Pundits who pronounce names wrongly...

The problem really lies in a false sense of cosmpolitanism. People and in this case commentators often feel obliged to try and pronounce words as they are spoken in any given foreign language, as though they have a level of proficiency in French or Portuguese, when the person pronouncing the name probably won't have a clue how to order a cup of coffee in that language.

The whole thing is wildly inconsistent - the widely accepted but incorrect stress on Abramovich's name, the garbled idiocy we endure as commentators pretend that they can speak Brazillian Portuguese and so on.

Just pronounce the names as English words and stop worrying about it.

There is some English butchering from the ESPN south american commentators every once in a while that is really cringeworthy. They've learnt to pronounce the i like "eye" as english speakers do which is correct but can't distinguish when it doesn't. So when they have to bring up a name like Liam, they pronounce it "Lie-am", Lineker is "Line-eker". I would brush it off initially as it's an understable mistake but it's been going on for years by the same journalists (people who are well travelled, who've spent time in english speaking countries) and I've honestly can't recall having heard those two in particular pronounced right.

Another example, every team ending with the suffix "mouth", they pronounce as in the actual body part, and that in turn produces blood in my ears. But you might hear others in the same company get it right. I'm just amazed to this point, they haven't learnt by themselves or nobody's corrected them.

my beef is with pundits who cannot even pronounce the name of a player ,and these pundits in particular paul merson seem to think it is funny or endearing that they cannot pronounce a name properly where I find this bad practice from a so called professional pundit ;the least they could do is find out how to pronounce a player name

It's actually quite refreshing to read that they are as shit at this as we are.

It is also the cause of intense irritation that names aren't pronounced using the regional accent of where the player is from.

Fuck it. In for a penny..........

Of all the things to get narky about, mispronunciation of a player's name?

I sometimes wonder if some people wake up in the morning and say to themselves, "Right, what shall I choose to be angry about today?"

What pisses me off is when they make the effort to seem like they're pronunciating them correctly by sounding foreigny, and still failing.

Emre Can is the worst. Everyone would call him Chan for a few seasons. Wtf? Where the fuck did the CH come from?

The Ch sound from Charlie in Turkish is Ç
The Ca sound from can't in Turkish is K
The J sound from Jackson in Turkish is C

It's Emre Can with the J from Jackson. Jan, like the month, if you like.

Why go through the trouble of making an assumption of how a foreign name sounds then base that assumption on diddly squat and get it wrong anyway?
Interesting. Is it a proper English J sound or more like the first bit of Dzeko?

Exactly the way you'd pronounce 'the first of Jan[uary]. Though if you were saying it in Turkish the 'ah' sound in the middle would be heavier. Sort of like the 'u' fun.

But in English, Jan is fine because we're not Turkish and that's how Turks would pronounce it when speaking English anyway.

Van der Vaart is actually pronounced Fan der Fart. No English commentator is getting that right, for some reason.
