It's funny, when the likes of benteke, bony or lukaku have storming seasons this forum is filled with comments saying we should be on the lookout for players of similar ilk, and we need to get them before they go to a bigger club. And here we are linked with that exact player, yet people don't want him. I give up...
I think he'd be perfect for us tbh.

How?

Last summer Baldini oversaw deals for:

Soldado - a proven goal scorer who had only been outscored by Messi and Ronaldo in the last 3 years.

Lamela - one of the most sought after young players in World football, and the guy touted to take over St.Totti's position at Roma.

Eriksen - another highly sought after young player.

Chirches - an international CB being considered by a number of clubs.

Paulinho - an international midfielder who was one of the stars of the confederations cup, being voted the third best player of the tournament.

Capoue - a French international DM to provide cover for Sandro.

Chadli - a Belgium international who was keeping Dembele out of the international side and churning out good performances in the erdevise for years.

Regardless of their relative successes, let's not rewrite history and act like he did a terrible job.
Gawd, welcome to THFC, please take two steps back and watch your career spiral down the pan. ;)

Well in some ways a very similar player without the premium that one seasons good PL goal tally adds. I think the likes of players you mentioned have strengths we can use but I think our main first choice striker needs to be more skilful, have more vision and guile and as such the premium price should go on that type of player.

This lad would give us the opportunity to have a second striker with other qualities at a lower price and one that maybe can become a first choice in the future or who's abilities and strengths may make him a better first choice against certain opposition

I think some people are tending to overlook the return of Ian Broomfield, I'm sure he didn't return to have no significant voice in transfers. I actually think he is here to bolster the quality of our recruitment and the debate in the transfer committee. If Baldini and Broomfield respect each other and can work together that should boost our targeting of potentially quality players

Baldini will more than likely have had a say in the return of Broomfield

Eh, that depends on a lot of things, most notably what style of play we are planning to use going forward. Remember that Soldado was one of the better strikers in the world before we fucked him up last year, if the new manager rates him then I think its decent. I'd say those three are a good sight better than Giroud, Bendtner and Sanogo, but that strike force finished exactly where we want to be.

Very true and we shouldn't lose sight of the possibility that Lamela finds his form and can boost our goal tally plus we may add a left winger who can also score a bit

You can question Baldini's ability in identifying players but last summer he really did manage to get deals sewn up when we often would have haggled until the deadline had passed. If Broomfield can identify the best targets and Baldini can consult and negotiate then I'm all for it. It may reduce his importance as DoF but I'm much more concerned with success than structure.

Really excited about the prospect of signing one of Europe's most promising young strikers.

Even better news will be Freund staying ... love the guy and his enthusiasm.

so do I.. and it's about time we were first to a player, not buying them a year or so later for twice the price. Signings are a risk, but at 20 and a Belgian international there are promising signs. A proper coach can develop players like this.

Are we still talking about Batshauyi? In which case then yes assuming it was from the 'development pot' (that was mentioned when we bought Walker and Naughton despite having 15 RBs) rather than the main transfer kitty.
No, I was talking about a 1st team player signed for £8-9m without consulting (or even having) a manager.

I think Baldini did an excellent job last summer, if Levy had been doing the negotiations we'd still be having discussions with 5 of the players their agents and clubs I guess. I was very happy with the signings of Soldado, Lamela, Capoue, Paulinho and Eriksen even if we haven't seen the best of them yet, the other two imo were never bought as first teamers anyway but as cover players we hoped might develop and maybe given enough time they will

I think we do fine in this regard, that's why we make healthy transfer profits.

Remember we only hear about the good ones there are plenty of misses

I had Palacios in mind. Wigan took the chance on him after other clubs took him on trial and rejected him, then Spurs signed him.

Whenever I see people talk about 'proven' players it makes me cringe. Played in the league doesn't automatically mean proven.

The realistic hope and expectation has to be that all the signings we made last summer will really pay dividends in the coming season. Players like Soldado will start regularly finishing moves, Paulinho will be used effectively to give us that Lampard-esque player who picks up goals from late runs, Lamela will give us a good option as a wide forward and Eriksen will go from strength to strength.

This summer I'm certain that the main aim has to be trimming the squad, strengthening a couple of weak areas such as LB, and then keeping the squad together for a new man to come in and impose a better play style upon.

Do you not think it's worrying that he didn't identify that some of them wouldn't settle into the Premier League? Think that's probably within the remits of his job. I do agree on the negotiations front and that he doesn't deserve as much stick as he's got but I do also think it's hard to say he's done a good job also. One player of seven who has been really successful, two who have been proper flops so far and the jury majorly out on three of the other four. Assuming it's at least partly his job to identify players and not just to negotiate that isn't good. He should have recognised that we needed a bit more Premier League experience and bought appropriately.
