I don't think Defoe has ever been clinical, his chance against Blackpool sums his technique up. With all the goal to aim for he blasts is as hard as possible at the 'keeper.
I remember him talking about his technique in a TV interview for a coaching programme, his aim is to hit shots early before the 'keeper can set himself. He's not a placer of shots and not a great finisher. He does score great goals, but as has been said, he's not a great goal scorer.
Not sure what the stats suggest around it, but I think he has one of the lower conversion rates of the strikers at the club. It's strange that the Keane one-on-one myth still perpetuates. I know who'd I'd most want to be taking a match-deciding penalty, and it wouldn't be Defoe.
