Why do Sky hate us - my theory

The Mother-in-Law decided to tell me the other day that she heard on the radio that Spurs were working through the night on the new stadium much to the annoyance of the local residence. I gave her a few seconds to add to that and got nothing. At which point I asked whether the local residents on the radio had anything to say on the regeneration of the area including the new shopping, education and leisure facilities? Strangely this hadn't come up. Just the noise there would be at night. Having read Mace’s plans for dealing with local residence issues, including demolition from inside the stadium and covering of work to keep the area clean I pointed out that maybe, just maybe, the night work wouldn't be all drilling and bulldozing that could be done during the daylight hours and may well be work such as painting amongst other things (I can't sleep with the sound of those brush bristles!). The truth of the matter is, the media plays on the 5% that will get people riled up because 95% of the possible conversation is educational but deemed pretty dull. Like watching paint dry come to think of it.

Look, we are a small club. By all means, we are great, but by being the largest of the rest, we are also small. Global fan base, revenue and expenditure, and results over the last decades, has firmly put us ahead of 14 clubs and behind 5 clubs in the league. It's not a very prestigious place to be in. Clearly this is changing and we have reduced the gap, at least in sporting terms, to the rich clubs. But, objectively speaking, we are just not AS interesting to big, commercial media outlets as the five really big clubs are. Continue the regular involvment in top 4, title races, and add to that regular cup finals and great European results, it will all change. But objectively speaking, I don't feel that Spurs is hated. We have just a long, modern tradition for being in the opposite of a media sweet spot.

I don't think they hate us. They just don't rate us highly. Even now that we're successful they still look for any opportunity to question us. We'll need to win titles to shut them up. They'll probably still question whether our top players should leave though. I think they're so used to our failures in the past that they're still expecting us to slip up.
In other words, they're not smart enough to cope if things change from the way they've [mostly] been for the last God knows how many years, even if the change is slight, because change threatens their cosy little club.

They don't hate and there is no grand conspiracy. In the grand scheme of it all, we really are not that important.

Yeah, I keep reading disingenuous comments like this from a small minority of people who refuse to acknowledge the issues just to be contrarian or to wind people up, it's become pretty obvious for many people this is a problem, even supporters of other clubs have noticed it.

I have no idea why people have a hard time admitting it, is it because they don't want their own delusions of fairness in sports media to be shattered?

Fact is we are a 'complication'. Top 4 used to be a comfortable club of Woolwich, Man Utd, Chelsea and Pool, and they could base their coverage around that.
Along came another petro club in City to complicate things and then we suddenly started breaking our glass ceiling. Before we used to get sneered at for wanting to reach that top table and invariably failing. Now it looks like there could be some longevity in this upsurge (hence the hostility from the other top 6 clubs, who finally see us as a threat).

Sky are hedging their bets as to whether it will last, so the usual stuff about Poch leaving, Kane & Alli need to leave to reach their full potential etc. I get it from Woolwich fans all the time, and there is more than a hint of wishful thinking in it. Sky just go with the flow.

We not important in the scheme of things for television network to hold agendas or to try distablise the football club by fictcious narratives.

They are simply saying what the rest of the media and others club supporters are saying and maybe there might actually be something in what they are saying.
In terms of viewing figures only. In terms of football, entertainment, an actual positive and different narrative from the norm, we are among one of the most important things to happen to English football in the last few years and we show no signs of going away.

I'm not sure why so many of our fans seem bothered about it. We have threads on:

What opponents are saying about us: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/ind...onents-fans-are-saying-about-us-16-17.125680/

What pundits are saying about us: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/index.php?threads/what-the-pundits-are-saying-about-us.125676/

What managers are saying about us: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/ind...yers-and-managers-are-saying-about-us.128231/

Why are we hated: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/index.php?threads/why-are-we-so-hated.128498/

Now this on why do sky hate us. Why do people care so much about what others think? It's starting to get like RAWK on here. Like "Look at us, we're doing well lately. We demand some recognition".

So in every fibre of your being you view Sky as having no agenda whatsoever in how they approach/have approached THFC over the last couple of seasons? ...

It's a yes or a no.

I know which I favour.

Sky have a right to answer the questions they do. We are at the table on merit but in doing so it raises doubts about sustainability.

For every negative question/comment, there is always a mention about pochetinos great work, the youth of the squad, the amazing new stadium, the english core...

unfortunately we hear what we want to suit our agenda

BT Sport on the other hand is a very strange set up. They appear to be so Pro-Liverpool its uncomfortable. Liverpools game this weekend (although on Sky) will ensure that they have been live more than any other team this season. How that can be justified is beyond me

Agree with your first three paragraphs. I am pretty sure when we were in Europa we were the most shown side as many of our games were on a Sunday.

No they haven't, they just want to make money. That is all they want to do.
That settles that then. They don't believe in the product, just the bottom line. It's an interesting view ...

Sky only care about viewing figures, they don't care about of those other aspects, why would they? If Hull were playing the best football in the league they wouldn't suddenly take preference over us with Sky, the same applies with those clubs above us. There really isn't the need for such sensitivity, the whole discussion with regards to our players may not be what our supporters want to hear but it is absolutely a relevant dicussion point.

Anyway, my point is, the longer SKY persist with this model of "old boys" and no equal representation for Spurs the more idiotic they are going to look and ultimately it will end up hurting subscriptions to the service I think.

I wish they would give us the option of turning off commentary completely, would rather watch matches without it anyway.
I'm not so sure they'll lose that many subscribers. As long as they have fans of the Sky-anointed 'elite' clubs willing to cough up, I don't see Sky changing too much, because they don't feel the need to change.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. You can't argue with some of those points, to be fair, particularly the fact that we haven't won much recently. I didn't understand Souness' comment, but he is a self-confessed Spurs fan so I doubt there was any maliciousness intended. I don't agree with him, but if that's what he believes then so be it.

Sums up the modern football fan then. Happy to be holier than thou but accept being undermind by imbalanced views on all media fronts.
