Manchester United, Liverpool & Tottenham alerted as Villarreal put Giuseppe Rossi on sale

The Italy international could be available for around €14.5m in the summer transfer window due to the Spanish club's financial problems, with Premier League clubs sounded out

Villarreal will sell Giuseppe Rossi in the summer and have sounded out interest from Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Goal.com understands the Italy international could be available for as little as €14.5 million (£12m) at the end of the season due to Villarreal’s dire financial situation and the player’s desire to move to a bigger club.

Rossi is currently recovering from a cruciate knee injury that has kept him out of action since October last year and Villarreal fear they will now be forced to sell him on the cheap unless he recovers in time to feature for Italy at the European Championships in the summer.

Inter have been heavily linked with a move for Rossi but third parties are also trying to broker a potential return to the Premier League for the 25-year-old former United man.

Tottenham have shown strong interest in the past having had a €42m (£35m) bid rejected in January 2011 before making renewed efforts to bring him to White Hart Lane the following summer.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is a huge fan of the American-born forward and the Londoners may look to take advantage of Villarreal’s financial situation, which could get even worse if they are relegated from La Liga this season. They sit 17th in the table, just four points clear of safety with 10 games to play.

Rossi is understood to prefer a move to Italy because of his frustrating experience in England, when he scored just once for United and failed to find the target in 11 appearances on loan at Newcastle.

United had a first refusal buy-back clause - the option to match any bid accepted by Villarreal - inserted in the €8m (£6.6m) deal that took him from Old Trafford to El Madrigal in 2007.

There are no indications that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering re-signing Rossi but United are expected to be in the market for a striker with both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen set to leave in the summer.

Liverpool’s problems in front of goal have been well documented and Rossi is a proven goalscorer, having netted 35 goals in all competitions last season.

Rossi fits the bill to solve the Reds’ goalscoring problems but much will depend on the futures of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, who have both been linked with moves away from Anfield.

Would be nice. At that price every team in Europe will have a stab at signing him.

True, he's a clever payer but if his pace is severely affected, he'd need to be extremely clever to compensate. Otherwise, he's short and slow. Get away with that in CM/AM but a bit shit for a striker.

Should get him if he's available and ship Defoe on. Rossi can link up play, is a better finisher and younger. I remember his hat trick at the lane in a friendly a couple of years ago. Was class.

If he's fully recovered from injury we should definitely be looking at him, but I think if we signed him we'd still need a target man and we'd have to think about changing the way we play. I'm not convinced Rossi is the man to lead a 4-5-1/4-3-3 type formation.

Depends if he is fully recovered from his injury. The most sensible deal would probably be to loan with an option to buy, but I doubt Villarreal would agree to that.

He's really someone Harry fancies. If Harry leaves as we expect, I wonder if the new manager will be interested. Not that he isn't a good player, but he might not fit the style of the next one. And that may seem silly with a player of his ability, but if it was O'Neil, he wouldn't want him, would he? Not unless gained 3 stone :)

would be the perfect striker to have upfront under brendan rodgers' 433 next season.

Do you think he'd fit that formation? My only concern with Rossi is that I fear we'd be shackled to a 442 formation whenever he's in the team, similar to how we are with Defoe now and were with Keane previously. Have Villarreal used Rossi in a 433 much?

in a complete footballing team like how rodgers has swansea playing then i think he could, under harry it'd never happen though. for villarreal he's played left of a front 3, then last season they moved to a narrow 442 with rossi and nilmar upfront, that's when rossi was at his most productive(in terms of goals).

I think we should fo for Hazard or Remy first. I would still be happy with Rossi but he's not my first choice.
It all depends on how he comes back from his knee injury
This is definitely a big factor. Ideally we'd need to see him play a half season first. Maybe a loan with an option to sign in January would be a good option.

I would worry about him turning into another Owen.

Would be a great signing. Unlikely though.

Its his first major injury, a loan to buy would never happen.

Absolutely it could. It's been bad enough to keep him out for a whole season. Who knows if he'll be the same player again

Same, albeit a much lesser degree, for Afellay. What coulda been if his injury affects him from here on out.

bet they regret turning down that £35mill bid now, the buggers.

I say £10mill upfront for season loan, with £6mill extra option to buy IF he has fully recovered.

I think he'll end up at Juventus. Can't see him coming back to the PL.
