This is a bold statement but for me, Toby is second only to Kane in his importance to our team, his ability to read danger well in advance and then distribute the ball sensibly is unmatched by the others......he gels the other members of the defence.

Never forget that we were basically Liverpool the season before we signed Toby, great going forward and worst defensive record in the top half. From the minute Toby arrived we've had at least the joint best defensive record every season and only looked fragile (putting it kindly) at the back when he's injured.

Best defender in the league, for so many reasons.

Now we have Sanchez i'm not as concerned as I once was about this.

Of course I don't want us to lose him but if he goes abroad and for a sizeable fee then there isn't the huge pressure to replace him like there was with Walker going. As I said we already have 3 competent centre halves in Sanchez, Dier and Verts. We'd still need a replacement of course but I think we'd cope as long as the funds were re-invested.

Personally I would go for a LCB to replace him as obviously Verts probably only has 2/3 years left in him now.

I'd say he was more likely to stay in the Prem unfortunately. Nothing set in stone, but if I had to put money on it right now, it would be that he'd be following Walker.

In that case i'd rather us keep him for another 2 years. I don't like us selling players to rival clubs.

I didn't mind that Walker left, but I didn't like the fact we sold him to City too much.

would make sense because im not sure Kompany can be relied on anymore with his injuries

Even if they get Evans. Doubt they'd want both.

We know from his transfer to us that him and his agent are ruthless in getting the deal/transfer they want so none of this hassle should come as a surprise.

Spot on. A few people have mentioned 50/60 million would be great business for a 28year old but he's the best centre back in the league and has been for the last three seasons. He's in his prime and we'd need to be compensated for that. Would have to be a higher fee than VVD (who's only 2 years younger).

Agreed, I don't think it is good business at all.

We'd need an equally good but younger player to replace him. That will almost certainly cost more. And if by some miracle of clever scouting and negotiation it doesn't cost more, that should be to our benefit, not whoever is trying to buy Toby from us.

But I don't think we'll sell him. I think his contract will be extended.

It will be disappointing if he goes, but that's the way the food chain works. There aren't that many clubs that are a clear step up from us, and that can afford to pay silly wages and fees, but unfortunately at least three or four of those are in the Prem. On the other hand, we can plunder many more clubs for players like Sanchez, who looks more now like Toby's replacement.

For me, the important thing is recruitment. If they offer 50m+, he's obviously leaving. We need to have things lined up, by which I don't mean superstars - I mean the likes of Sanchez; those with huge potential but who aren't walking into City, Real or Barca just yet. Any young player will look at Bale, Modric and realise that if you make the grade at Spurs, one of the mega clubs is a real possibility. And that's not a bad thing, because it is utterly unrealistic to put us in that bracket at this moment in time.

50m+ for toby is nothing in this market ... if it is 50m to 80m, then don't sell him ... If city offer 100m , then sell him. That way we will make statement that you need to pay megabucks in order to buy from tottenham .....

I thought Foyth was the understudy? We've had some good buys but I'm not confident in our scouting at the moment. If we do bring in someone I'm guessing it wont be until the closing moments of the summer transfer window, which means the player would miss preseason.

Get how things work @Trix but isn't there a concern with pushing Citeh out of sight?
Walker actually was understandable but there aren't too many Toby type players in Europe now.

That would be a real slap in the face, morale in the team would be low and the vultures would start circling kane, Alli and Dier.

Yes, I agree.

I understand and to a degree admire the way Levy allows players to leave when they want to. If you want the best players and you can’t afford the very top rates, you have to offer something to compensate. Knowing that the chairman will not ultimately stand in your way if you’ve served the club well and given good value must help us to attract good players and get good performances from them, so it all makes sense.

But the time has to come when you shift up a gear, and now, with our best team in decades and the new stadium upon us, it feels like the right time to do that. Stop strengthening our opponents, stop weakening our own team, and go all out for success.

I trust Levy’s judgement in many things, and I just hope he’s got his sense of timing right on this one.

If we were prepared to sell Walker - who had plenty of years on his contract, is at least a year younger, and, according to most observers, the best right back in the league - for £45m-50m (with add ons), then my strong suspicion is that we would accept a similar amount for Toby, given his contract situation and age.

I think the Van Dijk deal is a bit of an outlier, in that Southampton clearly demanded a sweetener for the tapping up; otherwise, it would have been nearer £60m. I think that's the near the maximum we could reasonably expect in this situation for Toby. If he wasn't injured and had 4y on his contract, it would be a different story.
