I disagree I don’t think the defenders were passing particularly badly but they were doing this for 80% of the game. If our game plan is to ‘let’ our defenders find the killer ball then it’s a rubbish system. We constantly went backwards when we had the ball in their half because we have no idea. Boring football and not winning football.
But that's where the majority of play starts with and your defenders need to see the early pass sometimes.

Honestly, most coaching nowadays works with build up play and relies on defenders to be able to play.

You can't just say "get the ball to the midfielders and let them dictate". No, because thats easy for the opposition to stifle.

Football today is about 3rd man, overloads and spaces. You need your defenders to contribute somehow otherwise it's easy for the opposition to combat it.

Romero can come forward with the ball, this draws out the opposition and creates spaces elsewhere.

But it's not like we have to play this way always, there's games where we sit deeper and can play over the press.

Today wasn't one of those days and was a game for the defenders to contribute

They couldn't have hand picked a better set of starting fixtures if they tried, I would expect them to win them all on paper. We on the other hand have had 2 away derbies at 2 of our bitterest rivals, where its a cup final for them.

Ah - it’s a FA / fixture list / media bias towards arsenal.

sorry but no. You play what’s in front of you and win lose or draw accordingly. They have to play same games as us. Annoying that they aren’t losing I’ll grant you but it isn’t false and Jesus is looking a great buy.

We are just so easy to play against with our box-to-nothing midfield. They we passing back and sideways when no one was even on them. Demoralizing match to watch regardless of the outcome. I get that this system doesn’t utilize a 10 and that both midfielders have defensive responsibilities. But, there have to be some 8’s out there that can turn and make a progressive pass. West Ham knew all they needed to do is mark the forwards and Perisic and nick a goal. I can live with a hard fought draw in a derby but this was just depressing.

So easy to play against we've gone 5 unbeaten, 2 games being away against European opposition....

So - regardless of your obvious dig that "they play the same games as us" are you honestly telling me they haven't had a significantly easier run of fixtures???

An easier run at the start helps a side build momentum and they were very fortunate against Palace for example.

I'm not saying we were great 2nd half tonight - we were poor in many aspects, but the 1st half wasn't bad at all and Peresic and Kulu still played very well. We had 3 players out injured, an unfit Skipp and lost Bissouma's bite because of his stupid red card. And had an appallingly bad ref, but still got a point. I'm far from panicking, we will vastly improve.

It’s not a dig. It’s an actual fact. They play the same opponents as us. In a different order.

I see your point but your being myopic

Decent result tonight, which we should be pleased with even if we can't be overjoyed.

The performance was disappointing, but ultimately it doesn't matter. Onto the next match.

I think the Palace win was a good result for them and they actually wasnt very good but fair play.

Their other 4 games have come agaisnt arguably the worst 4 teams in the league right now. If they were battering them for 3s and 4s then I'd be concerned but they are scraping by and getting over the line.

Leicester - calamitous keeping and defending cost Leicester. A team in disarray
Bournemouth - finishing 20th
Fulham - late keeping blunder against a promoted club
Villa - another late goal against a club in disarray.

I know you can only beat whos in front of you but I'm not concerned about them at this moment in time.

Do you not think that the movement in front of them is poor? I agree their passing isnt the best but im a big believer that the movement makes the pass, if players arent moving into space etc and are stationary then how do we expect them to pass to those players with men on them?

The passing options were there but they only appear for so long at this level and if you hesitate or refuse to play it early or take a safe touch and go backwards you lose the option.

This seems to be the common theme of some of our poorer performances this season in that when the passing around the back is laboured and slow it allows the opposition to pen us in and apply pressure.

I thought we passed it around the back well first half today and in second half against forest but the confidence is fragile and it doesn’t seem to take much for our defence and Hugo to revert to the safety first approach once we come under a bit of pressure

You have to enjoy it a bit too? What game have you enjoyed the football this season? Or this year?
Come on mate. We have dished out a fair few batterings this calendar year. Hit Newcastle and Everton for 5, smashed 4 past Leeds and Villa. Beat City and Arsenal. I don't believe that you didn't enjoy any of those matches.

We are having a bit of a slow start to the season but we are grinding out results thus far. We are only 5 games in for crying out loud. We will find our groove again, believe.
