Surly the aim is to pay your current team/squad what they are worth, which lessens the risk of pissing them off as and when the marquee signings are made on fat contracts.

I think it works both ways really. There might be contract offers on the table already, and if the players are happy to sign immediately thats great, and if not, the contract offers will stay on the table until we have done our business. Contracts not being signed might lead to a sale of certain players, as we should expect with Toby.

I agree with what you're saying. The problem I have is that isn't this a similar situation to when we qualified for the CL under Redknapp? I know the TV revenue wasn't as big then, but on the flip side we didn't have the stadium to pay for.

As ever, it's encouraging, but I'll believe it when I see it.
no for all the reasons you say plus 3 years of good stable results from Poch and the team

Thats great, if not overwhelming news. Hopefully he'll be given more of a role next season, or at least a good loan. Impressive again yesterday, and seemed to lift Roses game as well, that our RB could also threaten on pace.

I really like the ITK about Poch wanting to take risks and shake things up, that's exactly what we need. The current squad have shown that, while they're a really, really good team, they've probably reached their ceiling and we need a little bit extra to take us over the line. If we spend big and spend well, bringing in the right players and selling those who are no longer required, I think we would be favourites alongside City next season. Bring on the summer.

We're not going to be spending much this summer - Paul Merson told us all.

"£5m-£6m 'gems'..." is apparently our MO what with us having to sell Harry Kane to finance the stadium.....

Bless him. He doesn't even know which way is up.

This was in the Standard:

Kyle Walker-Peters, the right-back who made his second League start of the campaign against Leicester, has signed a new contract with Spurs until 2021.

so, maybe already leaked to the press

We'll have to wait and see whether the club will be busy early on but the ITKs certainly are. Thanks for all the info! (y)

Given the fact we are about to move into a most amazing new stadium, one of the best in the world, we will give it and its investment the respect it deserves and that is by ensuring we have the best team possible within our operating ability to put out.

The other thing of course when we find and buy players like JV, TA, CE, DA, should we insist we pay more? Spurs continue to prove that its not about spending big money on players and Poch would agree. Further Levy has proved he will spend money. 42m on a 21 year old is hardly being a tight ****....

All roads lead back to the performance on the pitch, that can make you or break you.....

Agree but there's always extra costs because they're more likely to go wrong and there's always a few Fazios, N'Jies, Janssens, etc.

We'd be mad to jack in the approach that has got us so far but we do need to add to it now we've established ourselves as a top side. If we could get in one top, established player I'd be happy for us to continue speculating at a more modest level(fee/wages-wise) for any of our other business.

Anyway, so long as new contracts are signed I'm going to be pretty happy regardless.

(btw, who is DA?)

Edit: Cheers, lads. It's probably Alli as you say.

It's time for Levy and Lewis to shit (Not a spelling mistake) or twist, been told similar to Hercules, contracts first then signings. Lists of "Not wanted " and wanted already given
Are you as positive as Hercs that they're gonna fully deliver, Foxy?

Also, if shinehead isn't allowed his playtime in the window, I doubt he'll be able to get out of bed for a whole year.

He lives for it.

Great news about kwp.

Also great that funds are there for poch but I hope we don't completely ditch the recruitment principles that got us here.

Buying young players that Poch can mould is why we're as good as we are. Buying established stars could be seriously detrimental to the ethos of the team.

I'd prefer us to be looking players below the age of 25 and create competition rather than older stars who might 'coach' our youngsters. E.g. rather Madison than Modric. Or Sessegnon rather than Bale.

I also think we've been good at trying to buy what we actually need, even if it hasn't worked out (sissoko).

Our core team is very good so we just need competitive options rather than major surgery. A lb with pace to play as a wingback, a second striker.

The only exception to this is in central midfield where a major player is needed. Again someone like Madison provides competition but a top class cm is needed to control games but again, not so old that they can't cope with both learning and executing the press. Jorginho would be ideal.

Apart from that I don't think we need a big name.

I wonder whether Poch is referring to the club not taking punts on people, eg Mane. Despite the media spin, he did tell people not to take it negatively and also that we weren't going to spend crazy money. I think he may want us to take the risk of keeping Toby and losing out on money; he may even want us to sell a prized asset in order to finance the rest of the squad. We all know that we have been very close, but have been hampered by external factors. I get the feeling that next season, if he stays, he wants to have a good tilt at the Champions League even if it means dropping out of the top four, and the following season to go for the league.

Assuming KWP has been extended to be a contender for the squad (I think it's time) and not a PL loan, that's one less position for the 'In' list.

Let's hope this is the first of many over the next couple of weeks.

What makes me moderately confidence despite all the cycles (in terms of transfer windows - not the vast improvement we have still managed to deliver) of whispered promises vs. very underwhelming reality is Poch playing his hand strongly from the front this time - the first time I believe he has done this and from Levy's perspective if he really is a shrewd businessman then he will concur that sometimes you need to speculate to accumulate and with all of the infrastructure in place, great TV revenue + CL guarantedd again, a fantastic nearly there squad assembled on the relative cheap and the best manager we have had in generations - if not now then it will clearly be never - the fans will see through that relatively swiftly and he may quickly be left with a half filled white elephant at the current ticket prices. Think Poch using the media in this way is pretty clever personally as he is making it clear his demands are not unreasonable vs. our supposed rivals and there is no reason for us not to be fighting on the same playing field now ex Manc clubs

In fact is Levy doesnt back him this summer hes not a shrewd businessman at at all and just a bean counter and it will be clear it is him and not Poch that has taken as far as they can

Agree with every word of that. What worries me is whether Levy and/or Lewis look upon Poch's public statements as holding them to ransom and we have no idea how they will react to that!
