two of those three were both fully fit just two weeks ago, while the other is back in training. for them both to get injured at the same time is bad luck, unless there was anything we could've done to prevent either injury. that's common sense, not nonsense.

Other supposedly back in training after year in sidelines and history of injuries while one of remaining two also having injury history doesn't look promising to anyone. That Jan had injury too isn't just bad luck, he isn't superman either and those things happen. Having only 2 center halves that played last season (and one of them sort of injury prone) and one that has been out for season and not back yet is bad policy.

I can see sense in getting him because he played with Jan, is only 24, would come cheap, and would probably settle easier with the Belgium contingent but im thinking we really need someone of a higher level not just an easy option. Sounds like a levy type of deal though!

Is Toby, a right sided centre back. Can he only play centre back, or can he cover at full back?

There is no space for 4-5 top centre backs in the squad when you're not even in the CL. I think he can do a decent job to give Dawson a rest. I would like to see another young quick centre back as well. Sadly I won't count Kaboul into any plannings

He can play Right back as well. He plays that at Belgium. Like Verty on the left.
thanks mate. Well he certainly fits into the AVB type of signing then, players who can play in a number of positions. Thus getting the squad numbers down.

If we're looking at cover immediately, think this would be a good signing. Would settle in quickly, which is a major plus for joining this close to the season starting.

maybe our real DoF is not Levy, not Sherwood, not Baldini....it's Jan Vertonghen!

I like the idea of being a backup player for RB as well. That could leave us with Rose and Vertonghen as LBs, Alderweireld and Walker as RBs, Dawson, Vertonghen, Kaboul and Alberweireld as the full complement of CBs.

I still maintain that if Toby ends up a Spur, it's as a deadline day move.

The price is already set and we know they want to sell. It also wouldn't surprise me to see it go through for less because that's just what Levy does.

Now it's time to explore all the other options at CB and if nothing works out then we grab Toby.

I don't think we should view him as an option at RB, honestly. He plays there for Belgium because they really have nothing that resembles a realistic option at RB. They are a country stacked with CB talent but really lacking in fullback talent. Emergency situation? Sure. But probably not as a good backup option. I think Naughton is staying, personally.

Ajax confirm offer for Toby Alderweireld after Tottenham linked with defender

Ajax have confirmed an offer has been received for Toby Alderweireld amid reports the Belgian defender is again wanted in the Premier League.
Alderweireld rejected a move to Norwich City earlier in the summer after failing to agree personal terms regarding a switch to Carrow Road.
Liverpool have long been linked with a bid for the 24-year-old, while reports on Sunday claimed that Tottenham have joined the chase for Alderweireld.
The speculation suggested that Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas wants to sign Alderweireld and his Ajax team-mate Christian Eriksen in a £15million double deal.
However, according to the Dutch media, Russian outfit Spartak Moscow are the club to have submitted the latest offer for the defender.
Ajax's director of football Marc Overmars declined to name the interested party, but confirmed talks are ongoing.
"We have received an offer," Overmars told De Telegraaf. "We won't give any names as we are still in talks.
"But, just like with Norwich City earlier, I expect we can work out a deal with this club."
Alderweireld has one year left on his contract at Ajax and has previously expressed a desire to move to either the Premier League or Bundesliga.
