Squad reminds me of what Poch had. Much smaller numbers but all players who bought into him. We had a lot of moaning about lack of cover back then too and we had Europe. Better to have a smaller squad who are all dedicated. Centre back is well covered too so Dier can cover dm if worst comes to worst. Better versatility up top now too. Also better for 1 player to play 300 minutes a month than say 3 players play 100 a month.

Everyone needs to remember no Europe for second half of season so we don’t need much squad depth unless we get really unlucky with injuries.

we’re also in great shape in case a last minute deal comes up

We had a squad that was formulated towards 4-3-3, with 2 for each position (22 players)

2 GK: Hugo, Gollini
2 RB: Emerson, Doherty
5 CB: Rodon, Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga, Romero
2 LB: Reg, Davies
6 CM: Winks, Skipp, Hoj, Dele, Gio, Ndombele
6 FW: Son, Kane, Bergwijn, Gil, Moura, Sess

Now we have a team set up for 3-4-3, with 2 for each position (20 players)

2 GK: Hugo, Gollini
2 RWB: Emerson, Doherty
6 CB: Rodon, Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga, Davies, Romero
2 LWB: Reg, Sess
4 CM: Winks, Skipp, Hoj, Bentacur
5 FW: Son, Kane, Bergwijn, Kulu, Moura

So when you look at it, we have reduced the squad massively while maintaining 2 players for each position and pivoting towards Conte’s formation. The gaps we have are in the FW and CB position which I’m sure we’ll look to resolve in the summer.

Call me a dreamer but I still think we may announce at least one more signing before tonight, even if it's just a loan. I'm not sure we would have let so many others go without having someone else to bring in. Let's see...

We're fine for squad depth. We're only in two competitions FFS, and basically have two players for every position. I'm not wholly convinced by the two singings, but its important we got rid of the 3 wage burners who Conte did not want. Rodon, Tanganga, Doc etc will be much easier to sell in the summer.

Happy with the players in but disappointed not to have another attacking option. We haven't actually dealt with the outs properly as we have the two biggest problems on loans at clubs that don't have the funds to buy them outright. Those two need to be addressed again in the summer when we'll have the same problem. Hope the priority is wing back and a world class wing forward in the summer.

Missing Diaz and Dembele to a lesser extent at least shows we're looking at that.

On paper it's crazy that we sent our most talented bunch of midfielders out on loan. But I guess it is really a strong statement sent out by Conte - train hard, buck up or you are out no matter how talented you are. I'm expecting a better mentality to come from the lads with more passion and commitment now, with the slackers gone.

Tanguy, Lo Celso and Dele should really be ashame of themselves. Even Winks gave Conte's some confidence when he was given the chance to play. I really hope these 3 disappointments don't come back.

Although we have to catch up some league games midweek.

Happy with the outs but the jury is out for the ins. The mixed reviews on our two incomings give me some doubts in a way and also would have liked another player who really can contribute with scoring goals.

Wonder how summer will go for Paratici. He could only seal deals for players of his former club now.

4 out and 2 in leaves us feeling uncomfortably light imo. Still time I guess ?‍♂️

Great to see us back Conte though. Having 2 trusted players must be better than 4 that aren’t!

I'm not sure how the loans out help us in summer. In fact, they might hurt us. If they don't have early deadlines for decisions on options, then their clubs could keep us guessing until deadline day, and we won't know what our budget is, or how many squad places we have.

We need another CM but I can just about deal with 4 players plus Dier in emergency, we don't have two players for every position up front though? Where's Kane's cover? And before you say Son, then that just weakens our bench massively.

Great to see the deadwood out, but Gil leaving without someone else in is somewhat surprising, we remain one Kane injury away from being totally exposed up front, but that's nothing new. Still time to go for one last surprise.

I'm satisfied that Conte is being backed. How many times have we been in situations where a manager wants players out and the club fails to shift them, holding out for unrealistic fees that the market won't bear? Conte made his assessment of the squad and we got rid of those he decided he wanted out. Kulusevski and Bentancur look like quality additions. Much work to be done, but that's a big step in the right direction.
I don't think this can be over-stated.

In years past, Levy would never have sanctioned these kind of deals without holding out for an unrealistic value.

Every transfer window has been the same recently - can't buy, until we free up spots, and then it takes forever to free up spots. We have actually done a bit of the hard work for the summer window now - and that will give us a lot of flexibility this summer.

So looks like Ndombele, Dele, Lo Celso & Gil out and the 2 Juve in. I think to get those 4 big earners who aren’t contributing to the team out is excellent work, especially in January. But feels like we’ve left ourselves short with just 2 in. I guess Romero would be like a new signing if ever back from injury!
In terms of our defenders, we have plenty of depth. Quality at Wing Back? Probably not great. But we can make it work for the remainder of the season.

We have 4 midfielders for two, occasionally three spots: Winks, PEH, Skippy, Benatacur. (This is where I am most worried. As it does feel like we could use one more).

Attackers.... plenty. No need for anymore.

In short: I think the only area of some small concern is midfield. But apart from that, I think the squad looks solid.

(Also, don't forget that in a pinch, Dier can play DM, if we down a few midfielders).

I give this window a solid 9/10. As it sets us up brilliantly for the summer, where there's at least five or six very good deals to be had.
