The Soldado debate

I'm just not worried. The panache with which he put those two penalties away was such a contrast with the sort of penalty misses we've seen from Spurs in recent years. Why do we denigrate goals scored from penalties when so many players find them difficult? He's playing an effective role within the team. His movement is fine and intelligent. I reckon if his and Defoe's roles were reversed then Defoe would have missed at least one of those pens (because he always does), and Soldado would have bagged plenty in the cup games.

£26m is a lot to pay for someone who is good at taking penalties!

What about someone who draws defenders with him, opening up the space for others to run into and score an injury-time winner. Or holding the ball up and playing an important part in creating a goal-scoring chance for others.

It's not like we've had a striker who is more than capable of going on scoring droughts lasting months and doing fuck all else besides in the meantime to compare it with.

That dripping sound is indeed sarcasm. That's how I roll.

Good player

But overpriced.

Money should have gone on someone like benteke who has about 10 more years of top level football ahead of him.

And JD had about 2. Both of which landed at the feet of Chelsea players.

We need a striker capable of playing up front on his own in AVB's preferred system and I find it all quite surreal that there's even an argument as to whether JD is more suited to the role. I love the little guy but fucking hell, the best part of 10 yrs and 4 different managers/HCs not fancying him as the go to guy and there's still a debate about it.

I now understand what it must be like for those not as in love with DL to discuss things with the BSoDL.

Benteke's early form certainly makes £25m seem like a more than fair price now. Especially considering he's only going to get better with each yr that passes. A whole hell of a lot better imo.

Look. All we want is a combo of proper Ronaldo, Jimmy Greaves and Van Basten. It's not asking for much. Why can't we have nice things?
You mean something like this?

He seems like a player who's got excellent reflexes and instinct. unfortunately on many occasions he hits the ball straight at the keeper. he's not a corner picking striker, more like a quick slash or parry type of finisher, feeding on rebounds or low crosses he can attack with his feet. On recent evidence, he doesn't have much an aerial presence.

He probably needs to take a moment when the ball comes to him to see if the situation has changed rather than simply angling it goalward, but the problem could be that he's weak in possession. He rarely chooses to keep the ball.

Defoe was one of the most blunt finishers for years, by smashing it as hard as he could with his laces when good direction is so much more effective. However defoe's gotten alot smarter with his finishing.

Some of the lay offs soldado does are excellent and intelligent. Defoe would never do them. I don't think it would occur to him, but that's probably because throughout his career he's very capable of creating a space for himself or to make a chance out of very little. Its a shame they are both small though.

I really think we need to try a big physical striker, like erm adebayor?? come on AVB. wtf! that's a whole other issue

Far too early to judge him, he has come to a new country to play up top on his own which isnt easy.

He has just played a few games in a Prem, so I would not be too harsh on him. This is a different world than La Liga. And IMO we have not offered him the service he needs.

This is why I feel he should have been given more Europa cup game time - could have built his confidence by padding his goal scoring record early doors and helped him settle

Benteke has had one good season he isn't worth £25m, Soldado is a proven consistent performer.

I'd rather pay that money for the latter.

Today he didn't play well, he should have worked Terry and Luiz (on the shoulder) more but I'm not concerned. Fully expect him to score 20 + in the league and over 30 in all competitions.

If it weren't for wonderful blocks in his last few games he would have doubled his tally already. On another day he would have had a hatrick against Cardiff, and he hit the post against Norwich too. He didn't offer much today but he got an assist that's decent.

I think because Levy tried so hard for David Villa and Benteke for quite some time, he wanted to get in a striker desperately and I'm sure Valencia were aware of this and got a great deal. I'm still surprised how much we paid for him, not the usual Levy signing with sell on value

You only had to watch him in La Liga to know he is class, I'm sure once he gets one or two he will be full of confidence and banging them in. With our excellent midfield I'm sure he will be ok.

As for Defoe he shows absolute quality in 7-8 games then can go missing for 7-8 games. He just never has that consistency all throughout the season, and he seems to show more determination and desire when his place is under threat, that's only good for Spurs

I do think it is a bit of a problem at the moment. It's obviously not in there being a lack of quality within Soldado because he's a very good player, but he needs to be fed, simple as. If we're not going to supply him much then we're not gonna get much from him.

We have enough against most teams but in those games like today's and against Arsenal sometimes if it's tight or if we're up against it you need someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck, Soldado isn't that player, in my opinion.

I honestly think that unless we adapt our playing style to support him more then we're not going to get much more from him.
