Here's a summary which I think is pretty spot onI often wonder what the heck people are watching after reading through this thread week on week. Some of the "assessments" are frickin mind blowing.
It's quite apparent that it was far from one of our better overall performances but I would strongly argue that this was as much due to the quality of opposition than anything. That doesn't make it ok, not by any stretch but there was clearly an air of complacency in our play in the 2nd half, particularly the last quarter. I would argue that wass because Villa offered almost nothing in the game until they got their goal and that was only from us being sloppy in possession and the shot took a big deflection. Only after their undeserved goal did they actually start to put us under some pressure and again that was more our own doing than anything else.
Once we finally got our shit together we scored what was a lovely 3rd goal. Great passing move, crackin finish and it proved how much better we were than Villa if we just stopped messing about. The game could've been killed off far earlier but I feel we sometimes get drawn into playing down to our opponent rather than just sticking to what we're good at. It happens all too often in the Europa League, the last game vs Anderlecht being a prime example.
As far as individuals go, those saying Lamela was MOTM are high on something. As others have mentioned, the last 10 mins was the only time that he really had any impact, before that he had a LOT of heavy touches and contributed very little. Reality though is that he got another good assist and even in his weaker games he manages to have a positive impact.
Excellent: Toby, Walker, Dier, Dembele
Good: Alli, Jan, Rose, Eriksen, Kane
Average: Lamela, Lloris
I'm putting Kane in the Good category cos he got his goal with a very assured finish but he did struggle at times. He was often double marked or set upon by more than one player as soon as he got it but I felt that he was trying too hard to score instead of letting the game just come to him. There were too many head down moments looking to get a shot off when he's far better at working with his teammates to need to do that. He takes up good positions so the ball will inevitably find him for chances to score (as it did for his goal) he doesn't need to try and force it.
