I've often wondered if the mentality would be different in younger players if there was an international salary cap. Say start at 5k for when they progress into the first team and are 19 or younger. As they age another year, increase the salary by another 2k, until they reach 23 or 24. Then they can earn what they like. This way young players are firmly focused on their development and not any other distractions. Players don't earn too much before they've earnt it and can't hold a club at ransom.

Having said that, bentaleb may not have even approached the situation in an overly demanding manner. Let's see what happens.

Citeh would pay him more than that to be a squad player.
yeah well if he wants to make money and never see the light of day off the bench at city, hes welcome too, but for now and his ability, starting at spurs is best for him, idk what he makes now, but its probably lower than it should be, but no way he makes 80k or anywhere near it

80k is way too gernerous, bentaleb doesnt walk into the first team of anyone above us, kid needs to settle

Walks into ours though, posters on here consider us better than the Everton s, villas and soton s, then surely our wages should reflect that?

Not a great situation for us tbh

I'm just saying that the wages have become hugely inflated and we're not really competitive at the top level.

To be honest 80k is f-all for young top 4 type players. Bentaleb is clearly in that type of talent bracket so I don't blame him for asking.

Would he get into any of the current top 4 teams? As if

He is in our team this season because Levy was too tight to bring in a top 4-5 standard playmaker, he is good, but overhyped by some imho

Our wages don't need to reflect nor cement the fact that we are better than those teams.

trix: Just spoke to my mate about all things transfer window and he said something I found very interesting. He was with a very well known agent with plenty of Prem players on his books(and some abroad) yesterday and he told him that any of his players that were attracting Premier league attention were being advised to do nothing at all until the summer, when the new TV deal comes in and wage budgets increase.

Could this be related to the wage negotiation that is going on in regards to Bentaleb?

He has great potential and could become a top 4 player, potentially.

He isn't one at the moment though and he certainly isn't in the top 1 or 2 brackets of midfielders in the league.

Needs to settle down and continue to progress and his salary will progress with his ability and achievements.

it's how the games gone but no regular for a top 4 team will be on as "little" as 80k/week. With the new TV deal coming in it wont be lomg before we are regularly paying over 100k to payers.

Bentaleb isn't a regular for a top 4 team. He may well get there but not yet. £40k a week sounds fair. If he does well next season then we offer him a new contract. It was good enough for Bale it can be good enough for him.

Yes but I'll say again, when the likes of Dembele, Capoue and Paulinho have been on 50-60k and he's kept them out of the team then I don't really see how people can argue that he doesn't deserve parity as a matter of fairness. And that's before you have the argument that if he's a more established player in the team then add a bit more on top...

You cant spend poorly on some players, raise the 'average wage', and then expect others to put up with being 'short changed'. The club has effectively set the wage of a first team midfielder at 50-60k. It might not be right, but I can see why he'd hold out for that figure... Even at such a young age.

Bentaleb will sign in the end, no chance he's going anyone above us as he's not good enough yet and will get nowhere near the game time we offer him.

Delighted Paulinho is gone and we've got rid of one early. Kaboul, Chiriches, Fazio or Bobby next please!
