I think Benny was taken off so we had some extra height for set-pieces. Lennon was looking really good and I thought he looked the most likely to make something happen. But saying that VDV has scored more prem goals than any other P.L player since he joined us (may-be RVP has overtaken hm in the last few weeks). If we need goals he's a good player to have on the pitch (usually).

I love VDV, but on today I don't know why the hell he stayed on today, he was poor and ineffective.
He's played better and been taken off on 65 minutes. Was a shame to see Lennon go off to be honest. Defoe also did next to nothing which wasn't a great surprise.

I didn't say that the team was shit. It was a generic statement about form and how VdV wasn't at his best today. Nothing else.

Taking Benny off for Bassong made sense imo - we were chasing the game and they were sitting back, so having a bigger guy for set pieces was going to help us (and Bassong did win a header in their box which he should have done better with). I guess the logic behind using VDV instead of Lennon was also due to them sitting back. We needed players were able to play clever passes and 1-2s. Lennons pace and ability to beat a player wouldnt have been much use in the second half - that said i thought he played well in the first half and caused Woodgate all kinds of problem

i understood the height thing cos they mentioned that on the tele, but i thought vdv doesnt usually add much to the defence.. he spent the game so far away from ade i thought the big man was going to burst into tears.
i understand the need for vdv to get minutes to get back his fitness but he should have come off at half time or on 60 mins or something..
