I think Wimmer has looked good but would assume that being a leftie like Jan they are both vying for the LCB berth and Alderweireld, Fazio and Dier (rather in goal than CM) are competing for the Right centre back position.

Impressed by Winks, and would like to see him and/or Carroll on the bench to offer something different in midfield, Carroll just has something that suits a passing side that most if not all of our other MF's are lacking; vision, a clever range of passing and the ability to have in his mind his next pass before he's received the ball (if Dembele had those attributes he would be at Real)

Hope we play with a fluid three like today as it notably improves our forward play.

I would assume the team will be

---------------------Lloris

Walker-------Toby----------Jan--------Rose

--Dembele------Bentaleb------Mason

----Chadli --------------- Eriksen

------------------Kane

With the midfield 3 and Attacking 3 all interchanging when we attack and rotating to create space. and falling back into the position they are in defensively when moves break down. Would certainly offer us more creativity but needs a lot of awareness and discipline on the defensive side.

Subs: Ali, Trippier, Wimmer, Vorm, Lamela, Carroll, Winks

We played 4231.
Not so sure about that.

At times it looked 4-4-2 especially when defending and when going forward it looked like 3 and 3 to me, especially when Mason, Winks and Ali were in there. but there was a lot of rotation between the front and midfield, so I can see why you got confused

Can't be bothered to type it out again...
No, it's still 4231. The front 4 were just rotating properly like they should and mucking in defensively like they should today.

We'll see more proper rotation through positions now as poch's system is soaking in properly.

The flexibility of 4231 gives you the ability to modulate through different shapes in-game. 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 should always be the defensive shape but that hasn't happened as our wing forwards haven't tracked back properly. That will have to change this season.

Seriously, will it make any difference? Can't shake the feeling that come Saturday night, Sky will be having a complete wankfest over United and how they're gonna win the League.

Alli and Trippier have to start and I expect them both to. It's a good game to get out of the way early and I can see us going up there, giving it a go and picking something up.

Vorm
Trippier Toby Jan Rose
Bentaleb Alli
Lamela Eriksen Chadli
Kane

I think Vorm was solid enough when he played against Real, and experienced too. I don't think we must play Hugo as he seems needs a bit longer treatment/training for his injured wrist. And i think Trippier a bit more solid than Walker, IMO.

Subs: Hugo, Wimmer, Mason, Dembele, Onomah, Dier, Carrol

This is the team I would like to see:
Lloris
Trippier Toby Winner Rose
Dembele Carol Alli
Lamela Eriksen
Kane

That's a safe defence and very talented going forward however Poch will play safe and go for what he knows plus some players haven't had much of a pre-season. He won't want to risk 4/5 new players though that will be Manu's problem.

Vorm
Walker Toby Jan Rose
Dier Bentaleb
Dembele
Chadli Eriksen
Kane

I think Manu won't be very fluid and the goalkeeper should be vulnerable - though there is a lot of talent in that squad. Dembele must play due to his great performances against Manu.

I think if the team was picked purely on preseason form, then we should see, and I would like to see the following:

Lloris
Trippier - Alderweireld - Vertonghen - Rose
Alli - Bentaleb
Dembele - Carroll - Chadli
Kane

However, I think it's likely that it will be Walker in place of Trippier and Eriksen instead of Carroll from that side.

I like the idea but I really think we should pick Eriksen, poor pre-season form yes but he'll mentally shift into a higher gear when it's proper competitive football.

I agree otherwise, both with Trippier's selection and the unfortunate likelihood that it will be Walker instead, but if Lloris isn't fully fit I don't think we should risk him. I doubt there's any way that a broken wrist can be aggravated when it is essentially healed, but if it's at the back of his mind it could affect him.

Lloris
Tripper - Dier - Vertonghen - Rose
Ali - Bentelab - Dembele
Lamela/Chadli - Kane - Eriksen

or pochs version

Lloris
Tripper - Dier - Vertonghen - Rose
Ali - Bentelab
Lamela/Chadli - Dembele - Eriksen
Kane

Mason could also push for a start depending on fitness

If Walker starts ahead of Trippier, I will lose it.

Basically Walker is going to start ahead of Trippier. Especially as Walker actually played well against Real. I agree with you though, I'd much prefer to see Trippier given the nod.

He doesn't track back leaves the FB on his tod.

Mostly he does, every so often though he doesn't. For me it's about whether those occasions lead us to concede more goals than the one's he scores the other end? And whether an alternative player's failure to score at that same rate versus the small amount of additional defensive cover he might provide.

Anyway, whatever we think, Chadli's nailed on starter imo.

Of the uncertainties, I think it will be Lloris in goal. Walker ahead of Dier. A Bentaleb/Ali double pivot. Dembele before Lamela. So:

Lloris
Walker TA JV Rose
Bentaleb Ali
Dembele Eriksen Chadli
Kane

Really want Trippier to start but Poch is going to go with Walker I would say, bound to do something daft aswell. Dembele tends to play well against Utd so would have him in there from the start aswell.

I'm hoping Dembele plays a deeper role and we play more of a tight three man central midfield as otherwise, I fear we could get the run around in the middle of the park if it's Bentaleb and Alli/Mason.

Dembele has played exclusively in the front three for Poch in pre-season, and we always play a 4-2-3-1.
