Not really. I agree that I'd rather see us win a trophy than finish 4th, but regular CL qualification means a better chance of keeping our best players, signing better players, and generally being in a better position to compete for trophies on a regular basis.

Obviously regular CL qualification is no guarantee of trophies (just look at the gooners), but if the game is all about winning stuff, the money and fame that the CL brings would definitely improve our chances.

Harry certainly made a good go at it. Missed out on the league cup in a penalty shoot-out, two FA cup semi-finals, and two top four finishes tells me that he did more to have us competing for honours than any other manager of recent years.

Thanks for the response. I agree & was merely commenting on the (in my opinion) wrong comment about someone who won nothing being our most successful manager for a decade. I never dismissed his achievements, I never belittled him personally, I just explained my idea of success.

Playing shit football.

Sorry, I didn't realise I was debating anything to do with the style of football? As I've said to Spurger King, I was simply stating that you & I clearly have a very different idea as to what equates as 'successful'. There was a guy who explained my feelings about 'success' much better than I'm able to. He said.......................

"If you don't win anything, you have had a bad season." ......

"Spurs have got to be the best in the land, not the second best."......

I'm not him, I just share his ideals

He also said:

It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory.

AVB v Redknapp who would Sir Bill vote for?

Not sure mate? I'd ask him but it'd be hard to get through to him right now (y)

Still, just for your amusement, I'll answer your question from my perspective. Considering one of those managers was nothing but dismissive of a European competition, describing it as "a distraction" and "a nuisance", whilst the other one was actually interested in winning that distraction & nuisance of a European competition. So, I'd guess that the gentleman in question would've edged towards the manager who had an interest in actually winning any silverware that was up for grabs, rather than one who was ready to simply discard such an opportunity in hope that we 'may' qualify for a competition that we've got practically zero chance of 'winning'.

Hope that has gone some way towards answering your question, GB? The point is (hopefully) pretty clear? It's not about whether AVB was better than Redknapp, it's about Redknapp being described as "the most successful manager we've had in a decade". The over-all point being, nothing was 'won', so there was no 'success'.

I am a sportsman (or was when health permitted it). I won a good amount of silverware in various different sports, and that's what it's all about. Success in sport, in my opinion, is defined by what you 'win'. Redknapp had a great season when we finished 4th, I'm not denying that. AVB had a great season when he ended a season with a record points haul in the PL, I'm not denying that. Neither of them win bugger all, and that is what I think matters most.

Did I like George Graham? Heck no, but the bloke won us silverware.
Did I like Ramos? Not especially, but the bloke won us silverware (and against the Chavs too (y) ).

Those guys, as awful as we regard them, achieved 'Success' at THFC.

Not having a pop at you, but far to often members latch on to a tail end of a discussion and turn it into a argument, without reading the full context of the discussion, must happen to all of us at some point.(y)

Would take Eto'o on 1 year deal, send Kane to a PL club where he would be first starter for a fee paying loan and we wouldn't take too much of a hit

I don't see a team in PL that would put him in the team regularly.

Best chance would be Championship and in particular Blackpool.

Hang around the Tower long enough and we might get a game!

If you feel 'success' is winning a cup with a lucky cup run and weak offering in every other competition you are welcome to it.

Do you want an open top bus parade every 6-10 years at the expense of long term squad development and league placing?

We should be looking at raising our ambitions as a club for sustained success and that only comes from finishing 4th and above.

I'd rather win the Europa League and come 17th in the league than come 2nd

It gets you the same financial results while the 25 man squad goes down in Tottenham history

The Europa league win would be great...but how embarrassing for us if we ended up 17th in the league. Would seriously detract from any cup success. 2nd in the prem would be a huge achievement for us. I would be happy with Europa league runners up and 3rd position in the league

I would love to win the Europa but if we finished 17th our squad must have been playing cack football and would be struggling for confidence. That coupled up with the fans would be on the back of the manger & fans means whatever success we had would be overlooked.

Maybe your point should've been 'win EL, Play attractive football where we try to build a style and ideology and at worst finish top 10, showing signs that we wouldn't be embarrassed the next season'!

Jeez - I've read the thread since Thursday this afternoon thinking there might be some more news on this. Gun. My own head. Point. Pull trigger.
