Let’s talk about the most important thing of the night - Ian Darke’s frankly bizarre commentary. He’s suddenly started putting absurd accents onto names - Lucas Moura and when he mentioned Bruno Fernandes were first half highlights, which I put down to pretentiousness but then he refereed to Ben Davies as Daveesh. Then he spent the whole second half talking as it spurs were getting humped. Very odd.

It was Paul Dempsey, never liked him as a commentator, truly one of the worst.

haha, Ian Darke took the licks. I usually couldn't care less about commentators but I must admit he was embarrassing with his attempts to sprinkle the players names with a touch of the exotic.

It was Paul Dempsey, not Ian Darke, but the point stands.

In theory, pronouncing it 'Fernandesh' is correct. However, in Brazilian Portuguese, they don't pronounce the 's' at the end of words as 'sh', they pronounce it as 'ss' - it's one of the main difference between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. So 'Fernandesh' may be correct, but 'Lucash' isn't. The fact that he didn't know the difference demonstrates the importance of a commentator actually doing some proper research instead of just trying to sound clever.

Likewise, the Davies / Davis axis. It's commonly held that whatever the spelling, the name should be pronounced, 'Davis', but you do get people, even some called Davies, who pronounce it the (technically) incorrect way. Unfortunately, that's not a defence when it comes to Dempsey because Ben pronounces his own surname 'Davis', so he (Dempsey) is incorrect regardless of whether 'Daveez' is acceptable or not.

It pissed me off too.

It gets even funnier when you translate foreign players' names into English. Most of the time they lose their exotic nature, becoming very boring, hilarious or quite frankly, bizarre:

I feel a bit sorry for Moussa. His weaknesses left him looking a bit silly in the second half but at least he was visible and trying. I am in no doubt he will be upgraded this Summer and he needs to be but I have a lot of respect who gives nothing less than 100%.

For all his shortcomings Moussa is one of my favourite players. If only he could be more creative he would be a true beast.

During the Spurs games last night, did anyone else notice the BT Sport commentator's insistence on referring to Bruno Fernandes as 'Fernandesh' when mentioning the Man U score? I wouldn't mind so much if he was one of those commentators who took his craft seriously and liked to research the correct pronunciations etc, but with Jenas co-commentating right next to him pronouncing Hoy-be-air correctly, the very same commentator kept calling him Hoy-berg all night! Self-righteous, pompous prick!

Why are people concerned about "Fernandesh"? That's the correct pronunciation. It's not stuck-up. It's accurate. Similarly "Hoy-byer".

I try to pronounce people's names how they like them to be pronounced, indeed I often ask them to say it carefully and I memorise it. It's polite and respectful. People appreciate it.

I have an unusual surname. I appreciate it when people ask me how to pronounce it and I get notably annoyed when people persist in calling me "Maxwell" or "Mazdoff" or any of ten other varieties. It's a form of passive-aggressive disrespect.

I suspect most of the people who take the piss out of commentators who try to pronounce names correctly, even if they sometimes fail, are called "Smith" or "Brown". More respect and less arrogance required.

I think you’ve misunderstood my post David.

I don’t have a problem with him pronouncing Fernandes as Fernandesh, so long as he makes the effort to learn all pronunciations correctly- which he hasn’t bothered for Hojbjerg. He was calling him Hodge-berg even though Jenas was sat next to him pronouncing it correctly.

if you’re going to start down that road as a commentator (righty in my opinion) then do your homework on all player name pronunciations - is my point. Otherwise you’re just being pompous

I'd pronounce yours as it's spelt, with each letter pronounced, is that correct?

Mine's a fairly simple one that so many get wrong, but I'm damned if I'm gonna tell anyone what it is! I got pelters all through my School years for it, so I'd expect it on here too with the amount of gobshites we have in this forum.
