Didn't Hughes feature prominently for the U21's when Southgate was the head coach? Maybe he feels Hughes doesn't offer more than Chalobah etc.

Don't go in the thread, but would have 100% agreed with you. People swoon over the young player getting games in the EFL and assume they must be the best around, when there is so much more talent stuck in the actual top academies. Glad Mount got a call up quality player, if Southgate was around a few years back, he would likely have called up Prithcard while he was at Brentford.

Southgate is going on talent rather than what young players are just getting games, which is refreshing. Doing his best to bring through the talent, sadly still a good possibility he won't get a Chelsea once he goes back, look at Loftus-Cheek

Some City ITK claimed he was all set to join us and even spoke with Poch. City didn't like the idea of him joining us and essentially forced him to move abroad.

Very different players. Chalobah is competing more with Henderson, Dier etc (potentially Winks too). Mount and Maddison are the ones selected above Hughes.

True but my biggest problem with Southgate he never used to pick players who didnt play for the top clubs.

He would often choose to pick players playing for the old sky 4 rather than the best players actually playing football. Hughes would always be overlooked for a chelsea/arsenal youth player

How does someone who has played 4 mins of premier league minutes in the last year get picked for the england squad.

Now I would be more forgiving if he was a young player but this is a guy who has played 700 mins of top league football and yet is 23 years old. He shouldn't be near the england team as he isn't near his own first team.

I understand we dont have many DM but this isn't a person riddled with injuries his whole career

My issue with this, is that we are falling in to that trap of grooming players for england who havent necessarily earnt it and then we will be stuck with the same group like the golden generation and no competition because partly there will never be given any opportunities for other people

For example, Dier, he was overlooked for Chambers at the U21's by southgate
