Has there been any examples of a player taking a 50% wage cut just to return to a club he used to play for?
Not off the top of my head, no.

Not sure what that proves though. If he loves the club and wants to return as much as people have recently claimed it won't make any odds. I think a bigger stumbling block is paying £60m-£80m for a 28 year old with a history of continuous injuries. That will be the reason we won't sign him, it won't even get as far as discussing wages.

Ok say bale is on £350k a week and has two years left on his contract. Why would he take a pay cut to join us when he could stay there for two more years and earn more?
A few reasons - he hates Madrid, and the Spanish-speaking heathens that he cannot understand. Thus would be willing to take a cut to leave.

Or, they say you can stay, but you will be training with the kids for 2 years.

Or, we offer him a 4-year deal at 150, with bonuses tied to individual and team performances. He gets to play, goes to a place where he is loved.

It still a tough sell - but with the money he has - perhaps that is not a motivating factor right now.

It's happened in the past for us keane and ade being examples of where the club want rid they'll pay part of the wages if they move.

Yeah, we have heard that before. And I guess I am getting lost in the argument that Bale and the like wouldn't take a lesser wage.

My point was that contracts are to be negotiated. It isn't a direct transfer of the current contract and thus suggesting Bale wouldn't take 150 a week is pure speculation.

Edit: This rumor has more clout then this forums know it all attitude about what players think and would take financially. New contracts are negotiated and are not something to speculate about. If it happens it happens because we were able to meet XYZ's demands and not the prior contracts stipulations.

Fair enough. I'm not sure Bale loves us as much as some fans want to believe but I agree, it won't get to that stage anyway.

Maybe but i'd guess his representatives will push to get every last penny out of any deal.

This really is just a pessimist versus and optimist argument. The pessimist says we don't have the money and all players and reps are greedy (which is grounded in real world examples) and the optimist says that players hold the cards and can make up their own minds without the input of their entourage.

I think most examples of players leaving and getting less money would probably be made up with signing on fees.

Rooney is different. He's nearing retirement and always said he'll only play for Everton.

I think he said that Utd and Everton were the only premier league teams he'd play for. He could have earned more by moving abroad.

Anyway I'm not sure the whole half the wages argument really applies as players usually get massive loyalty payments when they move clubs these days which offsets some of the lost wages.

Rooneys is a strange case, as Utd paid up the final year of his deal, so not only did he get best part of £15m up front from Utd, he probably got a hefty signing on fee from Everton as they got him on a free.
He's probably not that much out of pocket from switching clubs.

Barkley is off to Chelsea it seems.....lets hope we tie up Sessegnon but I hope Poch really didn't want Barkley as it would be worrying if we have let him go to them lot if Poch wanted him, given it seemed he preferred spurs and from I heard Poch wanted him

This will be serious underwhelming from our leader not backing his manager

Hopefully I'm wrong

Sam saying he’s going is all about the messsging to RB and their fans. It’s also inviting offers in the hope that Spurs open the wallet.

Whilst I feel pissed that RB fell through, as we will not deal until summer, for reasons will not share. Rest assured that there is s player all but tied up in similar position, that is likely to cost a good few bob, for summer transfer.

I am told that if we had a choice, everyone would opt for this player. No hints as do not want it to go viral. We are very keen on someone from Watford. No hard guesses there, but summer. Let’s wait before we start shooting our Daniel.

I hope the player all but tied up will be announced in this window even if it is a summer transfer
