There has been a good deal of worrying about Hugo Lloris of late, here and in France, even if his Tottenham Hotspur manager yesterday described him as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Horrible mistakes and indecision against Manchester City on Saturday were on the back of costly clangers in other recent games and it has been an indifferent season for the Spurs captain.
Lloris is either going through a rough patch or starting to show signs of decline.....
....Lloris has made five mistakes that have led directly to league goals this season, and the statisticians did not attribute either mistake as down to him in the 3-1 defeat by City. He made just two costly errors last season and three in the campaign before. Tottenham have also conceded 30 league goals this season, more than than they did in the whole of the 2016-17 campaign.
When he recklessly charged out of his goal and scythed down Raheem Sterling on Saturday, Lloris showed his tendency to panic in one-on-one situations. It was a similar picture a week earlier when he raced off his line to clear a through ball and hammered it straight at Mame Biram Diouf, who equalised for Stoke City.
Another of his weaknesses was highlighted a fortnight ago when he flapped at a cross and Álvaro Morata nodded Chelsea into the lead. Lloris redeemed himself with stops, and Tottenham won 3-1, but it was not the only time that he has struggled with crosses. He is relatively short for a goalkeeper, at 6ft 2in, and this counts against him with high crosses. There are 12 other goalkeepers in the top flight who are more successful at claiming high balls.........
2nd goal he was put in a situation where he had to take a risk and gave away a penalty.
3rd goal no defenders around to stop the rebound.
