What a pity the so-called "United" Kingdom can't make it a truly "Great" Britain team.

We'd be world beaters if we could play the best in one team. What a subs bench we'd have too!

Having a GB team for the Olympics is a good thing for this tiny island nation (yes, I know Ireland is across the water!) but those silly protesters can't see further than their own country's borders.

Divisive and short-sighted nationalism. Meh.

I'm with you on this it's about time we had a UK/GB team. Having 4 viotes in FIFA is a pretty lame excuse not to unite. Over the years some "Great" British players have missed out on the world stage. Time to put it right IMO.

This whole argument's moot, because in 10 to 15 years time the top players won't be playing international football

I'll repeat myself again - a very small minority of Welsh fans and not during the game. A complete non story so can we please stop turning this into some sort of nationalist uprising?
What I really find pathetic are xenophobic remarks drawing on cliches and stereotypes.

There are a lot of Spurs fans in my piddly little country of coal miners, quite a few frequent this site. It might therefore be a nice idea not to go out of your way to offend.

It's not really a non story in that it made national media and radio.

Might be good for you to learn what xenophobia is, my comments might border on the racially insulting if you're that touchy and sensitive, which it seems you are, but really it was an off-hand remark.

Stop being so fucking dull.:bang:

Oh, and "piddly little country of coalminers"...is that the best you could come up with?

Pathetic comment, absolutely comment. How about you grow up a little bit?

Yeh i really couldn't be bothered to put a lot of thought into it, although it does seem to have aggrevated you welshies quite a bit, so despite my lack of effort you guys have got very riled up.

I guess maybe this attitude from you goes to show why there were welsh fans booing their own players at the game.

You say they are different nations but then look at your passport and tell me what nationality it says you are.

You're English and British, it's part and parcel of the same thing, you can't be one without also being the other, same goes for the other countries you've listed above, they are all British as well as indepedantly of those countries.

Xenophobia - unreasonable and sometimes exaggerated fear, antipathy or contemptuous behaviour towards that which is strange or foreign.

So, yes it was.
Although you seem to prefer being classed as racially insulting. Odd choice!

Such comments don't unduly bother me but I do find it a tad annoying that running down/ridiculing the Welsh is one of the last bastions of prejudice allowed.
It would be nice if we had a level playing field for everyone.

As I said in my original post there are a lot of Welsh Spurs fans so no point aggrevating said Welshies is there old bean?

Love and cwtches,

Agreed according to passport but tommyt mentioned separate identities and that cannot be dictated by some text on a document.

I like how you've added to your definition there. Try checking a real dictionary and you will get this:

"intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries"

As i said in my original post, i do like Welsh people, and it has nothing to do with foreigners, i take the piss out of people from different regions of the same country, i take the piss out of people from the same town, shit i've even taken the piss out of people that live in the same house as me.

The reason i said it was borderline racial if you're a very sensitive person, is that if you're going to have a hissy fit then at least get your facts right. If you feel that you are sensitive enough that it offends your delicate nature then please make sure that you're being offended in the right way

Running down and ridiculing the Welsh is most definitely not one of the last bastions allowed, but you do seem to think a lot of yourself with that remark. I won't bother trawling the web looking for people making fun of people from hundreds of different ethnic backgrounds, but believe me it happens on every socially acceptable level, it's just the only ones you take offence to are the Welsh ones.

I think you're level playing field consists of the Welsh not having the piss taken out of them, but it being acceptable for others, or would you just prefer to live in a world where nobody takes the piss (and by default has no free speech)?

Agreed according to passport but tommyt mentioned separate identities and that cannot be dictated by some text on a document.

Umm, it's not just text on a document, it's the identity that is given to you at birth as recognised by the country you live in and every other country in the world.

My point was more that you don't have a document which states your nationality as English, Welsh, etc... but you do have one that states that you're British, so really people born in any of those nations should first and foremost consider themselves British, then English, then from London, then from the East End, etc.... when they look at their identities.

1) A definition is a thorough description of the meaning of a lexical unit - including possible meanings and supplemental information. Doesn't have to be attributed to any one source.

2) I don't care if you do like Welsh people and I don't care if you take the piss out of everyone you meet. A few of us sensitive souls took umbrage to what you said and the tone that was implied. Rather than leave it there or apologise and move on you've created a much bigger issue out of it with further snide remarks.

3) Would you make glib, stereotype remarks on a public forum about blacks, Asians, Muslims, Jews, Irish? Probably not, what then makes it perfectly OK for you to do so about the Welsh?

4) The passport identity comment was not arguing whether it was the legal nationality of that person. National identity is so much more than what your passport states you are.

5) This has now got sod all to do with Spurs and should've been left alone quite a while ago.
I nearly always agree with your football related posts and I'm sure you're a good bloke in real life. So, shall we shake hands (I'll wipe the sheep shit off first), make friends and stop boring everyone else now?
