, on the Greece game, I really don't know what I'd do. The big thing is the recovery time between matches, there's 67 hours between the end of our match tmw and the start of the Villa game. Arsenal have three quarters of an hour longer between their games (albeit without the travelling), City only have 64 hours between their two ties (again without the travelling). For me it's pushing it, but I think the recovery time is just about there to make it worth risking a strong team. Win the match and we're virtually guaranteed to qualify from the group meaning we can take the next few European ties very easy, lose or draw it and we'll be having to field stronger teams down the line. The other thing I would say is that there's a lot to be said for playing a team which is new to itself, like our's is, as often as possible. The main players need time on the pitch to learn each other's games, and to foster a winning mentality.

For me then, it's about balancing the risks and rewards, and I think if everything's taken into account a strong case can be made for either course of action. If that's true, and if we accept that whichever course of action we choose it can all go right, or all go wrong, then we should be very wary of making snap judgements after the event regardless of either a positive or a negative outcome.

The travelling part should not be underestimated Sloth. As someone who travels by plane quite a lot I can testify to the fatiguing nature of it, even when it is short haul. I reckon just throwing in a return journey to Greece into that mix will have the effect of reducing recovery by 24 hours. Not just fatigue but flying seems to exasperate injuries (Pressure ?). Every time I fly my dodgy knee flares up a bit for example.

I really want us to do well in the UEFA this season, but I hope we are smart with who we rotate for the away game particularly. Sandro needs a rest, Hudd could play his role in Europe (slower less physical by nature). In Caulker and Dawson we have able stand-ins at CB. Smith I reckon is a very worthy RB stand in. Carroll is a good footballing leftie. Sigurdsson needs some game time.

Maybe:

Lloris
Smith Dawson Caulker Bale ?
Sigurdsson Hudd Carroll
Lennon Dempsey Townsend

Totally agree BC, and that side is something I would go a long with, although I reakon Vert might have to play. That midfield would be good enough in my mind, and the front three looks decent as well. The more minutes for Dempsey the better at the moment.

Travelling cattle class and travelling first class are very different. Their flying experience is probably one of the most relaxing stress free things a human could do. When us "joe's" travel it's horrenduosly uncomfortable and stressful.

Regarding strength for Thursday, we dropped home points against Lazio. If we are serious about this competition, we cant afford, IMO, to drop an more points.
