That's simply not true.

Jan played 33 PL games for us that season and Toby played 30 PL games. We never played with 3 CBs in that season so how did Dier manage 30 games at CB?

Granted he made 36 PL appearances but that was a mix of DM, RB and CB with some starts and some cameos.
We played 3 at the back most of the season to be fair, did you not watch us?

Can see a CB and finally a midfield controller coming in January. Be surprised if its much more. Perhaps more attacking talent in the summer.

We HAVE to get a striker in Jan. That should be our main prioirity, along with a CM.

Would love to find an Eriksen replacement, someone who can offer double-digit assists per season.
someone who plays with their head up, able to collect a ball from deep and pick a pass or find space behind the striker and play killer through balls.
The top teams all have this kind of player
Bruno & Pogba @ Man Utd,
Jorginho & Mount @ Chelsea,
Trent, Henderson, Firminho @ Liverpool
The whole midfield @ Man City :)

We played 3cb almost all of that season.

We basically went with either:

Lloris
Dier Alderweireid Vertonghen
Walker Wanyama Dembele Rose
Eriksen Dele
Kane

Or

Lloris
Dier Alderweireid Vertonghen
Walker Wanyama Eriksen Rose
Dele Son
Kane
Gone through this in more detail on Transfermarkt and have the following PL games where we played 3 at the back:

West Brom (A)
Chelsea (H)
West Brom (H)
Stoke (H)
Everton (H)
Southampton (H)
Burnley (A)
Crystal Palace (A)
Leicester (A)

So that's 9 games out of 38, so less than a quarter of games playing a back 3.

Wasn't that the year Toby did his hamstring against madrid which put him out of action for three months?

No, he was out for a few games, but the following season was when he was out for a few months.

We played 3 at the back most of the season to be fair, did you not watch us?

As above, we didn't - we played 3 at the back for less than a quarter of the season. Did you not watch us? ;)

I read that is its only obligation if he reaches a certain number of games. Ether way, if we are really interested (which i doubt), you would think Fabio would know the details as he was the one who brought him to Juve in the first place.

Edit:

this is the official statement by Juve. Seems that yes, obligation if he plays X amount of games, and if he doesn't Juve still have a first option.

Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that an agreement with ACF Fiorentina for the temporary acquisition, until 30 June 2022, of the registration rights of the player Federico Chiesa has been finalized for a consideration of € 10 million, of which € 3 million for sporting season 2020/2021 and € 7 million for sporting season 2021/2022.

The agreement further entails:

The obligation for Juventus to definitely acquire the player’s registrations rights, subject to the achievement of certain given sporting objectives by the end of the season 2021/2022;

The right for Juventus to definitively acquire the player’s registration rights in case these given objectives are not achieved.

In both cases, the agreed consideration for the definitive acquisition is € 40 million, payable in three years, which might be increased up to a maximum of € 10 million upon achievement of further performance objectives over the duration of the employment contract with the player.
Yup exactly. So if he wants to come and we want him there is still an opportunity there. Juventus are not in a good financial situation and I read a few times he isn’t happy there under the manager.,

Well then transfermrkt is wrong.

Or, more fairly I guess, they’re looking at Dier’s mixed in match role where he was often a hybrid DM/CB and erring towards DM more often than I/ others are.

Fair enough, I honestly don't remember that many back 3 games in that season, but my memory could well be wrong.

Before speculating about spending £500m on the cream of Serie A. We have before us a six week preseason leading up to Liverpool in mid-December. Games are challenging, but far from the toughest we will face this season. We can add some fitness, mix up the game day teams and develop some basic tactics.

After that we can draw up our needs for the January window.

My only necessity is a back-up to Kane and I am leaning towards a need for something creative in the midfield.

Or, you and I just watched Dier and saw different things. Or I could be exaggerating without realising.

Transfermrkt fwiw has him starting 23 of his 34 starts at CB, while Vertonghen played 33 league matches and Alderweireid 30. So it could be that he started 11 of his CB matches in place of one of them and the other 12 with them both, which is only a touch more than you suggest.

Either way, best defence that season with a decent chunk involving Dier in a back 3 so he must’ve been alright ?

Midfield is our weakest area by a long distance. Can see a second striker being more needed now though to play alongside Kane or Son.

Sky did a big analysis of it after the Watford game that season (Boxing Day?), highlighting how fluid the formation was and how dier was key.
He regularly dropped in to make a back three to allow the full backs to move up the pitch simultaneously.
Not sure how the data would reflect that tbh.

I'm sad and checked the games one by one comparing who played - it was 9 games with a back 3 of Jan, Toby and Dier according to transfermarkt.

Also i'm not a Dier basher, I've been largely supportive of him at Spurs (been a few times that has been tested), but recently he hasn't looked like a top 4 CB. Maybe he needs the right coach, maybe top 4 was easier to crack into 5 years ago... it's a tough one to call.

I would love him to prove me wrong though.

I'm guessing even Ramon Vega would look good with Jan and Toby on either side of him.

PS Not that I think Dier is that bad.

Conte will have been watching and analysing a lot of our games in anticipation. I'm sure of it.

When you like tactical aspects you really can't sit on your arse for hours let alone days.

He will have been analysing something.

So I expect he'll know a lot more about our players than people think, and what he will do with them.

The point about dier etc for me is our team has been atrociously coached for two years.

And for me they all get a clean slate , yes even the forums pantomime villan Winks.

But but but they're also all out of excuses. This isnt a failing manager past his best , a club legend burnt out or a glorified caretaker who looks terrified

We now have an elite manager who knows his shit and doesn't take any. I wouldn't be surprised if he love Dier, equally I wouldn't be shocked if he sells him.

What I don't think is that we have suddenly billions to spend. A lot of these players ha to be turned around and I think he will do just that.
