Once upon a time, under the stewardship of Louis Van Gaal, Ajax won the European Cup by playing with this side:

van der Sar
Reiziger........ Blind .....F.De Boer
Rijkaard
Seedorf Davids
Litmanen
F.George.... R.De Boer.... Overmars

I say it is time to try the ultimate:

Gomes
Walker....... Bassong .......Ekotto
Kaboul
Modric Livermore
Gudjohnsen
Bentley...... Defoe........ Bale

Palacios will play. Even if one leg was hanging off, that boy would declare himself fit.

Crouch definitely needs to play, he will be needed for his defence against set pieces.

This is a testing time, but if we pull off 4th place at the end of the season, things like this will make it all the greater achievement.

Frank De Bouer as a central foward?

That Van Gaal chap has always been an odd one. ;-)

Gomes
Walker Kaboul Bassong BAE
Bentley Modric Gudjohnsen Krancjar
Crouch Pav

Subs: Alnwick, Dervitte, Defoe, Livermore, Rose, Townsend, and one other?

So you would completely leave out Bale from the equation alltogether  Can you tell me why?

How we miss O'Hara now. Could be Elvis' team above possibly with BAE in and Bale in for Kranky. We'll have to outscore them it seems.

See, I'm the other way around. Modric against a physical midfield who aren't that great at keeping possession, that's when I think he's at his most dangerous as a central player because he's got the ability to play around and in between them. Modric in the middle against a side like Fulham who keep possession well didn't work so well because they are the sort of midfield against which we need someone who can make a strong tackle.

Basically, I have no issue at all with Modric on the ball in the centre, but off the ball he does admittedly leave us a touch easy to get through. Sunderland, like Stoke before, do not play through the midfield that much, so off the ball deficiencies of Luka are less of an issue, but when we're in possession I reckon his brand of skill and passing is just the ticket to unlock them.

See BBLG, I think you sum it up pretty well...the first point is a counterpoise to the second. What tilts the balance for me is that I would be really, really frightened that someone like Catterwaul is gonna put a 'reducer' :)rofl:) in on him, and we will be FCUKed:cry:

I blame Booney for creating the thread about the Goon's injury woes.

He's cursed us all.

Let's lynch the witch!!!

i know we are kinda foooked.but all is not lost.

we have to dig deep and play players out of position..but i think the key is to play as many in there positions as possible.

In all honesty, with 3 first choice central midfielders and 3 first choice centre backs out, not to mention the first choice right back, now it's time, if ever there was one, to just put the available players all in their best positions (barring Modric because at least Kranjcar is good back up and Modric is capable in the middle) and fill in the holes with youngsters who actually play those postiongs, who are deserving, rather than shaft the likes of Ekotto or Gudjohnsen into positions that they are not specialist in.

Gomes
Walker Kaboul Bassong Bale
Bentley Livermore Modric Kranjcar
Defoe Pavlyuchenko
Kaboul and Bassong, though we have our issues over each of them, are both fast, strong, talented centre backs who are strong in the air and on the ground. As a unit we might be a bit worried, but as individuals they are both good players.

Gareth Bale, no worries about. Best left back going at the moment anyway.

Walker had a good debut, albeit against total dross, and can hopefully build on that. He's quick, a good height, and loves to overlap.

Kranjcar has been frustrating lately, but he has given us some magnificant performances from the left this season and has also scored in our last two games, so is hopefully confident.

Bentley is rejuvenated this season, and while he doesn't have the skill, pace and drive of Lennon, he is a player who Sunderland, for instance, would probably kill to have in their side, and I reckon at the moment we don't need to worry about him.

Modric is not everybodies cup of tea in the middle, and we most certainly lose some solidity with him there, but there is a pls point in his ability to drag the ball, and with it the team, from defence to attack when he plays in this position.

These are my preferred strikers, but we could have any of the four and still have a good strikeforce. We need not worry about this area.

Livermore is an unknown quantity, moreso than any other player in the side. I have confidence in him though, I've seen plenty of him at our youth and development levels and he is a strong, tall boy with a tough tackle and a lot of energy. He is also pretty decent on the ball, able to hit a long pass or take the ball past someone in similar fashion to Palacios (though obviously I've not seen this tested against top class opposition yet, only at kidlet levels). He's not the slowest either and if he keeps his head he may well give us a good debut.

I'm confident again.
