I for one am quite happy that we didn't even consider Ballack. Old, injured, high wages, no thanks. Gone are the days when, instead of Bales, Modric's, Huddlestones and Defoes we siged Zieges, Poyet, Redknapp and Sheringham.

The Poyet signing was a real low point for me, I'm sure I was watching some sport on the TV(Grandstand maybe) and a caption came onto saying Spurs were about to announce a signing, when the player was named underwhelmed didn't quite cover my reaction

Had this debate with Pinto, about why I didn't think it was a good idea to go for him, even though I do consider him to be an exceptional player and would have been overjoyed at it two years ago. I referred back several times to those signings. One player for experience and guidance - ala udjohnsen, ala Edgar Davids, is fine, but a team composed primarily of them...:eek:mg: And when they would be displacing members of our young, exciting and improving squad...Eek

Oh, here he is:grin: Pinto, Joe Cole is 28 - an age widely considered to be whne players generally are at their peak. And he isn't injured he has recently recovered from an injury...which is a different thing.

It was a joke SP but wasn't Robbie Keane 28 or 29 when he lost that half a step or so and just hasn't looked the same since, and he didn't even have an injury he just got old. Sure back in the day 28 was the prime for most players but I would argue with players playing earlier in their career their legs just give out earlier than they used to.

As for the recovered from injury, if that is how Cole plays after recovering from injury I don't want him at Spurs, he played 38 times in all competitions last year and had a grand total of 2 goals and 5 or 6 assists. So which is it, is he just not that good or is his injury still a problem?

I would also think Cole would just be displacing some young player on our squad as well, like Modric or Niko or maybe even Bale. So maybe I should just agree about Ballack and use your argument for Cole.

Anyway, like I said it was just a joke and wouldn't mind Cole coming in but just don't think he is world class or going to push us over the top and win us titles is all. He also has serious question marks in enough areas I wouldn't mind if we stayed clear of him like Man U and Chelsea seem to be doing as well.

Ballack has been making Fat Frank look good for ages.

Look at how Frank played for England with Gerrard next to him. He was crying for Ballack in the WC.

Ballack would have provided us leadership, experience, mentorship and he is a QUALITY goal scoring midfielder. Just because he was given a role in Chelsea to be less attacking, does not mean he can't score for fun given a regular box to box role.

Look at what Davids did for us. Christian Ziege was great for us too! A diamond in a shitty team. Then his life threatening injury did for him.

He would have given Spurs a lot of positives. IMO of course.

We have skill, flair, pace, athleticism coming out of our arses. What we need is that intangible IT factor that sways refs, screams at players for not doing the right thing, questions/fights for every ball and gets the respect in the dressing room.

Not sure listening about who Defoe shagged on the weekend, and Crouch doing the robot is going to inspire the Bostocks of the team to bleed for the badge.

Ballack hasn't been making Frank look good, Franks been making Frank look good and he's been doing it from long before Ballack arrived, hell, from before Mourinho arrived. The reason he was a flop again is because again, he was without his two defensive midfielders that allow him to effectively be a second forward. Instead, he was a central midfielder expected to do all the harrying and running of a central midfielder. At Chelsea he's had Essien and Mikel/ Ballack, and before that Essien and Makalele and sometimes Tiago. The same argument can be applied to Gerrard, who has been at his very best with both Alonso and Masherano.

Ballack, had we signed him, would be no different to Tim Sherwood ten years ago. He'd do the odd very good thing but he's be shown up for being so off the pace constantly and he'd resort to thuggery when his legs weren't up to it.

You just said you agree with me that Ballack was one of his water carriers.

Then you state that he would be no different from Sherwood? That is your opinion. And I disagree with it. Not just the opinion, but the relevance of the current Spurs squad to the Sherwood era.

I think you know as well as I that what I'm trying to say is that Lampards form is nothing to do with Ballack specifically, but to do with the presence of two players to do the ugly stuff for him. We already have Huddlestone, Palacios and now even Sandro on the defensive side of the coin, and we may well only play with one of them a lot of the time anyway now that it seems as though Harry likes the idea of Modric as a central players at least some of the time.

And no, I do not think Ballack would be an improvement on either of Huddlestone or Palacios (can't comment on Sandro yet) in either of their gametypes. He is way past it. Like I said, I reckon he'd resemble the Tim Sherwood that we signed, a previously talismanic midfielder whos legs had gone and with it, his effectiveness and discipline.
