13:29 SUBSTITUTION - Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
Alan Pardew steps over to shake hands with Jermain Defoe, as the Spurs striker comes on for the final 20-odd minutes. Can he bring his Europa League form to the Premier?
SUBSTITUTION- Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
Double change for Spurs at the break - Sandro and Younes Kaboul are on for Vlad Chiriches and Mousa Dembele.
HALF-TIME - Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
12:39 DISALLOWED GOAL - Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
This Tottenham offside trap is hugely entertaining today. They step out again as Yohan Cabaye feeds a pass through to Shola Ameobi, who dances around Brad Friedel to put the ball in the net. He was offside that time though, Vlad Chiriches got it right.
12:14 GOAL - Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle - Loic Remy
A frantic five-minute spell ends with a Newcastle goal. Yoan Goufrran robs Paulinho in the middle of the park, threads the pass through and Loic Remy finishes superbly, gliding around Brad Friedel with two silky touches and poking in to the net...

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to ignore any criticism and continue their fine start to the season against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Spurs are currently fourth in the Premier League after picking up 20 points from their opening 10 games, while they sealed their place in the knock-out stages of the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over FC Sheriff on Thursday night.

However, the main talking point of the week has been the debate about whether Andre Villas-Boas was wrong not to substitute Hugo Lloris after the goalkeeper suffered a head injury in a collision with Romelu Lukaku during last weekend's 0-0 draw at Everton.

The Goodison Park stalemate left Tottenham with just nine league goals to their name so far this season and Villas-Boas was not happy with the impatience of the White Hart Lane fans after the previous home league game against Hull City.

Newcastle will be looking to further frustrate Spurs this weekend after keeping it tight against Chelsea last weekend before sealing a 2-0 win thanks to second-half goals from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy.

The victory over Jose Mourinho's side was the perfect way for the Magpies to respond after losing the Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland and then suffering defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the Capital One Cup.

The win also cemented Newcastle's position in the top half of the table, and Alan Pardew will now want his men to push on from ninth place.

Tottenham
Villas-Boas has confirmed goalkeeper Lloris will start Sunday's Premier League fixture at home to Newcastle.

The France captain played on in the 0-0 draw at Everton despite being knocked unconscious and Villas-Boas will recall his number one after resting him for the 2-1 Europa League win over FC Sheriff.

A number of other players can expect recalls but Danny Rose (toe), Sandro (hamstring), Zeki Fryers (groin) and Emmanuel Adebayor (foot) are all likely to miss out.

Newcastle
Newcastle skipper Fabricio Coloccini could return to the starting line-up at Tottenham.

The central defender has missed the last four games with a groin injury, and his absence has coincided with that of Steven Taylor, who is not expected back from his hamstring problem until after the break for international matches.

However, midfielder Cheick Tiote, who limped off against Chelsea last weekend with a muscle strain, is expected to resume at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas has said that Hugo Lloris will start in goal after sitting out Thursday's Europa League match in the wake of being knocked unconscious at Everton.

Several first-team players will return, but Sandro and Danny Rose are absent.

Newcastle are hopeful that captain Fabricio Coloccini will return to the side after missing the last four games with a groin injury.

Cheick Tiote is also expected to be fit, but Steven Taylor is again out.

preview.jpg

It's been something of a mixed week for Tottenham. The debate and publicity surrounding Hugo Lloris's head injury at Everton last Sunday led to a tetchy response from manager Andre Villas-Boas, while on the pitch all was well as Jermain Defoe scored a club record 23rd European goal to help Spurs qualify from the group with two games to spare.

It remains to be seen whether Defoe gets much of a look in this weekend, but Lloris, who was rested on Thursday, will return in goal a week on from the collision with Romelu Lukaku that briefly knocked him out.

It's a strange quirk, when you consider the talent they have, that Tottenham have only scored nine goals in their 10 league matches this season.

That's just one more than QPR managed at this stage last year and the same amount as Wolves did in 2011-12 - when both those sides went on to finish bottom of the league. They've been stingy at the back too though, with an impressive seven clean sheets so far.

Keeping clean sheets, certainly in matches against Tottenham, isn't something Newcastle have specialised in over recent seasons. They haven't managed to do so in any of the last 17 encounters.

Alan Pardew's team haven't won at White Hart Lane for just over five and a half years but they will be in good spirits after the 2-0 win over Chelsea last week.

facts.jpg

Head-to-head

  • This is the 150th meeting between the sides. Tottenham have won 63 matches, Newcastle 54 and there have been 32 draws.
  • Newcastle's last four visits to White Hart Lane have all ended in defeat, with Tottenham scoring 10 goals to Newcastle's one.
  • However, the Magpies have won six away games at White Hart Lane in the Premier League - they have only won more at Villa Park (eight).
Tottenham

  • There have only been 14 goals in Tottenham's 10 league games this season. Spurs have scored one goal fewer (nine) than struggling Fulham but have twice as many points. They have also scored 19 goals fewer than Man City but are one point above them.
  • Spurs have kept seven clean sheets in the league this season, more than any other side prior to this weekend's fixtures.
  • They are yet to concede a goal to a non-London side in the top flight this season.
Newcastle United

  • Thirteen of Newcastle's 14 league goals this season have been scored by Frenchmen. An Englishman has not scored any of their 33 Premier League goals in 2013.
  • One of those Frenchmen, Loic Remy, now has six goals in his last six league games.
  • Their 2-0 win over Chelsea ended a run of six league games without a clean sheet.
  • The Mapgies are the only team outside of the bottom three to have conceded more than 10 goals away from home this season.

Going to be a real tough Sunday lunchtime game. Really worried about Soldado ... We just are not putting away open play goals... Bar codes did well against the CHAVS. I still pinch myself that we are 4th..without putting in a real good performance. anyway CoYS......

Don't think team news will ever be more nerve wrecking than this lol

Just imagine the reaction in here if Lamela isn't selected, and then we don't get a result!!

Personally I think it could prove to be decisive, so I'm praying AVB does start him.

As for the game, I think we'll win - and win well. Yep I'm feeling positive about this. Newcastle do have some very talented players but they don't always play well as a 'team'. Hence the inconsistency. They're also not great away from home.

I'm going 3-1 - with a Soldado brace.

Hopefully we play as well as we did at WHL in the 11-12 season...

Nope, not going to happen.

You would argue with our lack of attacking and conversion success in recent weeks Lamela must start. He was full of running against Sherrif and while that opposition isnt a world beater none of his team mates looked even remotely on his wavelength as his passing and movement off the ball was so crisp. But you also want to keep Andros so its going to be an interesting challenge for AVB. In a tough game like this I think he will give Holtby the start over Eriksen with Lewis sitting in front of Capoue and Paulinho.

Newcastle showed that they are a good side against Chelsea and cant be underestimated. A tough game for both sides but I think we will nick a win in a very closely fought contest.

I hope we smash 6 past them especially after Pardews disgraceful comments at the end of last season.

Gutted that Sandro has picked up another injury. He has been so dominant since his return.

I wouldn't hardly ever say this but with the fixtures over the next few weeks in general along with us playing Toon, City & UTD I think ths is virtually a must win going in to the other 2. We don't want to be paying catch up.

I know after our disastrous game at home against the Spammers anything could happen, However I'm very confident we'll win this one and look forward to an exciting, entertaining game.

Looking forwards to going to the lane tomorrow expecting more of the same around 8000 passes all of which leads to blind alleys and no clue plus around 3 shots on target.
Oh and I expect it to finish nil nil.

Heard 2nd hand from Joe Kinear that they have had us watched 3 times and are confident of a result. Although we have better players in each position, they think we have several weaknesses that can be exploited and we don't play well as a unit.

I reckon if we can score within 20 minutes, we'll dick them 3-0. If it's 0-0 at half time, I won't be confident.

I would Imagine they must be confident everyone else can employ tactics to stop us why not them this could be another west ham.

Wow! You really have a confidence in the Spurs don't you? I know things could be better but try being positive for once.

Here's an idea.

Don't go.

Stay home and tidy your sock drawer instead. Sounds infinitely more exciting.
