I think it's probable that AVB genuinely believed, based on assurances from a man he trusted, that We wouldn't sell Bale. Given what actually happened and the consequences both on and off the pitch, I'm not at all surprised that he left.
Whether he was sacked or whether he resigned is a matter of semantics, but the impact on the club of the whole episode cannot be underestimated.
Pottechino may have many of the characteristics of AVB, but to my mind that is a positive thing and the basis for some considerable optimism.
