It is a contract anyway, however you take it out... However there is an obligation to draw attention to any term that may be deemed unusual or erroneous. Having to cancel a contract, taken out by phone/internet, via snail mail is in my opinion unusual, especially given that you can cancel sky via telephone and Setanta certainly did not draw my attention to the term!

totally agree, as far as i could see there was no mention of written cancellation in terms and conditions and i dont think the site provides any information pointing to it directly, it does give phone numbers for further information???? - the case i know of was started after a dd was cancelled and their customer service telephoned and virtually demanded it be re setup as they had not been given 30 days notice, this was followed by numerous calls and letters - after a few months of what seemed like harrasement they sent in a dca. the result i will not post publicly.

If I didn't get Setanta as part of the Virgin XL package I wouldn't have it... have they got any new content on it to justify the extra £3?

Written cancellation is contained in clause 8. My argument is that it is too difficult to find that clause based on 1, how important it is and 2, how unusual it is. it also looks like setanta's advertising ethics have been called into question before. http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/adjudications/Public/TF_ADJ_43977.htm

The problem with the case you mentioned is that the person was in breach so setanta were entitled to start proceedings to recover the debt. The person in question would have had to defend the action and in my opinion the best way to do that would be via UCTA...

I cancelled last month, by phone, they had already offered me 6 months @ £5 if i stayed on, which i did, for 6 months, and then i cancelled.
I was asked why i was cancelling, and i said, 'there was no Spurs matches on it, so no one here watches it any more', she said 'OK' and that was it!
Well it had better be it!

i must be a bit thick, 'cos i still don't understand.

my sky package is totally separate from setanta, which i pay for on a month by month basis by DD. £9.99.
soon after i cancelled my DD to setanta, they stopped broadcasting their programmes to my sky box.
i've been getting setanta for 7/8 months, so the 2 month rule does'nt apply (i'm assuming)
on what grounds can they claim i owe them outstanding monies?
no product, no money.

at the very worse, i would say a tenner is all i would owe them if my cancelation overran into a new month

btw, i've read the contract, and i'm still none the wiser

Did they tell you you had to put it in writing? Unfortunately you will probably find that they will carry on taking the money, as a lot of people have found out!

They class you as in breach of contract as you haven't paid but haven't cancelled so they will 'suspend' the service. you will probably find though that they will argue that the contract keeps running as it hasn't been effectively cancelled so the money will keep acruing. Write and cancel it ASAP and send the letter recorded delivery as it may 'get lost'.

I had similar problems with the "Setanta" company back in the days when NASN was a separate channel. I wanted to cancel NASN and they gave us the run around for months. I can confirm that just canceling DD etc will do no good, canceling over phone or via email too, all no good. Has to be letter and always always always send recorded delivery. As someone else said, letters to Setanta seem to regularly "get lost". They are a joke of a company and the sooner the EPL is back completely with SKY or with some other similar channel, the better.

Took me a total of about 4-5 hours worth of being on hold (not on the same day, over a week period) trying to get hold of this lot to cancel my contract. I phoned the new subscription line to get hole of SOMEONE and they picked up straight away......But they couldn't deal with my cancellation. Eventually got it cancelled but i will never give another penny to sentana sports!!!

From the amount of Spurs games on subs TV over a season, you may as well not bother and use less money to go down the pub and watch with your mates (......or if you have no mates, find a stream!)

I started off with Setanta 18 months back at £14.99 just to watch Serie A. It moved from Bravo to Setanta Sports in january 07. So it moved over mid-season. I signed up on the minimum 12 months contract and then what happens? They move Serie A to channel 5 5 months later. That was the only reason i subscribed in the 1st place. They did show a couple of Spurs games but not enough for £15 per month.

At least they went down to £9.99 per month. But why go back up to £12.99? I wouldn't mind if they sort out a Setanta HD channel for that money. Especially as they now show UFC, which is broadcast in HD in the States. Plus they show some good boxing matches, and theres more Premier League games shown now. Get it all in HD then it might be worth it. However, i still think this should all be covered in the Sky Sports package.

Thank you very much Brussels. Didn't the EU break up Sky's monopoly over Premier League football because according to them it was costing us fans more?

I've already cancelled my Setanta subscription because apart from the Dutch and German leagues, along with NASN I don't watch anything else on it.

If I didn't get Setanta as part of the Virgin XL package I wouldn't have it... have they got any new content on it to justify the extra £3?

They've taken the FA cup games off Sky and they have all the home nations away WC qualifiers. They will also have the UEFA cup in two seasons time. But we'll be in the champion's league by then...

And if you like men fighting, they've got loads of boxing and the UFC.

Although they've got all this, you can go for days/weeks before there's a match you want to see!

Same here mate, never had it before, and wouldn't if it didn't come with my TV package already.
