Lets see if this gets some more legs. All-in-all seems to be good business.

I also think there is something here for the Japanese market. There is a potential to brand and get there. Granted this is not the primary sport of interest for the Japanese, but it could be a great marketing opportunity.

Been very close for a while just last minute haggling going on so could well be right. It wasn't done as of this morning though.

Would be nice to wrap up the first signing of the season so people (some) can relax a little and see that actually we are a club who will put their hands in the pockets. Obviously with everything that happened with the manager search lots of fans, not even just our own think that we are effectively broke and have zero to spend

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if we were close-ish to a second if the rumoured approach of Paratici is correct.

Always the way. When was the last time a transfer didn't take forever and a day?

So the media reports so far were:

Spurs offer €12m. Bologna want €20m.
Spurs offer €14m + add ons. Bologna want €20m.
Spurs offer €16m. Bologna want €20m.
Spurs offer €18m inc add-ons. Agreement now just €2m apart.
Spurs agree €20m.

I'm assuming that the whole thing was agreed in principle, and they've been battling over structure and adds on.

The potential revenue from the Asian market and specifically Japan is yet to be taken advantage of. Almost a third of the annual £1.2billion of oversea TV rightscomes from ASIA. There’s no coincidence we have AIA as our kit sponsor and I will not be surprised if we go for a big tech or motor company based in Asia as the stadium sponsor or training kit sponsor.
Barcelona receive 47 million a year from Japanese company Rakuten after all.

Although our first priority when purchasing players has to be based on footballing ability, the club undoubtedly assess the economic impact that any new signing may have. Likewise, if we were to sell Kane or Son, the income they generate from sponsors based in the UK and Asia have to be factored in any sale.

I hope we’re signing Takehiro firstly for his footballing ability along with the added bonus of extra income and generation of support from Japanese football fans.

Makes me a little sad as I've always been convinced max Aarons would end up here and if this chap is a right back I guess that's rules it out.

Never seen or heard of him though so fingers crossed.

He is not a specialist right back. He is a CB who 'could' function as a right back

Tbh nobody knows where he is going to play he has played a lot of games as a RB for Bologna majority last season was there and didnt Ally Gold say he was bought as a RB but even he might not be 100% right . Have to see who else we bring in might help us where he might play (y)

Well, as per Transfermarkt...

Tomiyasu as CB :

2020/21 - 18 starts in Serie A
2019/20 - 3 starts in Serie A
2018/19 - 26 starts in Belgian league
2017/18 - 31 starts in Japanese league
2018-21 - 10 starts in Internationals

Tomiyasu as RB :

2020/21 - 14 starts in Serie A
2019/20 - 26 starts in Serie A
2018/19 - 1 starts in Belgian league
2018-21 - 0 starts in Internationals

So, basically, he is a CB for Japan. In serie-A he is primarily more of a RB than CB

I thought positionally ,he is the RB equivalent of Davies. If he plays RB, that allows the LB to push forward on the attack.

I'm a bit wary of having lopsided fullbacks - it didn't exactly work with Jose, did it? If we're buying him to be our starting RB, I'm slightly hesitant.

Would rather have 2 who are both equally good going forward as it makes it harder to defend against. But suppose we will have to see how Nuno sets the team up.

Like the look of him and like these sorts of signings but still not quite sure why we're going for him as a RB if we don't intend to play a back three. Really not a fan of the lopsided formation thing and don't think he's capable as a pure RB bombing up and down the wing.

Will be interesting to see where/if we play him if this goes through.

I had watched some more videos of Bologna game highlights from last season and wanted to see how he does in CB vs RB
  1. First of, Bologna has shambles of a back line. They are all over the place in most games.
  2. It is difficult to judge him given above. His side quality is so poor, its hard to say how good or bad he is at CB. Whenever Bologna plays big teams, they are stretched all over the park - so there are so many gaps in front of back4. Because they are so stretched, backline never stays in line. Roma beat them 5-1 and Inter 3-1 - he made couple of mistakes but rest of them by his CB partner.
  3. Against physical no9 like Dzeko & Lukaku, I found him getting bullied as CB. Lukaku throws him down like a rag doll for his Inter goal. For me, thats a foul. But point is, he has to improve a lot against physical strikers.
At RB , he seems far more at ease.
Its very much possible, that he is more exposed at Bologna as CB and lack of organisation.

I would certainly only play him as RB or RCB with a another senior partner. I am sure, Nuno side would be far more organised and drilled. If Nuno can make Doherty a top class RB for 2 seasons in PL...pretty sure, Tomiyasu will be a star. But I dont think he can do it in all position yet...

Italy literally just won the Euros with lopsided fullbacks :)

No he's definitely a RB, he's just naturally quite a defensive one, although he is adept pushing forward.

To compare with other Spurs players, think, Paul Stalteri.

If the plan is to play 3 CB's then it works to play players like Davies and Tommy either side of a more commanding bully type CB imo, especially if you want your full backs advanced.
