Just seen the game and I was expecting a cracker. Underwhelming si the word that comes to mind right now. I'm begning to think that if AVB was in charge we'd have the usual moaning but because it's Sherwood there's a whisper of "give him the job". It's nice that he gave Bentaleb a chance but I must have blinked because I missed the amazing performance he supposedly put in. Maybe they'll highlight him on MOTD2 on Monday and I'll have to eat humble pie but right now he didn't stand out and Sherwood isn't some kind of genius and Adebayor still isn't an amazing player. He did well for the second goal but I think the keeper should have saved the first.

On the commentary they mentioned the a second striker was so useful, after the first goal but we'd be just as well off playing an attacking midfielder in support. As long as they pushed forward they would be just as threatening. Imagine Lennon taking up Soldado's position, with his pace any balls into space would be a godsend.

Also I believe AVB's win percentage took into account all those wins against the likes of 'Dynamo Bobbins' in the Europa League

Redknapp had to play those teams and couldn't even get us out of the group stage. Jol and Ramos also had to play those teams, although Jol's record in europe was very good, at least in the first season

A bit harsh maybe, perhaps he'll do well on the continent. The PL wasn't a good fit for him and I hated the way we played under him but I could see him finding success outside the PL.
Agreed, I could see him being very successful in a slower league, the Milan job looks pretty up for grabs at the moment...

His knowledge of so many languages gives him a lot of possibilities.

He's a good manager and an astute tactician, there were just several things about him that highly contradicted with the Spurs style, and he was obviously far too stubborn. Still, he has the Porto campaign on his resume, a bad time at Chelsea, and can point to a record points hall with us and then a decent start to a campaign which was fought on 3 fronts. He's too smart of a guy and he'll succeed somewhere. Just didn't work out for him here like we all thought it would.

Just noticed that Levy in the directors box with Sherwood today but Baldini was. Do we take this to meanthat Levy was in Holland with Van Gaal?

You can't say that. Not a single person wanted to play adebayour last year After 20-30 poor displays.

You can blame alot on avb, but not this.

That being said, let's hope he keep performing like this! Happy times:)

I disagree with everything here apart from the bottom line

Funny really, the way he's viewed by some on here.

I don't profess to know the whole truth with AVB, and whether he was egotistical. What is for certain is that he was a little out of his depth at times. I think he was a good bloke, but had funny ways, which you're bound to pick up working so closely with Mourinho. He ostracised certain players for their attitude and we can't honestly say whether it was deserved or not, as we don't know if they instigated it or whether he was just being obstinate. He stuck rigidly to the notion of a footballing "philosophy" and probably micro-managed too much, afraid to change what isn't working in the vain hope that it will come good.

As much as I think there were egos at Chelsea who chronically fucked him about, and the media were/are quick to jump on him in this country, I don't think it helped him that he repeated a fair few of the mistakes that held him back at Chelsea.

It may have worked out over time, but ours is not the kind of club you can do that with, and our chairman is not the kind of guy who gives people that much time. It's a shame, I really wanted him to succeed (like every Spurs manager!) and I don't bear him any ill will.

Very well said and written, I absolutely agree with this

I did and so I suspect many others. We weren't scoring and we could have done a lot worse than playing Ade. AVB had a personal beef where he isolated Ade to Spurs detrement. So yes I blame AVB (and I can also say so)

I'll give you Bentaleb. But while he wasn't spectacular, he got the job done in a very high pressure debut.

We created a decent pile of chances and *gasp* won the majority of first balls in the second half. I was rubbing my eyes like mad trying to ensure that I was witnessing Spurs players contesting for balls with high energy approach for once this season. So I'm not sure I'd have called us particularly "underwhelming" on the day. Not great, especially the first half, but it was a good win in what will no doubt stand as one of the most vital tests of the year.

I do however, agree with you on having an attacking midfielder vs the striker. The only argument today that could've been made for the purpose in having the additional striker was by holding centrally, he stretched the opposing back line out for some of the through balls to Ade out wide. However, an aware CAM should be doing that anyway, as well as making the cross that Soldado did and making the runs Soldado did that he should have scored on. But if those two continue to build a good relationship, they could help to not only compensate for a CAM's duties, but enhance the team by providing even more chances.

How fit Adebayor is is a testament to the man. To be out in the cold for so long and run like that until the 95th was absolutely mindblowing.

The reason why I thought Bentaleb was spectacular is because at the time, Southampton had been making usually calm-in-posession players shit their pants and make loose touches. He came on and seemed to have so much more space than everyone - that's a sign of a special player in those conditions.

Want to give a quick mention to Lamela's pass in the first half to Soldado where he chipped it into the space ahead of him. Had we of scored from that the pundits would be creaming their y-fronts.

Shows he truly has been putting in the hard work lately and not just yakkin about it. So happy to have him back and doing so well.
