I'm happy with Dier and CCV as 4th and 5th choice CBs, especially now we have DM cover. Toby plays every game if fit anyway, I don't think we could keep 2 Wimmers happy.

I think Dier will play plenty of CB throughout his career, I think a lot of people (mostly non-spurs) are saying he's awful there mainly based on that OG for England.

unless Toby is keen to back up playing a euro's with having to manage a solid 60 game stretch in the season with Jan out for an extended period of time, we need a back-up CB

Amazed people want to move Dier from defensive mid, and have ccv, who quite obviously isn't ready or we would have seen him last season. If Toby breaks his leg first game, you want Dier there for 4 months and ccv back up? Ok then.....

We managed fine with them last season, we have more cover this season than we did then. Stop being so dramatic.

If Toby breaks his leg first game, then we still have a few weeks to get a CB in, but as none of us have any ITK on Toby breaking said leg (I hope!!), we should probably drop it.

Plus Dier had to play center back in cup games. We don't want that
I don't see that as a big problem now that Wanyama has signed. What's the point in spending on a CB at this stage if it affects our ability to buy quality players further up the field? The reality is you can't sign world class defenders to come in as backup. At the end of the day if Toby gets injured the player stepping in is never going to be as good. People need to accept that.

An older head wouldn't go a miss. Not an outlandish outlay, but someone with a bit of know how, to drag the team over the line when needed.

Hugo is the closest we have, but a Cambiasso type player could really help our young squad, there aren't too many experienced heads for the youngsters to turn too.

The Chelsea game is the standout example of when an a player like this could have settled the team and made sure we kept our heads on the pitch.

Like Edgar Davids?

That Chelsea game would have been carnage had he been on the pitch...

Granted he wouldn't have been on long...

I can see Ben Davies being utilised as a back up CB more this coming season.
That's a good shout. I'm still a little anxious about giving CCV lot of game time, clearly a lot of potential but I'd hope that we don't expect him to be able to fill Toby's boots just yet, and I'm sure that Poch knows exactly how to ease him in so I have faith with that. But with Wimmer and Dier we have good cover and Ben Davies has really impressed me at CB whenever I've seen him there for Wales, especially in this tournament

I do not think he will, not unless both Verthongen and Wimmer is out. I can't see him being an option to any other position than the left centre back, and that is the postion we are looking the strongest. Also, the difference in playing as the left of three for Wales and as the left of two for us is rather big.

CBs and GKs don't need resting like players who press do. John Terry for example played 60 games a season for 15 consecutive seasons.

Verts is apparently due back mid-August, so he'll miss the first week or two at most.

He'll obviously be behind Wimmer and Dier but he's a good option to have. Also imagine we're really unlucky with injuries to our centre backs (unlikely I know) and Wanyama is out too. We're going to want to keep Dier in midfield with no-one else fit to play his role so Davies wouldn't be a bad option as a worst case scenario.

It's also worth nothing that we virtually play a back 3 anyway, basically a 3-5-1-1 with Dier dropping just in front of Alderweireld and Verts

no we didn't - major player burnout mid-season.

Not at CB. Its one position where they are not running round as much so can place twice a week.

Anyway, no ITK on extra CB's for a reason.

Poch likes to have players who can play on more than one position, so other than the Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Wimmer, we have Davies, Wanyama and Dier who can play CB plus youngsters CCV and Ball.

A pretty decent set of back ups.
