Had no space to play which is why he was ineffective.......just like Defoe was.

Absolutely.

I don't know why people are so surprised here, the last game he struggled like that was away at Newcastle who, like Stoke did today, played with 2 deep lying CMs shutting off the space where VDV thrives best.

Today, credit to Harry, he played deeper and whilst he did a decent job of recycling possession he never found the killer pass from deep he is capable of. It's not his best zone to play in, but we needed him there today as another brain to unlock doors and it didn't quite come off for him. It was the right thing to do, we had no other player on the bench capable of creating from deep, people here are unrealistic to expect him to thrive against a team specifically designed to limit space in dangerous areas.

I think the early goal for Stoke put paid to VdVs game. Once they were one up they sat very deep, crowded the middle, meaning VdV had to come very deep to get the ball.

Adebayor was too isolated and we were too slow moving forward.

My only criticism of Rafa is when we play opposition who are sitting very deep with men behind the ball he is too eager to get on the ball. It reduces his goal threat, he often finds himself too deep to make the final pass for a goal, and our striker is isolated. Its something the team needs to be aware of, and requires not only Rafa to stay around the box more but also for the wingers to get into central positions and not stay out wide as much

Van der Vaart got a good assist today. Obviously it was wrongly dissallowed, but if it counted like it should have people would be saying 'Oh Rafa had a decent game today, not as involved as usual but still got an assist'.

Well this is fucking embarrassing. I was about to avoid neg repping you altogether, on account that as a rule I only neg rep that absolutely poor standard of posts (about 4 afaik), but since you really are pushing one of the dumbest opinions on football....suposedly on a team you pretend to support, I'm going to have to give you a big..fat...neg rep on this bad boy.

That green bar may still look the same, but beneath it lies the lack of respect of your peers.

Lovely stuff.

i'm not pretending anything. it's not my fault so many posters/supporters are a touch deluded. i think rafa is a great player, but today he wasnt fit/ or maybe he wasnt interested. i dont really give a ****. most players in the team are capable of that.

Amazing how he managed to see more of the ball than any other player on pitch bar Modric and at half time had covered more ground than any other spurs player (haven't seen the full time stats) then isn't it ?

What happened with the penalty? From the camera angle prior to the penalty being taken, it seemed like there was a disagreement between VDV and Luka.

I read it as VDV not wanting to take the penalty, but it could have been that he was not allowed to take it. Anyone has any idea?

Dont know about who wanted to or was told to take the penalty but it was interesting to see Lennon/Modric take control of the corners. Would have like to have seen or heard if VDV had anything to say about that.
