West Ham United prepared to sacrifice Ravel Morrison in pursuit of new January signings
Sam Allardyce will be allowed to sign players next month and the club are ready to cash in on Morrison

By Jason Burt

West Ham United are prepared to sell Ravel Morrison in the January transfer window to boost the funds to strengthen Sam Allardyce’s injury-ravaged squad.

Allardyce’s position as manager is not under threat despite West Ham being in the bottom three and money will be made available when the window opens even if Morrison is not sold.

However, it is understood that the 20-year-old midfielder, who has 18 months left on his current contract, can go if an acceptable bid is tabled.

West Ham have already received enquiries over Morrison.

The player’s current deal is complicated and West Ham would like to renegotiate it if he does stay.

It includes a £18 million release clause and a second clause which states Morrison’s pay will quadruple to £60,000 a week if a £10 million offer is made for him.

However, that clause is further complicated as the bid would have to be unconditional and the £10 million would also have to be made in one up-front payment rather than in stages, as is the norm in most transfers.

That is likely to put off potential suitors but West Ham are aware of interest in Morrison who has made his breakthrough this season having finally settled down.

West Ham signed the England Under-21 international from Manchester United for an initial £650,000, rising by £25,000 per appearance, and would make a significant profit if he is sold even though it is unclear what level of bid they would accept.

Selling Morrison would be an unpopular move among West Ham supporters but the club is hoping to make around four signings when the January window opens with bids expected for the Everton pair of defender Johnny Heitinga and striker Nikica Jelavic, who have both been told they can leave Goodison Park.

West Ham would also like to sign Demba Ba but he is unlikely to return to Upton Park should he leave Chelsea.

There has been speculation over Allardyce’s future with the manager admitting that his position could come under threat unless results improved.

He even labelled the 3-3 draw at home against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday as a “must-win” match prior to kick-off.

However, West Ham’s owners accept that Allardyce’s job has been made harder by the injuries that have struck and have traditionally been reluctant to sack managers mid-season – not least because of the financial cost it entails.

At the same time they cannot countenance relegation from the Premier League with the proposed move to the Olympic Stadium.

Co-chairman David Sullivan confirmed that Allardyce retained the board’s support.

“We back our manager, we have four key players out on long-term injuries, but we are doing all we can to sign reinforcements early in January,” he told Telegraph Sport.

West Ham are missing record signing Andy Carroll, who has yet to play this season, plus key defender Winston Reid, winger Stewart Downing and Ricardo Vaz Te, while James Tomkins limped out of Saturday’s match.

They now face a crunch game away to fellow strugglers Fulham on New’s Year Day.

We should put in the bid just so they have to quadruple his wages which they can't afford to do if relegated. Then buy him for £3 million when they are desperate to sell to get the wages off their books. That'll teach them to come to the lane & spoil our fun. Also sounds like something levy would do as payback for the Olympic stadium fiasco (plus a cut from the agent to cover some OS legal fees).

His talent is unquestionable.
There's a lot to consider though.
First of all we'd need to sell a midfielder or two as well (Sigurdsson?).
Then there's also the matter of if he fit our club:
Are we going to play 442 always under Sherwood? Where do we use Morrison?
Also are we planning for Louis van Gaal from the summer,
he has insane demand to players disipline and work ethic - how does Morrison cope with that considering his past?
Many questions, but it's an exciting link. Even if it's just to make the Hammers crazy, even just the paper link will get them riled up :)
