And the answer is almost certainly Haseeb Hameed. Out of all the openers England have tried he'd been by far and away the outstanding candidate. In his very brief test career he showed composure, stickability and guts (when he batted 50-odd overs to get a draw with a broken finger). He's seriously struggling with his game though but still only 22 and if he finds any sort of form in the first class game again I would be shocked if he wasn't put straight back in the side.

Opening the batting in a one day game is very different to opening the batting in a test match plus one day cricket and test cricket are very different now. Doing well in the one day team doesn't mean you do well in the test side as has been shown today.

equally, doing well in the one day team doesn’t mean you won’t do well in the test team.

opening the batting, in any format, is difficult. but if you are an opener in one format, you have a much better chance at succeeding at it in another format.

anywhere, going round in circles here.

i think he should, and will, be given a chance. I just hope he gets the same chance Jennings has had.

if i was an aussie bowler rocking up for the first ashes test, i know who i’d rather see walking out to open.

Hales was cack and couldn't play the moving ball iirc. I remember even in the innings he was scoring runs he had so much luck and multiple lives (and still couldn't get through to centuries and beyond). Then he decided to jack in red ball cricket for a bit so gave the impression he didn't want to be selected (not that that did Rashid any harm, admittedly...)

From what I understand, the new selectors are of the opinion that Jennings has the most talent and is the best opener in England and they need persist with him as he will come good at some point.

Which, if true, and there is no one better we may as well pack up and stop playing test cricket right now.
Hales fell out with the board I think. IIRC he refused to go to somewhere, Pakistan(?) due to security concerns and the board said fine, we weren't going to pick you anyway, but like you say........Rashid.

Jason Holder 200 odd not out and Royston Chase 8-60. You’d have got some odds on that that the start.

Shamefully bad from England. They couldn’t give a shite either, they will be out on the golf course tomorrow

Well currently none of the England players in that mould are making good test players, so forgive me for betting against it..........

Cc. @Archibald&Crooks , @class of 62

Edit: He's always batted middle order for Surrey in first class, hasn't he? If his county doesn't trust him to open...

he batted at 3 when he played last season and did very well. Surrey were blessed at the top of the order as they had Burns, Stoneman and Elgar.

Forgot about that, yes he was on very shaky ground due to his performances and refusing to tour was the final nail in the coffin. Around that time he then definitely gave up playing red ball cricket for Notts as well which suggested he wasn't bothered.

Re. Hameed, I said at the time they should have got him straight back in the team after his promising debut and ignored the few bad games for Lancs. At this point though they cant really select him, apparently a large part of his slump is everyone having an opinion on his game and how to improve it, his mind got a bit scrambled from it all, and he's struggling to get back to form. Not like we haven't seen that one before.....

Hameed looked great in India(?). thought he was the real deal.

hasn’t been the same since his thumb injury. seems to have lost all confidence, not sure if the thumb injury has hampered his technique.

hope he comes again, looked like he had good technique and mentality.

Joe Root's quotes this morning read like an Ostrich is captaining the team. I can understand some of what he's saying but to say the bowler selection had nothing to do with it is just plain wrong. Yes, it didn't have a bearing on the collapse but it certainly had a bearing on the Windies racking up so many runs. On going a complete day without them losing a fucking wicket. He should have at least admitted they got that wrong, instead he's coming across like a buffoon.

Tosser. Get another captain in. Buttler will do for now.

Yes, I love Buttler :D

"It's easy to select the team in hindsight" I think he said yesterday, despite everybody saying he probably/definitely got it wrong before the first ball of day 1

Cannot make my mind up re Root and the captaincy

Anyone that has done it for any length of time knows what a lonely job it can be and you only get better with experience

Just when you think he’s got something and has a good match as skipper he has an absolute stinker

Not sure what % of input he has on the XI that takes the field but to read that pitch (when you take into consideration all the history and evidence at the Kensington Oval) so badly and drop a tall hit the wicket bowler with well over 400 wickets is some call!!!

He also puts himself in shit positions in the field for a skipper and bowls himself too much considering he has back issues and needs to concentrate on his batting. (The team desperately need his runs)

Didn’t see the post match press conference s but get the gist as per usual of a degree of delusion

He got the job with zero experience and experience is the No1 thing you need. Add that to the fact that he is a baby and still looks like one

Needs more time. Just not sure exactly how much....

I do like a left hand right hand opening batting partnership so that's good

Jennings clearly wasn't/Isn't the answer. Lets hope Denly has more about him

If they pick the right XI for this pitch it should be 1-1.
