I was day-dreaming a while ago and was thinking about the goal Zidane scored in the CL final, that Volley at Hampden Park against Leverkusen and it led me on to wonder about my favourite goals of all time. I thought about different types of goal, like headers, volleys etc and came up with set of categories.
  1. Volleys
  2. Headers
  3. Solo
  4. Acrobatic
  5. Long range (from open play)
  6. Acute angles
There are probably more categories that can be devised but these are the categories that came up from goals that stuck in my memory for being exceptional.

So, in no particular order of favouritism, just following the above categories, the goals I remembered are:

1: Zidane vs Bayer Leverkusen Champions League Final 2002

2: Henrik Larsson vs Bulgaria Euro 2004

3: Michael Owen vs Argentina World Cup 98

4: Sibusiso Zuma vs Brøndby 2001

5: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Wigan

(see from 0:50 onwards for goal)

6: Roberto Carlos vs Tenerife

So what other goals are peoples favourites? New categories welcome!

Can't be arsed to think of all the different categories right now, but my favourite goal has to be Gazza's against Scotland in Euro 96...mainly because I was there in the best seats in the house (with Skinner & Baddiel immediately behind me, and Bobby Charlton about three seats to the right).

And the fact that it was an incredible goal. Coming so soon after the penalty miss, it was a special moment, as this vid illustrates...

Matt Le Tissier a cracking player who scored some belters. The one against blackburn from distance and the chip over schmeichel are highlights.

I also love some of the goals for Tony Yeboah.

Did anyone here ever see the goal Mark Hughes scored for either Barcelona or Bayern Munich? It was a forty yard scissor kick volley that flew into the top corner. It ws an absolutely incredible goal but I only ever saw it once as this was way before the Internet.

Rivaldo's hat trick goal for Barcelona vs Valencia on the last day of the season in a game that they needed to win to qualify for the Champions League.

I don't know if it's my all time favourite goal but it's definitely the best over head kick I've ever seen.

The Sky Sports commentary (Rob Palmer?) only added to the occasion.

At risk of sounding like an old fossil, a long time ago now, 68 or 69, but Jimmy Greaves against Leicester got the ball in his own half ran through the Leicester team a la Maradona round the keeper and in. As I recall he pretty much did it again against Newcastle, not sure if it was televised though.

I think that goal was in my dad's History of Spurs 1882-1993 VHS which I watched about a hundred times. Absolutely amazing. If it wasn't that one then he had another that was very similar!

not the best goal ever, or my favourite but it was a perfect at the time..

I remember watching that on Football Italia. Gooooooooooooooooallllaaaaaaaaaaazzoooooooooo!!!

These aren't really following the criteria of the OP, just some of my favourite goals ever.

Hoddle v Oxford

Davor Suker v Denmark (Euro 96) at 03:29

Ronaldo

Robbie Keane v Blackburn (at 01:56) - making a fool of Savage just makes it even better.

Huddlestone v Man City - such a sexy, sexy strike. On form assist, too.

That's the best goal I've ever seen.

Reminds me of an interview I saw about twenty years ago with Kevin Keegan. They asked him what his favourite goal was, and he said it was an overhead kick that was disallowed.

*edit - and here it is...
