I hate to be a pessimist but I'd say it must be close to 90% that the game is postponed given the state of the High Road. Remember Everton fans will need to get to the game as well and most of those will be coming on coaches.

SS57 - I presume most of the damage on the High Road is towards the south near Lordship Lane with the northern part heading towards the North Circular being ok, is that correct or is it the entire High Road ?

I would imagine it'll get called off. Purely because of policing, the state of High Road and just general safety of the public i guess. They'll be a fair few Everton fans aswell, so they'll need access for coaches etc.

Have any of you thought, if the game is on whether your still gonna go? If it is on im contemplating on the idea of even going, cos i dont wanna be stuck in London with it all kicking off.

I think we're past the worst - if the game goes ahead I will definitely still go. Also there haven't been a large number of civilian casualties as the rioters are now seemingly only interested in looting and giving police the runaround.

Admit though that postponements are looking likely, but as the Premier League's statement and many of the newspapers were printed before the worst of the trouble in Manchester and Birmingham last night, you would imagine their consensus that only the London fixtures are at risk is now completely outdated.

I was starting to get optimistic about the game being on until the worst of the trouble late last night - now I think they may postpone all of the Prem fixtures this weekend, rather than just the 5 or 6 scheduled to take place in the worst effected areas (Spurs v Everton, Fulham v Villa, QPR v Bolton, WBA v Man Utd, Liverpool v Sunderland, Man City v Swansea (? may be ok as not scheduled until Monday))

well the cricket has not been called off in birmingham.

Exactly. I do think some of the reports/commentary on the implications for the football are a little pessimistic. I certainly disagree with the Sun's assertion that the London games are 'almost certain' to be called off.

Today is Wednesday - we are talking about Saturday. Last night order was restored by and large to London's streets and town centres. If order if maintained tonight then there is a definite chance that the police numbers will be reduced from Friday onwards, enabling the police to have 'a break' as one poster suggested was necessary.

I said yesterday that the next 48 hours were pivotal in any decision - the FA and Premier League then released their statement which seemed to say the same thing, and London has since come through the first 24 of those hours in good nick.

Fingers crossed in 24 hours time the streets of London are still intact and the Premier League's statement gives us further cause for optimism.

Think the game will go on as I anticipate all will get done which will satisfy any safety concerns providing nothing major kicks off.

I really really really hope you're right.

The mood of this thread seems to swing from one way to the next - first thins morning there was very little optimism.

Worst damage is from Bruce Grove to Lansdowne Road and Lordship Lane. There are smashed windows as far as Sainsbury's, and there was some looting, such as at Glickman's ironmongers, but nothing torched beyond the Carpetright store and a small terraced building a little way along.

Demolition crews worked round the clock and the Carpetright building was gone by this afternoon. That was the one that posed most danger. However, the cops I spoke to this afternoon (who'd come up for Croydon, which they said had got it even worse) thought it very unlikely the game would go ahead.

I still think the game will go ahead....but I guess police on the scene would have a much better idea.

think the premiership as a whole should start the following weekend instead, think police need to concentrate all efforts elsewhere until this whole thing fully cools off.

i understand that would be extremely difficult though, especially with it being an international championship season

Even if buildings can be made safe (they almost certainly will be) it's going to be tempting fate to switch cops to football duty. Add to that, these guys are whacked. The two I spoke to had had six hours' kip since Sunday, and I doubt they're an exception.

The thing is though, if it had been an evening kick off I would say no chance, but during the day I just cant see trouble erupting like it has...but yeah I guess they'll all be knackered.

yes i agree with this. i can understand calling of night fixtures when tensions and possible problems may happen.

But 3pm start in daylight finish in daylight all people leave in daylight. what it also says to me is that football fans are tarnished with the image of riots and troubles due to past issues.
