seeing steven gerrard about to be appointed rangers manager i can't imagine it will be too long until parker starts looking at or getting 1st team job offers from elsewhere. at least if/when he does go we'll have someone we can trust to take our young players as we don't seem to have many links with football league clubs bar stevenage - which is more down to convenience than anything.

Skip seems to be the sort of lad who will make it due to his drive and determination. The most talented often do not make it. Mabbutt was quite a limited footballer but had a great career.

I think that's a little harsh. Injuries completely buggered him up. He was a very decent young defender (from what I've heard - his best days were before my time) but he had a horrendous knee injury which bothered him for his whole career and lead to him having mobility and training issues (which is why he was prone to being "chunky"). There was also the brutal face injury that he got thanks to Fashanu.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this. As I say I only remember the latter day, crocked Mabbutt 90-93ish.

Edwards to Rangers anyone ? if Gerrard can’t set him an example I doubt anyone can.

He was midfield when we bought him also filled in at full back. Centre back with Gough by 86-87. He made the most of what he had. As did Lineker, Keegan and more recently James Milner.

If I remember correctly, Mabbutt was diabetic and had to inject himself with insulin before a match.

I think @Westmorlandspur is right, Mabutt wasn't a very talented footballer, seemed like a nice fella with a good attitude and was versatile, which helped endear him to managers I think. But he was pretty mediocre footballer and was a bit too nice.

packing him off to scotland to play for a completely unproven coach sounds like a recipe for disaster to me anyway. i don't know where edwards goes from here tbh but i can't see us going for another loan after the last fiasco.

Be interesting what pre season brings for a number of youth team players considering it’s a World Cup year, either way I hope we start using loans more next season, I think professional football at any level is better than basically non competitive u23 level

After last preseason I don't know if who gets to go on it is a good indication of anything. It feels like Poch just uses it as an excercise to set an example to other academy players.

Last season he took players that nobody particularly rates, but may have a good work ethic, or he may just like at the expense of talented players seemingly just to show the 'talented players' that they need to work harder. He had no intention of playing Amos, Georgiou, Dinzeyi and nor should he as at that stage they were nowhere good enough, but I see no other reason why he took them over other players, more talented players

Our u17s are playing in the Liam Brady Cup at Arsenal's training ground. It's us, Arsenal, Chelsea and Vitesse.

We beat Vitesse 1-0
We beat Chelsea 4-1 - Cooper got 2 assists and a goal

Face Arsenal tomorrow morning, then 1st v 2nd and 3rd v 4th. I imagine we will be in the final

I think you're harsh on Skipp. Relative to his position I think you could make a case he is on a similar level to KWP and Onomah at the moment. I think his attacking/passing side is underrated as he is restricted to certain roles, and I imagine it will eventually disappear, but as a DM he's the closest we've had to Veljkovic. And again they play the role in a very different style.

I have high hopes for Skipp and the way he has taken and dominated u23 football is reminiscent of Veljkovic and Onomah however stylistically he isn't on their level, and won't catch the eye as much. I think he's one of the best players I've seen in the academy. I reckon Skipp has the best chance of playing for us in the future based of his style, work ethic and ability. Also for those who may not have seen Skipp, I am by no means down playing his ability, it just isn't on Onomah's level, who had it all.

I think Skipp's potential at this moment is a top PL CM/DM

Agree. Everything that he's shown to date seems to indicate that as long as his application doesn't falter he'll make it. Technically very decent but looks like a leader already. He also looks like he'll just work harder.

I’m prepared to be proven wrong. Yes, he has the things IGS, and you are talking about. Just not my cup of tea, but want to see him make it.

Mabbs was quick and had a real spring which made up a bit for his lack of height. Very talented and a massive heart of course (think about playing at that level with diabetes!).

His partnership with Gough was fantastic and high quality.

I think Dane Scarlett may be playing in this tournament with our u17s. Considering he turned 14 a couple of months ago that's impressive.

I can't confirm it but social media suggests it may be the case

Parrott playing today is it on TV anywhere ?

Not that I'm aware of. I believe only England and Spain's games will be shown during groups, then the knockout games will be.

So Ireland need to get out of their group before their games are televised. Unless you find/hear differently then post
