Liverpool step up Sneijder pursuit as Inter star stalls on Galatasaray move - Goal.com

EXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart

Liverpool are set to ramp up their efforts to sign Inter star Wesley Sneijder as the Dutch playmaker continues to stall on a transfer to Galatasaray, Goal.com understands.
"A number of meetings are scheduled in the next 24 hours but there is serious interest from Liverpool and Wesley would like to see if they follow that through," a source close to the deal told Goal.com. "This is a big decision at this moment in his career from a football and personal perspective."

The Reds held talks with Sneijder's representatives on Monday, which have been described as "constructive", as they look to make use of the wages freed up by the departures of high-earners

Hopefully they will do all the donkey work and we will nick him in the last minute we have screwed them over a few times.

Seems the only reason this 28 year old doesn't have many suitors is because he is a bit injury prone of late. Big big shame.
I can understand DL is reticent but if a deal could be worked out with IM it could, just could be MASSIVE for us. I'd risk it, but then it's not my money.

I think its going to be the Turks or Liverpool sadly.

His stand off with Inter has back fired on him , as there are few teams willing to take him on the money he wants.. Maybe in hindsight he should have taken the wage drop at Inter to protect his career.

I think he was expecting some financial powerhouse like PSG or City to snap him up. Inter is still a good club and he's got more than enough talent to get back into their team and be the star man again.

ITK said he's a backup plan for us. I don't think this kind of player would be "backup plan" material. A backup sounds more like Holtby in early if we can't agree a deal for anyone. If we wanted Sneijder we'd have already made contact but it's clear his wage demands are way too high for Levy's liking. Who knows, maybe Inter will want rid of him completely and sell him to us for dirt cheap as a deadline day deal.

This smells of deadline day. If Sneijder's still at Inter come January 31st I'm sure Levy will give it a shot.

If he is fit he could be the difference between us getting 4th...definately worth signing him as he would give us that little bit 'extra' we are missing...a loan deal even on his wages is a no brainer if he got us CL footy.

Its the VDV situation again. wait till last minute, drop all prices and say take it or leave it!

I can see it being a signing Levy would go for, a well known player to give us more media attention, and if the price is low enough there will still be a chance of selling on for a profit at some point.

Liverpool have enquired but apparantly he wants 240k p/w.

I believe we have zero chance of landing him.

unfortunately i think Sneijder might be dead to us. It seams there are too many factors involved for a deadline day wonderbid. I still dont think if we where to be serious about him he would ask for 240k wages as i think we are probably his first choice but the issue is how many other clubs are sniffing around. If on deadline day Levy tries to lowball Massimo Moratti i think the deal will backfire in his face. Why sell for less when he could quite easily go to Gala, Liverpool or most likely a unnamed club in Germany for the price quoted by inter. I am hopping to be proved wrong on this one i just dont have much faith in deadline day deals especially with Spurs involved...

I think his wage demands towards Liverpool, if true, is probably just because he doesn't prefer to go there. I also read that Galatasaray's bid that was accepted was only around the 6 mill pound mark. I'm sure we could afford to slap a hefty sign on fee to cover his wage demands.

However, I do understand if Levy is reluctant as he is a little injury prone, hasn't played for a while and is on the wrong side of 25.

Agree with most of this - although i think recent noises from Liverpool and BR indicate they're not so willing to pay silly money on wages thesedays. They're trying to be a bit more frugal it seems, especially since they're not playing in the CL every year now so i'd still say that big money is more likely to come from Turkey/Russia, somewhere like that.

On your last point, i'd actually say that Rafa was in exactly the same position in terms of football and match fitness when we took him and he turned into a big success for us.

This deal is all about the money really, for both Inter and WS. As a few have said, i can only see us jumping in last minute if it was to happen. IMO - if he gets match fit/on form i think he'd be fantastic for us.

We've got to consider getting him just to stop Liverpool getting him. It would bring them alot closer to us
