Everyone clear on the whole relegation battle situation now? Bent is the best championship striker we've had since the Razor,... he just cost a little more. Lennon and O'Hara ran their asses off. Corluka has a brain, I wish many of his team mates would learn - keep it simple "control the ball or it controls you" :bang:

Dawson really did the job when he came in. Gomes couldn't be faulted today.

Any news on Pavlyuchenko yet? COYFS!!! Sod it, we're not last in the league today

A few thoughts.

Bale was at complete fault for the Portsmouth goal, should have maintain his LB position. Good on 'Arry to take him out of the firing line.

Unlucky for Pav, he would have scored where Bent didn't. Times up for Darren & Gareth.

Any team at the foot of the table should however be grateful for getting a point today, I feared we'd lose it in the dying seconds as with previous outings.

There was enough on show to suggest we'll get out of this rut, but we need to trade off Bent to improve our attacking options.

Zokora played well today although that useless slide tackle was a major contributing factor for their goal.

Thought Corluka was excellent today and long may it continue. We deserved the 3.

If the rest of the team helped close down they wouldnt have score.

But as usual its only Zokora working his ass off.

Ok, I shall be the first to interject with some positives; Corluka, Dawson and Woodgate were bloody brilliant today. Bale played well too along with modric. Lennon was a constant threat (as usual) and Bentley actually looked like he cared when he came on. I don't think it will come as too much of a surprise to say that Bent and to a slightly lesser extent, Defoe cost us the game. Great goal, but missed two sitters.

Yeh Defoe missed a sitter, Bent missed an even bigger sitter. But we had 30 shots today and on another day we would have won that game. We had some pretty suspect moments at the back, but in general i'm not as dispondant as after the Wigan game where we hadn't created anything.

It's in our own hands still and with 16 games to go I still think we have more than enough fire power to get ourselves out of this mess.

I thought today was alot better than recent efforts, it wasn't brilliant by any means but better! And with a bit better finishing (specially from Darren Bent). Only concern is I still feel Zokora and Modric is abit light weight in the middle. Says everything that David James was Skys man of the match. Stoke match is must win now. Really strongly think that should be reserves out against Utd in cup next saturday as heard that Stoke are of to Dubai this week as no game till they play us.

If Pav's out for a while & Bent being (add whatever) then we'll go out & pick another striker or two.

Bellamy & Jones would be very useful right now.

Defoe had a reason to be under pressure. His return to WHL, playing against his old club, Pompey fans on his back. He missed two good chances, but redeemed himself with the equaliser. Bent had nothing to worry about but putting the ball in the back of the net. He didn't even head it in the right direction. Head back across into the far side of the goal while the goalie's moving in the opposite direction. Come on, basic decision making skills...

lets please not forget that Bale is still very young, and is currently playing in a team really lacking confidence and composure. he needs time

Totally this. I also think Defoe still felt in his mind that he needed to prove he was good enough for Spurs. Now he's done so, he'll be looking a lot sharper, fingers crossed.

Players who benefitted from this game:

Corluka - So calm, so composed, this guy's technique is beautiful. Most solid RB we've had for some years.
Lennon - Again, like a flash of light down the right, he wanted to be involved with everthing.
Zokora - Solid and confident, both getting forward and defending. Passing was spot on tonight too.
Woodgate - Was as ever present as we expect from him. Made some great runs forward to support the midfield too, something i think we don't do enough of.
Defoe - Had to score, looked like he really wanted it, it's just a case of if it wasn't for bad supply, he wouldn' have no supply at allll...
Bale - Tried really hard, showed that he's not as spindly as looks and has got a brain in his head, but just doesn't fill me with confidence. He doesn't think like a defender but at least he believed in himself for ten minutes, at least.

Those who didn't:

Bent - How dude? Did you blink? I hate heading footballs lofted in like that, but i could've scored that. Seriously, what's going on in your head that's taken your preseason form away?
Pavlyuchenko - Poor guy. Whatever it is, i hope it's nothing as serious as it looked. Showing a lot of promise, the last thing he needs now is to be crocked for weeks.
King - Looked bright, lots of shouting and cajoling the lads then twang and he pulled an arse muscle or something by the looks. Maybe he needs some Sanatogen in his diet or something.
Bentley - Only for the fact that he showed that, along with Bale, his more than able dead ball skills have vanished and he never seems to be looking for space to receive. More often than not, calling for the ball when flanked by three players within a few paces. He needs to be more mobile off the ball.

It was such a piss take how from lennons deflected shot they instantly got a goal because our midfield is so porous.. redknapp needs to get the situation with gomes and king sorted (as it could have cost us big time today), any other team with a manager with a brain would have targetted an injured keeper who cant kick, so its just as well portsmouth dont have that..

i would hope o'hara gets the nod for left back next time, though i'm not sure it was really bales fault, unlucky run of the ball from charlies tackle and then little nick to send nugents shot in - but we really do need another striker in, looking at todays performance, and i know we'll face much better teams, but it doesnt even need to be a big man, just having front players comfy on the ball is a plus as bent isnt

Im not a big fan of Defoe, but from today i could say that hes much better at timing his runs now, and he looks to get other people involved , and passes more than he use too. But, hes still light weight but that cant be helped, but the biggest problem i see is that actually hes really not that pacey
