interested to see de ligt. caught a couple of ajax games last season but he didn't look great, seemed to struggle against movement and pace so will be good to see how he handles the likes of sterling, lingard and rashford.

Is it me or does Maguire not look like a footballer at all?
He looks like the guy who comes over to push your dodgem when it packs up at the fun fair.

Very odd. He’s called up a load of centre halves incl Maguire, Mawson & Tarlowski.
He’s ignored Lascelles & Dunk.
He’s discarded Jones, Smalling & Cahill.
So he’s playing Walker at centre half. And Gomez at left centre half.
Wow.

I don't think that's an outrageous selection. Gomez is a centre back really rather than a RB. It's a friendly, so seeing what Walker is like as a centre back in a back three is hardly controversial - it's exactly the sort of thing a manager should be using friendlies (or early round cup matches for that matter) for. It might work, it might not, but don't be afraid to try.

Issues for me are, as always, the centre of the park and who is going to dictate the play. But that is an ongoing problem for English football.

To be fair to Southgate, he's been fairly consistent from what I have seen in what he wants from centre backs. He wants people who can play there to have a bit of ability with the ball at their feet. Gomez is comfortable on the ball, Maguire can bring it out from the back, Mawson has that long cross field pass in his armoury.

It doesn't matter if they play for Man Utd and have League titles, Jones and Smalling are absolute spaztards with the ball at their feet. Cahill isnt much better, has a bit of technique but no vision, and has been kicked out of the Chelsea team currently.

People might not agree with the approach, they might not be the best pure defenders at the biggest clubs, but at least so far in this aspect I see a manager trying to follow an approach and being consistent with it.
