This 110%. It's frankly embarrassing when listening to Spurs fan's whine and moan about 'getting players in' 'sign them early' 'just pay them what they want' when they can't grasp the fundamentals. Do people honestly think that given the choice between getting players into the squad early or leaving it till last minute is a concious decision to save 'a few quid'. It's not just the initial outlay it's 101 other knock on factors to consider.

In our eyes we are a big club, in reality we are a big club. Just not as big as others.

its all about the targeting of the right players ..... I dont think we have lost a player early in the window to one of the five clubs above or around us or further afield in Europe. Ings never wanted to leave the the north west where he was settled and Schneiderlin to Man U was not done early and was more about the CL football on offer and the stature of the club.
The players we have apparently lost out on early in the window was due to them deciding to stay with their 'non big' clubs
because primarily we weren't prepared to complete with them on wages.
Wages are of course a factor but if you target the right players you can get deals done early.

I wish people would listen to the part about getting in players early and how the big teams do it.

Interesting news re: the yoofs. Would be very interesting to see someone like Onomah step up in the first few games.

As for Mason, I simply don't think he's cut out to play in a midfield 2 so I'm not sure where that leaves him.

Mason and his team finished fifth in the PL with him playing in a two man midfield.

This.

I feel as if some people think we scraped through a relegation fight last year. We've got the basis of a lot of tools we need already, just need to tweak and refine it all - hence the unsurprising confidence in trying more youngsters.

Whilst I fully agree and appreciate this, I don't think this would fully apply to this summer.

For example we are undergoing a squad reduction and significant wages reduction and are only looking at 2-3 more in at this point (and the previous ones were probably worked on since the season ended). If we were trying to fill our squad with numerous new players then I would be all for trying to squeeze every penny out of the deals.

Berahino and McCarthy are unlikely to be on large wages (we know Berahino is on £15k) so we are unlikely to trouble anyone's contracts with their signings. They also seem very keen and Berahino has zero issues with resale value. If the players are expecting top wages then by all means take your time negotiating. We were never paying Schneiderlin the £100k plus Utd ended up offering, I wouldn't want us to.

That leaves the fees. Now I'm not suggesting we slap £25M straight cash on the table for both but I'd hope we don't drag them out over the next 4-5 weeks. If we can use a bit of the spare cash to grease the wheels and get them in by 8th August we should do it (We'd only probably be looking at a £10-15m net spend even in the worst case). That said I'm quite confident Levy will get 1 or 2 of these in before then against my better judgement.

I like the youth info, would be great to see Onomah, Pritchard and Alli break through like the other lads last year.

When I read some comments about Mason I realize how little some of our fans know about football. Unfortunately for him he has missed a lot of pre-season work, but he has the ability to have a big impact.

Yes you can - such as the 3 we completed early. However just because Athletico / Burnley / Cologne we were able to reach an agreement with doesn't necessarily mean WBA / Everton / Leverkeusen / Stuttgart or whoever we are speaking to re our next targets will roll over. I dare say Alderweirald, Wimmer and Trippier were not in their clubs long term plans - another contributing factor - whereas Kramer / McCarthy / Werner / Berahino are clearly more important to their respective clubs.

There are very few players that will come into our club and improve us that are 'attainable' and even less that their current club would be happy to sell without squeezing as much out of us as possible / lining up their own replacements. We can't just slap down another £5-10m in fee's and 25% more in wages to get the deal over the line quicker. That's what Leeds did. Look at them now.

That club that Berahino plays for have just put up a rather amusing bird noise on that social networking thing that A&C hates essentially refuting any bid has been made for the afore mentioned player.

I think the issue with Berahino and McCarthy is that neither have been our first choice so the delay is in waiting to see what is happening with our other options.

And the transfer fees will take time on both deals I'm sure, and whatever our hopes Levy will never be the sort of chairman who pays an extra 1-2m just to make things happen quickly.

£10 donated. This site keeps me sane. (although watching the bipolar reactions to even the smallest tidbit, does make me wonder) Loving the philosophy this window slowly coming to fruition. Deadwood gone/going. Defence upgraded and ITK linking us with a DM, WF and striker. If Carlsberg made transfer windows

a bit more from jasper: Pritch 'should' be back by next week training, though he is on a personal training programme already. Should know end of week. Mason caution but same, will know more and hope it is not a recurrence. If so a little while but cannot be clear yet but highly doubtful as they are being very careful with him. Expected to be in contention next week is the aim and why they are being very careful.

Lamela is going nowhere from what I heard.

To be fair I think I'm getting my hopes up after the (hopefully not coincidental) change in tact over outgoings this season. I do think Berahino will be done within the fortnight, whether he joins or not. Not sure whether Berahino was down the list or just, like Toby and McCarthy became available again after circumstances changed. After Martial not really any other 'higher' targets came out in the open, although that could just be the club plugging leaks efficiently.
