He was outstanding against Liverpool and Arsenal. I'm not his biggest fan, but you need to give credit where due. He's a far better defender than Doc, and there's a time and place for his skills.
Was he? I watched him get beat 2-3 times against arsenal.

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea from that he improved towards the end of season. Against Burnley he got bollocked at least three times by Dier, Hojbjerg and Bentacour for not marking or for allowing crosses. He looked completely lost at times.
He 100% improved defensively but still offered very little attacking wise, but he didn’t improve to a standard where he should be here at the start of the season imo

I like him a lot and like his enthusiasm and the feel good factor he portrays but not gonna lie I am so desperate for us to get a really good RWB... feel that could really be a game changer and moreso than an attacking player and even another defender - I can handle who we have at the back three but cant handle Doherty and Emerson as our main two

Im not even sure Spence is the one who will change things as Doherty and Emerson would still be ahead of him for pretty much majority of the season.

Emerson wasnt too bad today to be honest

I thought he looked a lot better than sess. I know it’s pre season but he showed all the same issues he always does.

The thing is Perisic is a world class player so sess is naturally second choice, although he will get plenty of game time. Meaning we have excellent options that side.

On the other side we have Doherty and Emerson who have combined good form of about 7 weeks in 3 years or spurs. We’re in desperate need of a rwb, it was the most needed upgrade in the team. Really need to get someone in.

Emerson did look slightly better than Emerson but like Joshua says - Perisic will be the main guy but rotating with Sess. Im comfortable with that.

I am slightly nervous about the RWB because even if we get Spence, and im ok with that, I still think that is our weak side.

Put it this way - if I was a coach of the opposition - id target that right side of ours all day long.

Potentially countered by Romero being that side.

How do you know this ? not sure we'd be going through all this trouble if he is going to be behind Doh and Emerson.

I meant the last home game
The game we won despite literally the entire team playing 3/10 save for a flukey pen that Harry did what Harry does?

He definitely picked up form towards the end of the season.

Sess was far better in the big matches where he defended well and had space to run into, I think he’ll be useful again in that sense this season while Perisic will be great against the teams that sit back and are tough to break down. It’s a perfect balance for LWB

Yup agreed, sess pocketed Salah in two matches and had good space against Liverpool, couple that with it looking like he seriously beefed up during the break, just needs some composure and we have a serious player there, hope perisic can show him the ropes a little in the going forward department

You can drag Romero out of position as a result and then there is a knock on effect of Dier being out of position to cover etc. I actually think Emerson is a decent defender just not so much patrolling that entire side the way say a Perisic would has shown. I just feel it is our weak side and hoping Doherty reverts back to his wolves form (I didnt take much notice of him at Wolves so i cant say if he was that great but some of the posters view son here think he was good enough)

Can’t see both Royal and doc staying if we get the Spence deal done . Doherty can play both sides and is more suited to a wing back roll so I can see us selling Emerson

I wouldn't be suprised personally if we were to go with 5 full backs until January and take it from there. At Inter Conte often substituted both wingbacks (at reasonable times) with the 5 sub rule, something you can't do if just one of them is out injured or suspended, if you only have four. With Doherty coming back from injury, Perisic having a pre-season injury and Sessegnon have never completed more than 6 league games on the bounce for us, four WBs might be a little bit of a risk.

Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal for a right back today, Nahuel Molina from Udinese.
Given we’re now definitely signing Spence, 3 right backs is overkill.
Atletico seemed most likely for Emerson so who knows where that leaves this situation now.

I think Emerson survives the summer due to a lack of suitors but also just being a decent bloke who’s popular with the squad and a grafter who is taking on board Conte’s coaching. I think it’s quite clear he’s not the level or profile we need going forward but it wouldn’t be a blow if he’s still around come the end of the window like it would be with some others.

Don't think of it as 3 RWBs - think of it as 5 WBs - which is ideal for a demanding position.
