What is it about Paulinho that you are not rating ?

touch, control, passing, vision, technical ability, pace perhaps. he goes box-to-box well and gets onto the end of things but i don't see a very complete footballer. i know bringing up a mark lawrenson point is going to completely devalue my opinion but during the confeds he described paulinho as "ok" and "wooden" - that's exactly what i see too. i'll agree that dembele hasn't been at his best for a while, why that is i'm not sure but he's just so much more graceful with the ball and physically superior too. i know they're not 100% exactly the same type of player but if i'm picking one alongside say sandro, then it's still the moose for me.

Vision is a fair criticism, but do you really think Dembele has good vision, because I don't ?

Technique wise Dembele is more adept with a ball at his feet for sure, very comfortable on the ball, but Paulinho's technique seems pretty tidy to me and his pace seems reasonably good for the player/role he plays. Dembele isn't exactly speedy. It would be a tougher call for me, I think Paulinho is equally tenacious but does simple things more quickly and looks to get into the box more, which I think is something we need. I also think that defensively Paulinho is more diligent.

I don't think as a player Paulinho will set the world alight in the footballing sense, but I think really good teams often have players like him. He works hard, has good technique (IMO), and will score maybe 7/8 goals a season.

I think the reason Dembele has looked a bit meh for a while is because he actually isn't a real CM in the truest sense. Just performing the perfunctory duties of a busy **** is not second nature to him. I watched him against Arsenal and players sometimes drift past him off the ball, he lacks discipline to track them sometimes.

I think Dembele is tenacious, technically very good footballer but played in a cm2 you will never see the best of him, he has too much responsibility, bit like Modric. Neither will let you down, they are such good footballers, and Dembele is much better off the ball than Modric, but both are better on it than off it.

Paulinho is better off the ball than both I think, and will possibly get in the box more than both too.

Paulinho ticks a hell of a lot of boxes for me, and ticks most of them very well. As far as box to box midfielders go I think he has the lot.

Ok he's not going to offer bundles of vision and craft but that's not, primarily at least, his role - its what we have Eriksen and Holtby etc for.

How anybody couldn't of been impressed with the his performance against Swansea baffles the fuck out of me.

Really hope we see an improvement in Dembele though. He's got a lot more to offer than we are seeing currently. Absolutely fabulous player when he's motoring properly.

i like ramires who is practically the same player as paulinho, just he seems to do everything tidier and quicker.

I've listened to this podcast up to where Windy was about to come on and talk about the development group.

Listening to Troy Townsend was absolutely fascinating and really gave a huge insight on everything from how it feels to be a spurs mad dad of a spurs mad kid who has been at the club since he was 8yo, to the coaching differences between Redknapp and AVB, the way Reserve games were treated, to the lack of quality coaching in England in general.

Troy Townsend really articulated things well, was honest and insightful. A really good listen.

It's marginal, Ramires has over a year in age and 3 years of Prem experience over Paulinho and cost a bit more.

He's back in the team as well as, not at the expense of, Paulinho though.

oscar's been injured though so one of them will lose their place when he's back. even then, it's only the opinion of the brazil coach.

Fascinating to read all this. Troy was brilliant, among the best episodes that we've ever produced purely because he was willing to talk to openly. Thanks everyone for listening. We're planning a Hazard/Roberts pod very soon.

All the best

Was a great episode - slightly different from the usual as it was a bit more formal but it was very insightful. I was quite suprised at how willing Troy was to discuss everything asked and you can also tell he's a big big spurs fan.

Any chance of getting Troy on a couple times a month...or more. Once a week would be great.
