Why do people chant for JD

I don't think Defoe has ever been clinical, his chance against Blackpool sums his technique up. With all the goal to aim for he blasts is as hard as possible at the 'keeper.

I remember him talking about his technique in a TV interview for a coaching programme, his aim is to hit shots early before the 'keeper can set himself. He's not a placer of shots and not a great finisher. He does score great goals, but as has been said, he's not a great goal scorer.

Not sure what the stats suggest around it, but I think he has one of the lower conversion rates of the strikers at the club. It's strange that the Keane one-on-one myth still perpetuates. I know who'd I'd most want to be taking a match-deciding penalty, and it wouldn't be Defoe.

JD has a great name to chant to and he clearly enjoys playing for us, I do wish though that people would stop bitching about our forwards, and if they like one particular player they must slag another, they are a great quartet, they all give us something different and they can all score goals, they are collectively a top four goal scoring machine, the problem is the areas behind them ain't, ie midfield, defence.

Oh and JD imo isn't our most clinical striker, but our most natural striker and the best of the quartet at running at players with the ball.

No different to Keano or Berba when they go to warm up, after being benched. What's baffling is why it bothers you so?

Totaly, i dont see the problem with it. It gets him (or anyone else who is warming up and gets a good reaction from the crowd) hungry for the match.
Yes i am not disputing he is a great player but he wont commit himself to us so why the loyality???

He is being loyal to the club, never spoken out to the press about us when he was left out the team. Always saying the right things to the press when he is asked questions.

Im guessing he doesn't want to sign untill he knows what is going on with the club and where he fits in with it all.

I have no problem with this as it shows he doesn't realy want to sit on a bench and pick up his pay check and is looking to get some first team football.

So does that not answer my question ?? why is he not making the team???

Because we have 4 very good strikers, and as of late Keane is/was (Berbatov as well after todays game) the only striker that was prity much nailed on to start. And as Defoe and Keane have been prity crap up front for us you cant realy play Defoe.

Because all the mean managers we have had at our club can't see that defoe is a world class striker and only needs a run of games to show it. :-|

if i saw this first it could have saved me posting everything else

We have a surplus of strikers. Liverpool have a similar situation. It is clear that all can't start, so the fans seem to be supporting him while he is on the outer. What we all know is that football can change very quickly. Keane is on fire and this may partly be because of the competition featuring players currently on the bench. I do see a time when Defoe (and probably Bent) will get a decent run inthe first team through injury or just a drop in form of the present incumbents. Just because we can't start with more than eleven doesn't mean we can't give support to the substitutes. Defoe has been amazingly patient with Tottenham. That is to his credit. You win nothing with the basic eleven players and it is the task of Ramos to keep the squad happy and motivated. Good luck to him. BTW why is acceptable for Berbatov to get an improved pay packet with no time extention without a murmur of disent while Defoe is bad for not signing and he hasn't even got a pay rise?

I have just got home from the game and i am a season ticket holder, whenever JD warms up loads of people chant "jermain defoe hes a yiddo???"

I find this hard to swallow as he wont even put pen to paper and sign a new contract so i feel a little "f**k you p**cks" is what he is thinking? so why are people all for him and not players on the pitch?? if i was a striker for tottenham and the fans sung for JD and he was not on the field i would be pretty pissed off!!

Just wondered if someone could tell me why he is held in such high esteem as he is never picked to start recently and that is under two managers.

I don't know either. He is clearly our most ineffective striker as well. Misses too many chances.

The most ironic thing is that he actually supports Arsenal.

And that's not me shit-mongering, that's the truth.

Jermain Defoe, Not As Good As Keano.

I like JD, but wouldnt be haert broken if he left. He has served us well, but he is a lone striker and does not contribute as much as others. He has always been selfish, but in the past it has made more of an impact (for the good). Thesedays he has less exposure and we are seeing the selfishness as a bad thing becuase he has less time to score.

The fact that he's an Arsenal fan is neither here nor there. How many club supporters actually get to play for their own team?

Justremember that goal against Arsenal in the 5-4 thriller. That was class.

It's a shame because he's our best, most talented, natural striker. Shame our exalted fans don't realise his worth. When's he gone and we've got Barney as 4th choice, you'll all be dreaming of lil Jermain.

It'd be pretty strange if he did put pen to paper without hesitation, given his lack of first team chances.

And let's not forget he's never moaned to the press about it and seems to respect the club and the management. Has carried himself well and shown character in a situation that would send the Anelkas of this world into a screaming tantrum.

If he did leave in January I won't be screaming about a lack of loyalty - I'll be thinking it's fair enough really. Be a shame to see him go, though.

yep how I see it too, as much as I want him to sign a new contract I can see why he hasn't, but the fact he hasn't moaned means if he does go, it will not be on bad terms, getting a fee for him will help that too

I thought the rumours were that he was looking to run down his contract and leave on a free? If that is his intention, we should sell him for a fee while we still can. I like JD, and I think he's a great 4th choice striker, I'm just not sure he offers enough for the team to come higher than that. For the sake of his career he probably needs to be a regular first pick, which sadly I can't see happening at Spurs.

Why shouldn't we chant his name? Personally, I join in with the chants because I want him to feel that he's welcome here, that he's as much a part of the club as Berbatov or Keane.

I've been saying it for a while, anyone who thinks that Defoe is no good is fooling themselves. The best example of that is the way that Charlton and West Ham fans treat him when he plays against them. Would they boo him quite so vociferously if he had been crap for them? No. We woudn't boo Mido when he plays for Boro would we? Why not? Because we didn't feel as we'd lost something when he left, but the reverse is true about Defoe when he left Charlton and West Ham.

It's logical: Keane has scored 25 or 26 goals in his last 33 matches. Now, which is more important - making sure that Spurs have firepower up front by playing Keane, or keeping one player happy by starting Defoe? And we've all seen that Keane and Defoe don't work well together, so Keane's partner has to be Berbatov or Bent, so Defoe gets the bench. I agree with Bomber in that Defoe, when on his game, has a lethal touch. But he needs to be playing regularly to get that touch and at Spurs he's not in a position to get that.

If he leaves in January and goes to another club that gives him regular first-team football and utilises him properly, he'll score goal after goal after goal. And then Lobster Impersonator of the Year 2005, Steve McLaren, will beg to put him in the England squad. As far as I'm concerned, if he doesn't sign a contract in order to make the club sell him, then fair play to him. He's served this club well, and in a far more professional manner than some others, and now he wants to do what's best for himself. If he left my feeling would be 'thanks for all your hard work Jermain. Best of luck'.

It's not that he's no good, it's that he's not as good as our other three strikers in my opinion. He's awesome to have as fourth choice, probably too good and therefore will probably eventually want to leave, which is fair enough, but (again, in my opinion) he's not getting in ahead of Berbatov, Keane or Bent, who all offer a lot more than he does. How he's in the England squad again and Bent isn't, I really don't know.

No, it's because he shafted Charlton up the bum, and then handed in a transfer request at West Ham within 24 hours of them being relegated.

That's why they boo him.

He's a favourite with the fans, that's why they chant his name. He's often come out & said one of the reasons he loves Spurs so much is the backing he gets from the fans. We have 4 good strikers & none of them deserve to be 4th choice but someone is always going to be, it'll be such a shame if he goes in January but you couldn't really blame him. I hope he remains a Yiddo though.
