I often wonder what the heck people are watching after reading through this thread week on week. Some of the "assessments" are frickin mind blowing.

It's quite apparent that it was far from one of our better overall performances but I would strongly argue that this was as much due to the quality of opposition than anything. That doesn't make it ok, not by any stretch but there was clearly an air of complacency in our play in the 2nd half, particularly the last quarter. I would argue that wass because Villa offered almost nothing in the game until they got their goal and that was only from us being sloppy in possession and the shot took a big deflection. Only after their undeserved goal did they actually start to put us under some pressure and again that was more our own doing than anything else.

Once we finally got our shit together we scored what was a lovely 3rd goal. Great passing move, crackin finish and it proved how much better we were than Villa if we just stopped messing about. The game could've been killed off far earlier but I feel we sometimes get drawn into playing down to our opponent rather than just sticking to what we're good at. It happens all too often in the Europa League, the last game vs Anderlecht being a prime example.

As far as individuals go, those saying Lamela was MOTM are high on something. As others have mentioned, the last 10 mins was the only time that he really had any impact, before that he had a LOT of heavy touches and contributed very little. Reality though is that he got another good assist and even in his weaker games he manages to have a positive impact.

Excellent: Toby, Walker, Dier, Dembele
Good: Alli, Jan, Rose, Eriksen, Kane
Average: Lamela, Lloris

I'm putting Kane in the Good category cos he got his goal with a very assured finish but he did struggle at times. He was often double marked or set upon by more than one player as soon as he got it but I felt that he was trying too hard to score instead of letting the game just come to him. There were too many head down moments looking to get a shot off when he's far better at working with his teammates to need to do that. He takes up good positions so the ball will inevitably find him for chances to score (as it did for his goal) he doesn't need to try and force it.
Here's a summary which I think is pretty spot on

And here's those heavy touches your on about all 2 of them.

I have not rated this as it was obviously a wind up post. Rose was excellent in everything he did and had some outstanding moments. He is an important player for us

He really wasn't. He had a decent game but at least 3 or 4 times he hit the first man when in a good position and with plenty of time to put a cross in. With the system we play we really need more productivity from both sets of fullbacks going forward.

MOTM for me is Dembele.

I have no idea what has happened to him but he looks like he has a fire in his belly that he's never had before.

The strength, the close control, the way he rolls away from players and drives forward. He's always had those things but seemed to lack some key ingredient.

Honestly, at the moment he's a joy to watch.

I think he's probably fit in a way we haven't seen for a long time. My MOM although close between him and Dier. We fell apart for a while when Dembele went off.

Lloris..........5.......Focus mon capitan, focus. Good game to get his mistakes in.
Walker.,,,,,,,7.......Rapidly becoming Mr. Sensible. Who'd have thought it.
Toby...........7+.....Good again with added crossfield passes.
Jan.............7.......Not a lot of pressure which suits him.
Rose...........7.......I like him but an erratic performance. Wasted crossing opportunities.
Dier.............8.......Warming to the boy. Top class first half. Bit edgy second.
Alli...............7......Well taken goal, always there or therabouts.
Dembele......7.......Not sure what Mauricio has said to him but bears repeating constantly.
Erikson........7+.....Understated as usual but key to nearly everything.
Lamela.........7......Another assist. Kept his head when all about him others were losing theirs.
Kane............6+....Fine goal to finish off the game. Always puts in the effort but well marked.

Mason......Good to seehim back pity about the goal.
Onomah...Could get to really like another of our own if he gets game time.
Davies......Didn't notice him much which is how I like our defenders

Minus one for everyone for the poor opposition except for ten minutes when they all but snatched a draw.
Its nearly firwork day and they all need a large rocket where it would do most good.
Almost the perfect Spurs performance. Poor opposition, early goal, two up at half time.
Lethargy prevails and opponents rally, we defend deeper and get sloppy.
2-0 up always has been a dangerous score for Spurs..
Big week, Off to a succesful start. How come they make a fixture computer that's an Arsenal fan.

People moaning about Dembele passing back so often clearly looked at the stats, and didn't bother to watch the game. Villa were more than happy to sit extremely deep so as not to get battered. Dembele played most of the game with his back to goal and was a constant outlet its why we maintained possession so well, and is no wonder he played so many balls backwards.

As for the performance we did what was required and clearly had another couple of gears had we needed them. I'm more than. Happy for us to play within ourselves, when we have two important games coming so close together.

Thought Rose was better, but I still worry he leaves too much space when he jaunts fotward. Arsenal will have a field day if he plays that way on Sunday.

Not such an issue now for me since Dier drops into the back 4 and Vertonghen moves wider. Was a huge issue before when Bentaleb offered no cover though.

All defenders played well and Dier, no great stand out. Cant believe that Lamela got a lot of votes though- I thought he was awful, until the last 10 minutes.

Thing is I don't think you always need to stand out for 90 minutes to be motm. He was decent for 80 mins but his contribution in the last 15 was stand out, because it changed the momentum and put us back on top. Also playing where he does is not as influential a position as say CM where you will always be involved.

Although I didn't vote for him I can see why others did.

He has only to pass the ball successfully and some think that makes him a top footballer.

Was very below average most of the game he gets better as the opposition tire.

Rose was decent tonight. He's turned out to be a quality little left back for us.
His play in the final third is still pretty horrible tbh. Very wasteful. We need more value from our FBs in the final third if we really want to do things going forward.

I will say, though, that we still haven't hit on the right blend of FB/AWr on either side.

I think Son is a crucial part of our game now, already, and he will help immensely in this respect.

Lloris - 6 - not much to do. one or two strange errors in judgment
Walker - 6 - did okay. started making weird choices when were under the kosh
Verts - 8 - thought he had a very solid game
Toby - 6 - did good. but distribution in the first half was poor

dier - 7 - mostly solid. had a hard time in the last 20 -- but that experience will serve him well. don't give a shit what some of his haters say, the kid is a winner with a fantastic attitude. dare I say, a touch of blanchflower about him?
Alli - 7 - great goal. tired toward the end. but all around shows great energy and maturity.

ericksen - 6 - was good, but not one of his better games
dembele - 7 - lovely goal, good hold up play, but got tired toward the end
lamela - 7 quiet first half. busy in the second.

kane - 7 - worked hard as usual. but was often running into walls. lovely finish to cap it off

all in all, I thought MOM, goes to the team. it was a solid team performance that didn't rely on individual tenacity or brilliance to get us the points. we played as a unit, and it showed how far we've come in the last 18 months. well done to the coach.

so l take it you don't like Rose then?

"He was so average as usual"

Why would I bother wasting my time pointing out so many reasons why that statement couldn't be more wrong when it's obvious you have an agenda against him of will never rate him if you believe what you posted.

Our best outfield player other than Kane last season, won his place back in the PL XI this season, MOM vs Everton I believe, poses far more of a threat than Davies or Walker and has improved massively defensively over the past 18 months. Average he is not.
Biggest load of Bull-Crap ever.. I have praised him in the past when he warranted it.. this season he has been bang average, for every good thing he does.. he will do equally as many wrong. It seems Rose gets praised for not been awful. The truth is he can't be faulted for effort however when it comes to the basics like crossing, positioning & technical ability he's just not that good.

We have West Ham in a couple of weeks & Bilic is a smart cookie I bet he will target our left back whether it be Rose or Davies (even worse than Danny). Keep praising mediocrity if you like.

I thought it was more like working his ass off and providing the magic when in the right position.
For me that's what a quality player does.

I thought Lamela was one of our better performers. Worked hard throughout the match, played with intelligence and composure and really took responsibility for the last 10-15 minutes when we needed someone to put their foot on the ball to kill Villas momentum. He also played quite a few sublime flicks I remember one in particular where he controlled the ball on his chest and slid a through ball into the path of Kane on one movement. It's really a joy to watch him find some consistency in his performances this season.

Walker has impressed me this year. He is reducing his defensive errors/lapses. I love his commitment to the cause, always goes 100%.

Dier is seriously impressive. I like his small on field tantrums and crunching tackles. Finally a bit of bite in our midfield.

Surprised Lamela getting so many votes, thought he was pretty average most of the game.

Dier and Dembele controlled the game bar that dodgy 10 mins just after Villa scored

Thanks for all the stats but stats dont always tell the full story imo.

I get that you're a big Lamela fan and I'm not saying he didn't do well in parts but for me it wasn't one of his better games and I'm entitled to think that. It's also somewhat open to interpretation with regard to his heavy touches. I think he had more than 2 but then who am I to go against the might of whoscored.com.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion.
Mine and yours just differ that's all.
I respect that and if everyone thought the same what a boring world it would be.

Lamela excels when the game is open and he has room to operate. This oftens coincides with the end periods of matches whereby his final 10-15mins makes you forget his preceeding averageness.

Same as last night. Still, think he has alot more to come but he isnt blowing me away just yet.

The defensive bedrocks of our team once again the key players for me. Toby, Erik et al.

from four four two

"Erik Lamela didn't receive many plaudits for his role in the game on Monday night, but the Argentine has pushed his game on once again this season. He created the most chances of any Spurs player and provided a great assist to Harry Kane for the coup de grace."

Pass Accuracy

Eriksen 90%
Lamela 88.2%
Alli 83.3 %
Dier 83%
Dembele 76.7%

Tackles----Possession recovery --Interceptions

Alli 2-8-3
Dier 7- 2-1
Eriksen 2-5-1
Lamela 2-5-1
Dembele 1-5-0

Chances Created (key Pass)

Lamela 5
Eriksen 4
Dier 1
Alli 1
Dembele 0
------------------------

the work rate in terms of tackling and recovery for our 5 midfielders is exceptional, even though last night seemed like one of our lesser days.

Also to the folks saying lamela was shit etc apart from the final ten minutes, well obviously he wasn't. But I suppose you can't prove anything with facts
