I'd say Yaya Toure, Suarez, Drogba or Ageuro.

I love Bergkamp and a few others mentioned, but as said before, we were so crap in the 90s & early 00s that I don't think a single player would've elevated us. But recently, say the last 5 years, any of these would've made a huge difference
Although - on the other hand the gap ti bridge to being a successful side in the 90s was arguably smaller too

Even though we are or have been much better recently the task of becoming competitive is no less difficult with the big spending of city Chelsea and Utd etc

I think people under estimate how much of an impact a truly great player could have had in the 90s somewhat - Jurgen transformed us in a short time and had he stayed I think we'd have continued to progress, in fact I believe the fall out after his departure with sugar refusing to sign a Carlos kick a ball was what kept us down for so long and missed out of opportunities that the likes of Chelsea (zola, gullit, vialli etc) and Wenger at Arsenal capatilised on while we stayed so stagnent through the 90s and early 2000s

The one foreign player who would have made us contenders in any part of the Epl, including now, is Vieira.

Utterly dominant and made an impact in every area of the pitch.

Since I've been a member on this site we've cried out for such a player and only once come close with Carrick.

We've had great strikers and defenders but always been also rans without a dominant midfielder.

Bentaleb and Vieira would turn us into winners.

Vieira is an excellent about

I can't believe I (or anyone else) haven't even considered him

One of the best epl players ever

I'd have loved Suarez at the club - I think had he came the same time he went to Livepool we could have challenged

Also watching him play for Barca, I think he's fantastic and going to get better and better. One of my favourite players to watch play the game and whoever actually came to the conclusion that he was too similar to VdV and not what we needed is a mug and that decision was as big of a missed opportunity as we'll likely see again

Bobby Convey....

..Seriously I would have to go for Dennis Bergkamp. A good DM and CB would probably have helped us more but....Bergkamp was so good and had all that lovely 'spursey' flair. Similarly I would have loved Le Tiss in his pomp.

Ginger Pele not iconic enough for the OP?

I'm not fussed actually. We've had Sheringham, Klinsmann, Bale, Berbatov, VDV, Ginola, plus a few I've probably forgotten.

Cantona for me, hated him at Man Ure, but when I look back he was just superb, a true maverick 'Spurs' type player, was gutted when Yanited got him, God I do dislike those norvern monkeys immensely!!!

Also Le Tissier, another 'Spurs' type player.

For me its Bergkamp, fantastic player. Loved him as a player even if he played for that mob. His goal against Newcastle still sticks in my memory. What he lacked in pace he made up with on speed of though, like teddy

Suarez when we could of got him. Imagine him, Bale, Modric and VDV.

We would of been challenging for the PL. The guy is a total dick on the pitch but he did have that winning mentality and seemed fine off the pitch.

What a team that would have been. Would have been heart breaking watching them all leave though.

Suarez.

His desire to win and fight/chase down every ball is exactly what we needed - a serious attitude change in the playing personnel, and of course he combines this with some real genius and absolute quality. Doesn't stop making clever runs. Just infectious. And above all he exemplified this consistently.

Oh Harry.

Another name I'm suprised no one has mentioned yet is Ruud van Nistlerooy... What a player. At his peak I used to rate him higher than Henry. I remember those games he played against Real he was a beast.
