Agreed. In fact would be surprised if any of the 3 start (Sandro,Paulinho,Vertonghen)

Vertonghen I reckon might, he's such an obvious upgrade on either CB. Paulinho might but he's not, IMO, the same level of quality increase over Dembele or Bentaleb (on the form he's on).

IMO, the most impressive performance I have seen against Manchester City and their 442 setup was Southampton. I would very much expect us to setup the same way. Their only mistake was holding their line too high, and they got roasted 1 time, and that was all it took. Setup the same as them, with a deeper line, and I think we have a very good chance.

tactics:
Wingers are defensive (why Chadli is there), they drop deep to force city into the middle
Defense is slightly deep, to avoid getting beat with through balls
Attack through the middle
Adebayor drops deep during play, pulls space for Lennon and Chadli to exploit.
One of our midfielders is ALWAYS no further up than the midfield circle

That's my plan to beat city. Unfortunately, I don't think Sandro will be 100% fit, as he has seemingly struggled with fitness all year. If he is fit, I would plug him into Paulinho's spot. If TS rates Capoue, I would do the same.

Hard to know what team to play but it would be a mistake to rush players back when others had performed to the best of their ability. It might be better to go with form, nurse players back and just put this down as a game we will be shocked to get anything from

I personally think that 5 of our front 6 pick themselves as we've been winning consistently in the league with then. Back four depends on which centre backs are available I guess but I think it unlikely that either Vertonghen or Kaboul will be thrown back in to a game of this magnitude after missing for a while. But Bentaleb, Dembele, Lennon, Eriksen and Adebayor shuld all start. They're currently familiar with eachother, confident and deserving to play based on their form.

The remaining slot is between so many players it's silly.

Do you rush back either Paulinho or Sandro to give our midfield an in theory competitive edge, but in turn (especially if Sandro) playing our most defensive line up yet under Sherwood so potentially losing some cutting edge?

Do you put Soldado back in and effectivfely play a bastardised 442 with Eriksen tucking in from the left, giving us more options going forward but also leaving us slightly thin against a truly dominating midfield which contains arguably the worlds best midfielder in Toure?

Do you go with a winger/ Attacking Midfielder in one of Chadli/ Sigurdsson/ Townsend (not Lamela, he's still injured), giving us protection for Rose ( our weakest player in my opinion), not having particularly less attacking impetus than if Soldado were in the side, and allowing Eriksen to tuck in and make a midfield three with Dembele and Bentaleb, thus not having particularly less solidity than if one of Sandro or Paulinho were thrown in, but at the same time choosing this player from the group who have been our least impressive in attack so far this season in Chadli, Sigurdsson and Townsend?

My feeling is that it will be the latter option, perhaps with the caveat that either Paulinho or Sandro will replace Bentaleb (I doubt it though), and that the player of choice will be Chadli. It provides the best balance between attack and defence at this moment (though a fit Paulinho and fir Sandro of course do affect this thinking longer term.

What I absolutely don't want to see is a midfield three of Dembele, Bentaleb and one of Sandro/ Paulinho, with an attacking three of Adebayor, Lennon and Eriksen. If we do this we'll end up with the front three spending most of the match wondering why they're not getting any of the ball, Eriksen will have a third of the touches he's been having lately (Lennon about a tenth) and Adebayor will look out of sorts because he'll be having to do the work of two players all game.

Don't really agree with your last paragraph. If Sandro or Paulinho are deemed fit enough to start they absolutely should be IMO. No idea why you would think the advanced three wouldn't see as much as ball - as it would make us more competitive competing for the ball.

For me its not just about the players you pick in terms of how your game plan pans out - its the mind set and instructions you send them out with.

Myself and a friend had the privilege of visiting the training ground today and watching the first team train. Before the training match started Steffen Freund showed us the list of 1st team players who were taking part in an 8 vs 8 training match, interestingly there were also names of players in orange (Verthongen/Kaboul/Sandro) who didn't take part but were still doing some sort of light training and players in red who were not training at all (Townsend/Lamela/Kane/Sigurdsson/Holtby). I wouldn't expect any of the players that were listed in red to make the bench vs city.

We had the opportunity to visit because one of the prizes on the spurs credit card is to watch the 1st team train.

Based on that I'd expect us to line up with the same team that played Swansea with Sandro possibly thrown in there.

Personally I hope this is our team. With the strength in the middle we should be able to withstand most of City's pressure. With Eriksen out in the wing he can drop into the middle and add an extra body to help the midfield. Ade would have to do a lot up on his own but isn't as if he hasn't done it before. Setting up very negatively I know but a draw at home to City is a good result.
