I think the cuts are fair but why include Winks and players like Redmond in the first place? He’s cut them out without even watching them train or anything. What’s the point of getting someone like Redmond’s hopes up and then cut him a few days later without even seeing him? What I’m basically saying is why not just name a 23 man squad in the first place and then if there are injuries, add people then! Why name 27? He knew Winks had only played one game in the last few months. Why name him then cut him days later?

Or have I missed something really obvious...?

The England players who aren't involved in the champions League final have already started training so he has been able to get see what Redmond and JWP bring to the squad. I imagine that the extra numbers were useful for five a side games as well as we only had about 13 players initially. If Walker or Delph had been injured in the FA Cup final Winks and Trippier would have been selected.

The justification for cutting Winks equally applies to Kane. Neither should be going anywhere near this Mickey Mouse tournament.

Nah, we know Kane has come back from this type of injury before and been fine, Winks has had an operation and is still seen as a risk.

Shame about Winksy being culled. Yeah he probably needs the rest. but he should be starting in the England midfield, not being dropped from the squad.

I don't get why you'd select both Dier and Rice. That's the same type of player, make a choice on either. I'd have cut one of those and taken the gamble on Winks.

Yeah and sustained the exact same injury again and again because he gets no real time to rest and recuperate. Playing in the Champions League final is one thing, it's a big deal and means something but playing in this Mickey Mouse tournament that will have nobody watching, is beyond the pale.

He sustained the injury due to bad luck not lack of rest though, he's either rolled his ankle due to players landing on it or him not planting his foot properly when he jumps.

There is no such thing as luck, he sustained the injury because of a weakness in his ankle. The best way to heal is to rest it over a sustained period of time. We need him for the final, England should fuck off and use someone else for once

The one that is just ridiculous is Lingard. He is definitely one of Southgates favourites but the guy is utter gash. One of my good mates is a Utd fan as watches every game, he cannot stand him and says that he is down at relegation level in the Premier League if not top level Championship.

There are a few players left in the squad who I dont really agree with:

Gomez - Has barely played all season.
Delph - Same as above.
Dier - Same as above.
Lingard - Not good enough.
Rashford - Questionable one but just is not good enough for me and has had a terrible season.

Then you haven't got any of the following:

Wan-Bissaka, Maddison.

This is cute but it's just paranoia based on a desperate narrative that England want to destroy our players.

Tell me how he has a weakness when he's injured his right ankle three times and his left ankle twice? That doesn't make any sense?

Every time he's injured his ankle a player has either landed on them or he's twisted it and landed on it himself, look:

Either way the final is this Saturday and the Nations League is the week after so it doesn't affect us regardless, he plays in the NL and he has the whole summer to get some R/R not to mention the fact that he's literally had the past 6 weeks to rest up, if it was still a problem then he wouldn't be in contention for the CL final or the NL.

Delph over Winks is just laughable.

Trippier deservedly so though but so many overrated England players never get dropped and trips gets dropped straight away!

Surely Winks has been left out because he's only just returning from a long injury? If he was fully fit I think he'd be in the squad.

Playing full matches in the U21 Euros and experiencing a tournament is seen as more important than maybe a few minutes of first team football.

Completely agree about Lingard. If he wasn't a United academy graduate he wouldn't be anywhere near either an England squad or a top six club.

Who is the alternative for Harry Kane? It's much easier to replace Winks them Kane.

And just because it's new it doesn't mean that is a Mickey Mouse tournament. I think it's been a great success so far as teams are actually playing meaningful games.

We play two games in three or four days. Southgate probably wants one for the semi and one for the final/3rd place match.

Gomez has done very well for England and will probably be in the first eleven next season, so it makes sense to take him. Wan-Bissaka will probably get his chance next season. He's not ahead of Walker or Alexander Arnold yet.

I just don't see it as necessary. Delph and Henderson are able to be the sitting midfielder and I'd prefer Winks as he can move the ball better and then just one of the CB's masquerading as CM's. If they've got doubts about WInks I'd have even preferred just keeping Ward-Prowse, especially as we seem to be playing 4-3-3 recently and I'd say we're arguably already heavy on defensive midfielders in that case.

Maybe Southgate wants to try Henderson more advanced the way Klopp has used him the last couple of months.

100% this. New does not equal Mickey Mouse, the groups in the autumn were the most fun international matches I've seen since the 90s. It's a huge success in my book.

Still don't think you need both of them and would rather a ball player, and if you did want to surely just drop a centre back (Keane) as either of them can cover there.

If it was a friendly them maybe, but Southgate is taking this tournament very seriously. He wants players who know the position that he wants them to play.

The Nations League is bullshit. It means our players, instead of resting for next season, have to play pointless games over the summer risking tiredness and injury. I know it will never happen because of all the flag waving simpletons,, but one day I hope we ban our players from playing for international teams.
