Watching that compilation of Rondon's goals at Zenit, the majority come from crosses.

So, the question is whether we get enough crosses into the box from wide areas to feed a player like Rondon as and when he's in the team?

Obviously Trippier has great delivery, KWP has good potential (2 x assists for Lamela in one game), and Rose & Davies occasionally hit a decent cross. But the likes of Eriksen, Dele, Son, Lamela & Moura rely far more on clever play around the box to create chances rather going wide and delivering crosses.

Made same point about Llorente last season, (with a lot of people disagreeing with me on here)
Rondon is not suited to our style of play

Would be nothing wrong with this signing if wanted to play with a strong target man. We don't play that way, and if we did then Llorente wouldn't have been as shit as he has.

Wrong type of player. I think that another PL team could do good business if they got him.

Surely there are better back up strikers out there, why are we raiding the relegation fodder.

We played well with Son up front and looked fluid. Llorente is a better player and we don’t suit him. Use that money towards another flexible forward of actual class.

Who says we're actually in for him though, other than some questionable newspaper reports?

Personally i don't think he is what we would need as a backup but....

I can see the appeal of him, he is a big, strong, athletic striker who is willing to run all the time and do all the dirty work AND would be content to be a backup (and get paid as such) on a top of the table team.

I don't think he fits our style and am not sure he would score enough to really address our back up striker issues but i could see why we might look at him.

Was chatting to my West Brom supporting mate and he offered his perspective on Rondon:

"with the right service he'll hit 15 goals a season easy

If you watch his highlights on YouTube, he's not really a striker in the way west Brom used him. He's best as part of a front three. He's got great finishing around the box and uses his head well but he isn't a target man at all. I think with two players alongside him, his movement and pace will be threatening. At Zenit he scored 20 goals and they won the league.

He was absolutely wasted as a lone striker because there was nobody to exploit the space he could provide, and if he was holding up the ball instead of being in the box, who the fuck is meant to be scoring?

At Zenit he linked up play between the attack and midfield - that's what he should have been able to do at west brom. The thing is, Hal Robson Kanu is no Hulk.

I think he'd be raring to go - he's really put a shift in and applied himself at WBA under a system that he can't have been enjoying."

For me that makes it sound like he'd be a much better fit for our system than someone like with Janssen or Llorente has been, and moves this into the realms of probably being a decent transfer for a player who'd be a rotation option rather than undroppable.

so the best u could come up with is Chicharito, lol, who hasn’t been in the Prem for 3 years couldn’t have made my point any better
Not trying to disprove or prove anything mate, just pointing out the best backup striker I’ve ever seen. His form was absurd for a player who never got a real run in the side. Fergie threw him on at 75’ you’d always fancy him to poach a goal.

I'd like to think we have a youngster who could take the Kane understudy Role but, if Llorente wants our and Poch feels we don't have anyone, we're going to struggle to get someone better who would be willing to play Kane backup. Obvs, if he was our only forward signings, it would be poor but all the noise is we also want someone like Martial/Zaha who could do jobs up top if Kane was out long term

Hope we don't fall into the trap of spending money from budget on what will likely be a haphazard backup striker just because we feel we need a backup striker.

Strikers near enough always require game time to maintain form and sharpness, something you won't get here. No matter the quality of the player all that will happen from sitting on bench is they become a worthless option due to their form disappearing.

There is not a single striker on the planet who you'd class as quality who will sign for Spurs with Kane here. You end up with prospects (Janssen), experience (Llorente) or second rate strikers (Rondon). All end the same way that most footballers who aren't getting game time would.

Don't bother with a backup Striker only able to play at 9. Either simply use Son as backup or buy someone who will start games on left or right but can also play up top, something that means he's in form and sharp if needed to deputise for Kane.

we do need a striker in August though, Kane doesn't like scoring in August:whistle:

No. You have to look at players who can also play as an attacking mid so they aren't rotting on the bench getting rusty when Kane is playing.

don't get me wrong, because I'd not want Rondon either, but if we was to get Martial, he would be a very good stand in if Kane was out, but for him to play regular which he wants to do and one of the reasons he wants out of Man U, will then mean a struggle for a place for Son. Yes rotation will be needed, but even rotation to this position will cause rustiness. I honestly believe if we get Martial, it will cause us to lose Son sooner rather than later

Rondon 16m, Janssen 19 million, Llorente 12 mil, total of 47million for clear backup quality strikers. Thats actually the price that Chelsea probably want for Batshuayi now, not that they would sell to us.

and why did Batshuayi want to leave Chelsea?

and didn't do too much with his chances
